Atleti would be crazy to think they can get away with anything less than the 2mil break clause fee, and at least half of his transfer fee in excess of our buy clause. But, the way that club is run, I'm sure they think they're getting the moon. Anyhow, this whole fiasco might wind up effectively paying Gardos' transfer fee, and I'm not panicked about the prospect of him playing games this season.

The down-the-road, attorneys-and-tribunals drama will come when the club try to haul THFC before the FA/UEFA for giving Toby a medical when they had no contractual right to do so. I would imagine they have the weight to get away with a slap on the wrist, but it would be nice if it were more. God knows they deserve it.

If we are just negotiating compensation for a breach of contract, then surely that would be handled by our lawyers. Les Reed's job is to recruit players, not resolve legal disputes over players that are going to other clubs. So, I'd take the article as just another speculative pile of crap. (Disclaimer: I've not read the article; I'm just going on your summary of it).

I agree, Les Reed is a football man not Rumpole of the Bailey !

Probably clutching at straws but it does say that the dispute has to be resolved. If I read correctly it's the journalist's take on it that means compensation.

And Spurs have acted in good faith on AM's word that they could sell to who they like. That directly contradicts Saints' position. Les has more likely gone to assert that they can't sell to Spurs.

It's certainly not clear or it would have been done by now.

So basically he prefers Spurs to us. I hope people take that into account before they start moaning about our part in this .

Once again it's the journalist's statement that Saints lack the will of Alderweireld, not a quote from him.

Other reports say he's happy with either club, just wants it sorted. And that's why Spurs are trying to sort it first.

Just cos it's the guardian doesn't make it true.

At least they got the name of our new signing right at the bottom of the article....oh....

why is it spurs fault?

surely, any signing will have to be authorised by the premier league and all that

ALDERWEIRELD SAINTS' NO. 1 TARGET

Sky Sports understands that Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld is still Southampton's No. 1 target, despite the Belgium having undergone a medical at Spurs earlier today.

And we also believe that the south cost club have made an offer of €20m for the player in the hope of turning last season's loan move into a permanent deal this summer.

However, the Saints have yet to receive a response from Atleti.

Clever as he is NOT even in the UK currently everyone take a chill pill

Another way to deal with it. On the centre back front move on and buy a replacement. On the AM front take it to the bitter end and give no agreement.

If Mitchell was aware of the clause, which he surely must have been, I fail to see how Spurs have acted in 'good faith'.

why do they need to act in good faith. if our authorities authorise him to play in this country then little has been done wrong and we have let him get away

'He'd be able to fly home more easily from London'! Got to hit the word count for the boss I guess.

I'm sure this is high on the priority list of most high earning footballers when choosing a club....

Posted
But didn't his Dad/agent tweet that no deals had been even close like three hours ago?

Anyone close to Spurs media wise - ''It's all agreed, all positive with Spurs''

anyone remotely close to Toby, i.e his flaming father ''It's not agreed, nothing is concrete''

So much unquoted stuff as well, easily can be plucked from the air. The only quoted stuff has been from his father. I mean, the line ''He can fly home from London more easily'' is one of the pointless reasons to justify a move. I'd love to know who is feeding them, as it's not as close to the truth as people believe - IMO.

Maybe Mitchell knew there was a loophole in the clause (something that hasnt hit the public domain yet) that Spurs could legitimately exploit? (Yes, I know, conspiracy theory territory so pinches of salt at the ready)

In response to the Guardian article. They don't have to have acted in good faith but surely Mitchell, and therefore Levy, knew about the terms of the clause?

and if they get him, they have done nothing wrong. more so if English football ratifies the deal.

I think the only time I've seen Koeman remotely "angry" was after the Sheffield United game last year.

He was pretty hacked off after Sunderland away too...

...As was I! Worst value miles-per-minute I've ever seen; awful awful game.

You would think agreeing compensation in this case would be down to the lawyers and financial gurus.......

A breaking news on sky , Spurs set to make a second bid for Matt Le Tissier

, they have thrown in a free 4 week 5 star weight watchers break to get the Southampton star to sign at long last

Macdonalds may take legal action if Spurs don't drop the 4 week health farm from the transfer fee

Every single visit over the past 2/3 seasons has been utter ****.

As a complete guess maybe they have offered us a slice of the deal to drop potential legal action and Reed is negotiating the amount?

Also allegedly Madrid haven't responded to our renewed offer for Alderweireld.

Honestly, there is little point trying to make sense of this. Messiest transfer saga I can remember us being involved in.

Crikey ! ...how did he get involved in this deal ? ...

Why are people persisting in this nonsense that Mitchell is the reason any clause loophole or details became known to spurs . AM will have told anyone interested to drive up the price by creating an auction and agents will to drive up interest and therefore wages. Are people seriously trying to say that had Mitchell never left saints AM would have kept quiet and just accepted the £6.8 million . The only reason for the buy back clause is to open up an auction if he had a good season . To think its out because of an ex employe is barmy.

At times like this I cast a wistful glance back to the relative peace and calm of our League One days......

it was easy then, we trod on everyone like liverpool do to us

It's not just missing out, it's the thought of a rival then having Alderweireld and Vertonghen as their central defence. Could be excellent for them, they just need s slightly better central midfield.

Vertonghen was woeful last season and I get the feeling it doesn't matter which 4 defenders you put in that spurs team, with that midfield you will expose them and leak goals and particularly with MP's style. Not dissimilar to Liverpool and BR actually

Rubbish. It was the same reaction when our move for Liam Fontaine collapsed.

Who did we tread on? I seem to remember paying good prices for the players that we signed.

I hope either way we know for certain where he is next season by page 60. Enough is enough.

I'm on page 64, just for the record.

52 pages now. Has this surpassed the Ramirez saga thread yet?

Or the Rudi Skacel thread. I thought that Toby was off on his honeymoon at the moment? Do people go to Enfield on honeymoon?

Posted
So how have we been trodden on?

I do not think that is a question for me. more so for the squinnies moaning about liverpool and now spurs

I missed the first 20 minutes due to a Metro/overland train screw up, and every single time I've arrived late to a match (4 times in the past 12 years) it's been just in time to see us concede a goal - twice it was a penalty. So my value miles to minute was actually slightly higher, but I saw 20 minutes less football.

and so a season of watching and moaning about Yoshidas lack of quality awaits.

To be fair thought he improved last season and unlucky to lose out when Toby came back from injury
