Saints interested in Charlie Austin, apparently.

One of the few things in QPR that actually works, and scored a great goal against us in the 2-1 victory, even though it was eclipsed by Pelle's winner.

Think he would be a good fit for us.

Total brain lapse upon opening this thread, and thought you were referring to Charlie Adam. That would be bad.

Would much prefer Austin, has looked good this season in a pretty poor QPR team. Think they'll go down, so cannot see him staying there. Shown he is definitely good enough for the Premier League.

Good signing for the right price, which shouldn't be a problem as QPR will be on a major cost-cutting exercise in the summer. Maybe look at Caulker and McCarthy too?

Maybe a slight question mark over Austin's attitude but he'd certainly be a very valuable addition to our squad.

Really not sold on Caulker if I'm honest. Wasn't great last season and hasn't been great this season either.

He's not been impressive at QPR at all, but then again he is being partnered by either Richard Dunne or Rio Ferdinand...could be a similar situation to Lovren where he'll play better with the right partner.

Still, would consider him though.

Possibly. Ultimately though, if it is a case of Toby out and Caulker in I'd be a tad disappointed. Think we are likely to be weaker in CB squad wise, as I doubt Toby will stay and we aren't going to get better, but think that gap can be smaller than if Caulker came in. If that makes sense?

Basically, I think we can do better.

this would be a good get. I don't think he would get much interest from the top 6, with Tottenham being maybe the lone exception, as those other clubs are going to look to acquire "marquee players".

If he wants to play, but also move up in the PL club pecking order, I would think Southampton would be a good fit for him.

I'd have him in my squad anytime. He's a 110% player who could easily fir into our setup.

It's been rumoured that some players have been "giving a million per cent out there", so I don't see why we would should be satisfied with a paltry 110%.

Not if his 'attitude' disrupts the squad he won't be.

Not sure about this, he's a player I would have liked us to sign in L1, and although he's cetainly shown he can cut it in the PL playing for a poor side and still scoring goals, his '110%' often appears that he's playing for himself rather than a team player.

But can't argue with his goalscoring record and that would be a good addition.

Makes sense, obviously the ideal situation is if Toby signs for us but i'm not 100% confident in that happening. Would be a decent signing but yeah, we can definitely do better.

Perhaps the poor side and playing for himself are connected? What was he like before QPR?

he is probably appearing to play for himself as he is the only goal threat they have att he club.

If he does not score, they do not get points. The pressure must be incredible...and he is doing really well in a dreadful side

Looked like he was really playing for himself when he cleared one off the line against Spurs.

Is he better than a fit Jay Rod? No

Will Jay Rod get fully fit? Probably

Will Jay Rod leave this summer? Probably if you believe the press.

Would Austin be a decent signing? Yes for anywhere around or under £12m.

I doubt QPR will get anywhere near 12 million for him, with his contract situation and their likely relegation.

Agree.... 'arry saw him as an answer to the QPR goal-drought and it worked, but I don't think there were too many other takers.

....with QPR in the Championship.....they'll be lucky to half of that.

They will easily get more than £6m for one of the top PL scorers, who is English and still relatively young.

I am not sure about Les Ferdinand as DoF but if our own Les rang up with a £6m offer for Charlie Austin I am fairly sure the first thing Ferdinand would do is remind him we signed a striker for £12m who scores as many goals in a season as Austin does in a good month.

that is exactly how it will work

Is his "attitude" a real issue? Every time i see him play he puts in a real shift, whatever level he's been at and he has shown that he has the quality as well.

He was superb against United a few weeks back, despite a pretty lonely existence up front on his own (which also made me think he could fit our set-up as the lone front man, something i had previously wondered about).

Whenever you see him interviewed i also think he comes across quite well - quite grounded given where he's come from and generally pretty happy to have got where he has.

I think he'd be a good signing for us and as i say, think his attitude might be a bit of a myth

McCormack cost £11m to move from one Championship club to another, I don't think he's even played in the Prem.

Talk of Jordan Rhodes costing £12m to move from Champ club to Champ club, on the proviso of promotion. Again, no Premier League experience.

To say Austin, one of the top scorers in the league at a team like QPR whilst also with the English player premium, would be lucky to go for £6m seems a little silly.

Ye, I know comparing fees like for like is utterly daft and I do hate it. But I felt it needed highlighting at this point.

Long, in hindsight, was a terrible signing.

On a 4 year deal with decent wages and its hard to see a time he will be a first choice for us.

If someone came in with £7m or more I would let him go this summer and let Koeman get someone in that he rates.

You are joking? We paid £7m for Jay, who had never played anywhere near the Premier League, let alone scored in it and looked competent in it!

We are talking double £m figures for Austin.
