Saint Garrett Posted 25 June, 2015 Author Posted 25 June, 2015 hate seeing our better players leave, makes me think of what might have been in terms of keeping them all and having a wonder side. But having signed him when out of contract it's not really surprising that he would not sign a new deal with us, so getting £10.5m and £2m on the never never is perhaps not a terrible price (it pains me to say that). The value does depends on how well his replacement does next season. I do worry a little. Clyne's pace got us out of jail a lot and prevented pacey widemen from taking the ****. Hope Soares has real pace? Having two fullbacks with realpace is a huge reason why ur defence has been so good the last coupe of season. Yup - and having a shield of Morgan/Wanyama which will be no more....certainly a bit of a worry.

benjii Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 I can't really see the point of Liverpool, other than more money (which is fair enough) but there is a risk that by joining them and not holding out for a better team next summer he is foregoing any chance of football success for the next few years. I guess Clyne is young enough to sign a three or four year deal with Liverpool and still have another big move to a club with a realistic chance of winning more than a league cup every decade when he is 28 or so. I wouldn't be surprised if he runs his contract at Liverpool down and does exactly that - and fair play to him. In the meantime he probably doubles his wages. If I was his agent I'd be asking for Glenn Johnson's wages!

If I was his agent I'd be asking for Glenn Johnson's wages! Oh come on as much as I hate them, they are a prestigious club, the media love in for starters, will ensure he'll become more of a household name, he'll most likely be a shoe in for England now he plays for them, all this will bring in more money through sponsorships etc, which I'm sure is all he really cares about and who can blame him that's why I go to work. If he was really interested in playing in champions league he'd probably hold out for a better club but it only takes one bad turn and he's out for a year so got to take it whilst he can.
hypochondriac Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 Why? Is it your money? How does another 2.5 affect you? Did us paying over the top for Long impact you in anyway? Did us ripping Arsenal off for Chambers help you in anyway? What does it matter to any 'fan' either way its not your money and you can't influence it in anyway either apart from whingeing on a forum. We have signed 2 good players it seems for under 10m ....sounds like the club know what they are doing far better than you and the Austrian whingebag give credit for. Why should we comment on anything if that's your attitude? And why are you lumping me in with alpine? All I said was I wouldn't be that happy with 12.5 million, a view shared by many. It's irrelevant though as supposedly it hasn't been agreed yet so it appears that the club agrees with me.

Bewildered Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 A lower fee than people will have hoped for, but don't doubt for a second that Clyne would have sat out his contract and ****ed off on a free if we'd have demanded more. Now get Schneiderlin out the door quickly too so the club can start doing the more costly and important deals (replacing Schneiderlin and Alderweireld).
Mallagroth Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 Would love Rickie to come back, bit like a mascot for our club. Not sure how much game time he'd actually get, but as part of a deal with that lot we should definitely have asked about a loan back or similar. Also Liverpool will want Jay Rod by this time next year, wait and see.

We more than likely started doing that a year ago. It's hardly a secret Morgan want's to leave and signing Toby permanently was never a sure bet. We've probably been negotiating with other players and their clubs for months over potential replacements. Would love Rickie to come back, bit like a mascot for our club. Not sure how much game time he'd actually get, but as part of a deal with that lot we should definitely have asked about a loan back or similar. I think one more and I wouldn't waste it on a has-been like Lambert, painful though it is to say it.
COMEONYOUREDS Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 Don't see how Palace could have made sure of anything like that article suggests, the fee was set by a tribunal. There could still be a sell on clause but that's obviously poorly researched

VectisSaint Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 Would love Rickie to come back, bit like a mascot for our club. We already have Sammy and Super Saint. Surely 2 dog mascots are enough. They are also more mobile and entertaining than Rickie, it really would be embarrassing to have a great player like Rickie made to dress up as a dog doing Gangnam at half-time.
suewhistle Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 Nah, I killed her and buried the body under my patio. So I suppose our equivalent this season is to stuff Liverpool?
Golac's Iron Gonads Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 We'll see how happy he is after discovering his house is burgled every time he plays in the Europa league and that his midfield now contains Milner and Henderson not Wanyama and Scnneiderlin. A really poor move for him, what is he going to learn from Rodgers? The only plusses will be more money and a regular England place, if you can call that a plus.

