I'm sure we have money left over from last summer's "fire sale", we banked about £80 million from last season's 7th place finish & Atletico have also just given us £1.8 million to buy back our purchase clause on Toby. And that's the money I'm aware of! Surely we can find enough to meet whatever fee Atletico now want for him and put this one to bed? If the report in the Echo is true, it sounds like Toby is keen enough to stay. As someone said earlier, if they're that desperate for Filipe Luis, they could always reinvest the money from selling Toby to us.

I'm sure we are making substantial offers for him but Atletico will want to drag it out for as long as possible in the hope that a mega-club willing to offer loadsa money ends up in a bidding war with us.

If reported news is correct, he has been offered to Chelsea in exchange for the LB Filipe Luiz and it is Chelsea who are taken their time deciding whether to make the swap. Maybe we could make contact with Chelsea and offer to buy him off them over the summer. We will have up to £3M from Atletico to start the fund. Maybe Chelsea will decide to loan him to us anyway. Most of their players get loaned out these days. :)

Why 3 million ?

Why 3 million ?

Correct me if wrong, but it's 1.5million to us if Athletico take him back, and then a further 1.5miliion if Athletico sell him to another club, so in total 3 million to us.

If you say so, I'd not seen that before, just that there was a 1.5 million clause to buy out our permanent deal option.

None of us know exactly what was agreed, but most of us assumed a £1.5M (or €1.5M, we don't know) was the compensation but this additional payment (as noted above) has been mooted.

If Chelsea can't guarantee him a regular starting place, maybe they won't go ahead with the swap, or maybe they will do the swap, then sell him on. Until then, I'm still hopeful that somehow he will come back to us.

BBC gossip page has the Sunday Times starting trust Spurs are now favourites to sign Toby, though as they have a paywall, no idea what their reasoning is.

Based on the way our deal with Atletico is meant to be set up, I'd be surprised if Spurs can outbid us?

Unless Atletico really do want a player from Spurs in return.

Just in case he doesn't join us, can we start running him down and re-writing history?

i'll go first: He does seem to get a lot of muscle injuries.

Well, he's only going to be warming the bench at [whichever club he is linked with].

Atletico apparently have shown interest in Morgan....wonder if something can be done.

Anyway, after JRod signing for Spurs, I'll just wait to see what happens before taking what the papers say as gospel.

Toby and cash for Morgan? Works for me.

Exactly how many goals and assists did he get last season? I'd expect more from a truly top class player.

He only looked good because he was playing next to Fonte? And/or behind our midfield? Just another Lovren?

The sunday times article is worrying. Says Paul Mitchell was much involved in recruiting him to us, and now in getting him to spurs, and worst of all claims that Tony himself says spurs are likely to sign him.

Toby ...can't edit since my sub didn't go through yet again.

Very good player but it's perfectly fair criticism.

Koeman was the man who persuaded Toby to sign not Mitchell

As much as i would be gutted if Toby went elsewhere (especially bloody Spurs) i am confident that in RK he has alternatives lined up. We have to believe that RK knows a good defender when he sees one and one that would suit the Premiership. I'm sure we could find someone that will do the job and welcome being a first team player, playing in the Premiership, playing in Europe and playing for RK....the last bit cannot be understated at all.

We should really look to break the bank if necessary. If we get him, we'd only need another 3-4 players to complete our squad

But if we broke the bank how could we afford the 3-4 players?

One of the perks of being able to sign players early, as we have done this summer, is that we can nip in and try to get players before other teams have finance in place. If Spurs need to raise funds by selling 10 players, then Saints get in there quick with Toby and try to get him signed up before they have a chance.

I do think he'll make a mistake if he goes to Spurs, he already knows he's first choice here, but I do think there are alternatives lined up if it happens. He did get a fair few injuries last season too...

he'd be first choice at spurs to I would imagine.

in the papers, Toby has apparently told friends that he is close to joining spurs

Alternatively he has told AM that he wants to join Saints. All these reports are based on nothing more than speculation.

Atletico could draw things out all summer in hope of influencing market. But info is Alderweireld has told them he wants to join #SaintsFC

Lyall Thomas ‏@LyallThomas 1h1 hour ago

On Alderweireld; decision rests w/Atletico. Could keep him, could deal w/ Soton or could sell to highest bidder... no decision yet #SaintsFC

S-Clarke posted this on one if the transfer threads...

On the plus side clearing out 10 first teamers should mean they will take time to "gel" the new team so they will be well of the pace first half of the season. Also means they would need to bring in more than Toby and Morgan as replacements having already spent what 39 million (if you include the 3.5 million for Tripper) can't see those 10 first teamers bring in that much in the way of cash and don't reckon spurs can afford to spend much more....even if they can actually sell any of their dud first teamers. It's like saints trying to fund a spending spree by flogging off Osvaldo, Mayuka, Kelvin, Gaston and Gardos .

Spoken to my contact at Spurs. No further enquiries regarding Morgan since 3 weeks ago. Spurs still keen but nowhere near our valuation. As for Toby, expect a bid from Spurs this week.

I imagine most clubs are in that position. I have no doubt Koeman would love to sign Messi if only Barca would flog him to us for 10 million.......

I have also spoken to my contact at Spurs . He says they are not in for toby

But they said its just a couple of spurs fans who are floating this story to try to wind up Saints fans .

Seems like they be succeeding

I doubt it. He would not be a suitable replacement for Pelle and we have the winger roles covered already.

I have spoken to my contact at Spurs, he said they are preparing a British record bid for Martin Chivers.

I have been told that they are going to offer us Frank Saul as a make weight.

I remember that happening one Christmas was ****ed off as I always thought Martin Chivers was a really good player for Saints helped us enormously to get to Div 1 in harness with Terry Paine
