Tottenham want Toby

i bloody hate Spurs and everything about them. Makes me vomit every time they sing our song and pretend it's theirs. Or go on about being a big club when they get beaten. I hope they spiral into crappiness again and Pochettino gets the push. Rant over. Sun's out.

Would be amazed if there weren't a host of clubs (PL and otherwise) after him come the end of the season. Going to be a massive battle
Yep. It's a bit of a pointless article, I'm sure Spurs want him, but so will every other team in the PL. Someone like Man CIty that are desperate for a top CB would be more like where he'll end up. I'd back us to compete if we were just up against Spurs for him.

you could make an argument that Man U could use all of Schneiderlin, Clyne and Toby as mentioned above as the most likely departees this summer. They could end up writing a cheque almost as big as Liverpool did last summer

Funny listening on talksport about whether they can hold on to Kane for next season or beyond when a "big club" come in for him. Big club maybe but if one of Man U Liverpool Chelsea arsenal want one of their players then according to talksport it's when not if they go.. Sound familiar?

Eww that sounds annoyingly plausible :(

B - not sure if this is your usual tongue in cheek comment or not? But why on earth would a £10M bid from Spuds be appealing to AM? They would have to pay a 1.5M buyout, which on top of say a rounded figure of 7M for permanent deal is 8.5M. Surely Saints would pay an additional 1.5M to keep him, and Tony would want to stay for regular footy, which is no guarantee at Spurs? Maybe it's just me???

If we made champions league and Spurs didn't, would it be a step up?

No current Spurs players would be angling to move a "step up" and sign for us, that's for sure. One season of CL qualification once does not turn us into some mega club.

So, if we qualified for the CL, none of the current Spurs players would want to move to little old Saints? And you are sure of this. Ok.

By the way, what is a mega club? Is it something you've just made up to enforce your Saints fans are 'delusional' point?

I cant think of any players that spurs have will come to us. we hardly sign anyone from the league anyway.

Breaking News: Kane in Pochettino Showdown talks.

His agent said "As soon as Harry heard about Saints CL qualification playoff against AEK Athens he knew where his future lay. He's desperate to make that step up into football's top table, and that's Southampton and no mistake".

While I agree it is very unlikely, wouldn't you love to read that headline this summer.

We can't compete with them in three main areas - revenue, fan delusion, or boardroom delusion (the latter two categories only bettered by the History Boys at Liverpool). They are an upgrade on Saints in the way that Jimmy Savile is an upgrade on Simon Mayo.

Arguably, they've gone backwards in the last three years, hopefully this trend will continue until they disappear up their own *rses - http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2012/jun/16/tottenham-hotspur-delusions-grandeur

I don't know, we've got a fair few deluded fans....

Of course Spurs are 'bigger' than us. Always have been. More fans, more revenue, better history. Why though is it 'delusional' to think that if we qualified for CL/Europe and Spurs didn't (and with only 10 games to go we are 2 points ahead of them, albeit they have a game in hand, so the situation is hardly 'delusional' in its own right) that some of their squad would fancy a move to us? What is this rule that you can only move to a 'bigger' club? How did we get players like Bertrand and Alderweireld? I don't think anyone believes that we are going to pinch Kane.

when blackburn got into the premier league top four they signed david batty from 5th place leeds. the champions of a couple of years earlier.

i'm not saying we're able to flash the same sort of cash against blackburn. just showing that someone was willing to leave a big club for a smaller club in a better position.

sod it got my wires crossed. leeds had a terrible season the season before batty left. that muddies the comparison somewhat.

Betrand and Toby didn't move to us because it was a "step up" though, which is the phrase you are arguing about.

Us being in the Champions League is not going to make any Spurs player see us as a step up, because it won't be.

The delusion that Spurs aren't a step up from us will never die.

lol really a delusion? think you are the deluded one, Spurs as it currently stands is a sideways move, I mean they are one point above us for a start, they wont get champions league, not this year nor the next, nor many after not realistically, their best players will move to Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City etc just like ours and they have done f*ck all for 50 years.

Plus I doubt they can pay much more than we can these days either.

So doubt any of our players would agitate to move to Spurs. Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, Man City yes, these clubs are much bigger than us, but they are also much bigger than Spurs.

Players want to play in the Champions League, challenge for titles, get paid 100k a week and play in front of big crowds in big matches.

Spurs offers none of that, over us they offer London, Europa league and probably 20k a week extra.

OMG such a step up!
