Today is International Women's Day

You could maybe suggest why the first priority of all animals isn't to ensure the survival of future generations? Or do what you are currently doing which is the equivalent of running away. Genuinely interested in why you think that is wrong.

I'm not running away. I'm just lost any sense of respect for you when you said feminists are the worst kind of people. And because I lost respect, it made the effort involved in responding to your antiquated meanderings, not worth the effort I was putting in. All on a thread about International Women's Day! Even you must see the irony in that!

People are fundamentally cognitively different from animals. We have complex culture and that makes all the difference. Like seriously, this is primary school biology. Why does this need to be pointed out?

Well duh. No need to state the blinking obvious. Still haven't addressed my basic point though about the continuing survival of the species.

Still can't find the posts you referred to earlier Andy.

You're telling him not to state the blinking obvious, while still running with your killer point...that women have babies!!

Seemingly lou and possibly Andy seem to disagree with what I thought was a fairly clear point. Would be interesting to know what they believe the primary function of the human race is.

Selection doesn't happen at the level of the species anyways, it's at the level of the individual, but that's a side point.

Nature =/= Culture.

And isn't subservient to it either. To quote Richard Dawkins 'We alone on earth can rebel against the tyranny of the selfish replicators'. And I'm glad we do, because life and culture would be pretty miserable otherwise. So, you do not have a basic point, you just seem to be excusing universal subjugation of people based on genitals because 'survival of the species'. Do you really think if we treated everyone equally regardless of genitals, then society would collapse. What are you afraid of?

There isn't an innate 'function' to race, although there seems to be an instrumental use of it by organisations to divide and oppress. So it's what people have made of it. If you look at the genetic structure of humans, it's very narrow and overlapping compared to other species. The differences are minuscule and we largely base race on a few insignificant differences like skin colour (which is decided by very few genes). There is far more that unites the 'races' than divides them. The 'function' of why some of us look different is down to stuff I'm sure that you already realise to do with pigmentation and sunlight etc.

Well needless to say I disagree with your assertions about humans lacking a function but I'm grateful that you actually took the time to compose an answer.

We have a moral imperative to end open defecation and a duty to ensure women and girls are not at risk of assault and rape simply because they lack a sanitation facility.

Actually, I didn't disagree with anything. I chose to not respond. Partly because it was a random statement thrown into the topic. Partly because a anonymous bloke on a football forum telling me what my primary purpose is, grossed me out (!), and partly because I don't want to waste my time responding to someone who is making endless pointless statements, then insisting people respond to them (needy) or equating feminism (ie equality between men and women) with one person (which is a bit daft).

That said, I'm digging SaintAndy's responses!

It isn't personal lou, and feminism encompasses a lot more than just equality as I'm sure you know.

I'm not taking it personally Hypo. I'm just responding to your posts.

I think you've probably got a bit of an old-school take on what 'feminism' stands for. My generation's version is about equality, that's all I care about. I guess we can be a bit softer with it (less of the aggressive stuff from our previous generation) because the really outrageous stuff they were fighting against, isn't so acceptable these days (though it still happens). But it's still there behind the scenes, on the quiet. And sometimes not so behind the scenes. Sometimes it's on film, it's upfront and aggressive, yet still people defend it...(it's a one off! it's banter!)

So when I say I'm feminist. What I'm saying is, I've got a right to be treated equally. As have all the other women around me. Not patronised. Not excluded. Not paid less. Not told I'm less talented. Not told what I must like. Not told I'm a slag. Not shouted at by random strangers. Not told I can't do something. Not get that disgusting sucking noise when I walk pass cars at traffic lights, not have to stand at a bus stop at night next to an advert with a woman in her underwear. All that stuff and more. I don't think it's much to ask. I can't imagine ever treating a man that way.

Great - thread about International Women's Day reduced to posts demeaning women to just objects of sexual desire or servants to men. Well done everyone, you've just proven the point.

You're a very dull and odd young man, aren't you young Andy.

No, the point of feminism is equality between the genders. There's some disagreement about how to achieve that - at a most basic level liberal vs. radical feminism (though that being basic means it's an extremely simplistic division), but all have the same goal of 'equality'. Though even equality is a bit of a heterogenous term, though I imagine all feminists would *at the very least* want equality of opportunity, which is still a long way off.

Edit: Coxford_lou put it way better than I ever could!

Sorry, just picking up on the underwear thing, I had this everyday for a month all the way through my tube station.

As I don't seem to understand what sexism is, is this sexist?

With respect to the wage gap Lou it's a myth now, in fact it has gone in the other direction. With notable exceptions women are paid more for the same position and more women are studying further and graduating than men.

My missus is 5 years younger, been at the company 3 years less, and is paid £10K less than her equivalent controller in another part of the company. Positive discrimination is alive and well.

She puts it down to her boss being female.

And how does it make you feel when you see that image? Because when I'm stood next to an image of a women dressed in her underwear, at night, I'm not getting on my moral ground here, I actually feeling quite vulnerable. To the point I feel I should move.

Honestly, hand on heart, I thought, "**** me, even I'd have a go on that". He's an adonis. Swear on my daughters life. You have to respect it. Feel the same about our own Graziano!

After you accept these things, life's so much better.

Why haven't I? I'm not a very attractive bloke. I don't have washboard abs, or a great little goatee. I would say I am below average. But **** happens!

Because I am ok with that  What are you wearing?