That said, no defender has joined Liverpool under Rodgers' reign and got better. He will have a different challenge now.

Chez Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 (edited) Yup - and having a shield of Morgan/Wanyama which will be no more....certainly a bit of a worry. good point. Morgan's own electric page that enabled him to track breaking wingers was also a huge factor in us conceding so few goals. It's easy for fans to see what players can do with the ball, but off the ball work and positioning, that often goes unnoticed, makes the difference defensively. Going back to Clyne, it wasn't just his pace that made him so effective, it was his positioning, judging of distances (that are important when deciding when to leap into a tackle and when to drop off) and his decision making. When to go, when not. Soares looks good on the ball. I hope he has these off the ball elements too. Edited 25 June, 2015 by Chez
Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 Did anyone else see Sky's feature on how Liverpool are most likely to line-up next season? There was no place for Lovren, Lambert of Lallana in the starting 11. This alone should be a warning to the likes of Clyne that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Liverpool, like Saints, will have at least 50 games next season, there's plenty of time for everyone to get plenty of playing time. Football has become a squad game and if you don't have reasonable cover for every position you get wild dips in form.
Unbelievable Jeff Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 Why are people saying that if Clyne goes to Liverpool, and if Toby goes to Spurs, they're not showing any ambition??? Liverpool and Spurs are both much bigger clubs, with more fans, will pay more, have a greater chance of winning trophies and are more likely to get Champions League football.

The best thing about them signing Clyne is that it stops Brendan from literally trying every other player at right-wing back.

Perhaps, I do not much concern myself with Liverpool, they are a giant club with a record of titles, cups and CL wins (well just the one but about 5 European Champion's Cups I think). Any player would feel honoured to be part of that set up I think.

(just ask Lambert or Chambers) When you come from a club like saints were you are the "first name on the team sheet" type of player becoming a squad player might not be all it's cracked up to be. If it was we would never have got Toby on loan last season. Having said that Clyne is more than good enough to play regularly for Liverpool.

Absolutely, neither Lambert or Chambers are really top 4 club material. Lallana will play a lot next season I think, can't see why he wouldn't, last summer was very tiring for WC players and an awful lot of them had dips in form and on and off injuries, it happens after every WC cup summer even if they're not in the searing heat of Brazil for 6 weeks or so.

I have to be honest but I doubt most modern footballers could give a stuff about club history....other than a useful sound bite in those suck up to the fans interviews they do when they join a new club. It's all about money and the chance to win silverware. Liverpool will give Clyne the first and he might get lucky with the second and win the league cup so he will be happy. Meanwhile saints will get on with training up Liverpool's new signings for next season.
SuperSAINT Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 From SSN Transfer Centre. (Interesting bit at the end). Liverpool are close to reaching a £12.5million agreement to sign Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne, according to Sky sources. Sky Sports reported earlier this month that the Reds had seen a £10m flatly rejected by Saints, who want at least £15m for the highly-sought-after right-back. It is believed the Merseyside club are in discussions over a structured deal that would take the fee up towards the £15m-mark based on certain conditions that would eventually be met by the player.
sadoldgit Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 If Clyne doesn't want to be here, and lets face it, he has been hedging his bets for weeks, why would you want to keep him? Good as he is he isn't consistent yet and could be another Lovren for Liverpool. I'd rather have a squad that want to be here and are committed.

for_heaven's_Saint Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 If he goes, he goes. Same with Toby and Morgan. After last summer, the club deserve our faith in their transfer policy.

Pilchards Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 It's amazing how we make them great players and they **** off on the first offer from a higher placed club. Lovren, Lallana, Chambers, Lambert, Clyne & Morgan. I bet you my last dollar that Mane & Wanyama will go next summer too.

warsash saint Posted 25 June, 2015 Posted 25 June, 2015 So everyone on here moaning at Clyne leaving would all refuse a huge pay rise if offerred to them to show loyalty to their present employer? I know I wouldn't!
