Seen a lot on here and twitter saying it's a sideways move, all for money etc.

Come on, it's not a sideways move. We have won 1 major trophy in 130 years and just celebrated finishing 7th. They had a terrible season yet played in the Champions League, got to 2 semi finals and finished above us. He'll virtually guarantee his England place. And yes, he'll probably double his wages. Who can blame him?

I'm just miffed at the small amount.

It is a bit of an insult really, I was originally expecting something close to £18-20m, despite him only having one year of his contract left. Especially given the scrambling around which is currently being done for English players.

I'm amazed people think it's a low amount in the circumstances. He's not that good to justify £20 million when he goes for nothing in 12 months

I would have been satisfied with 15.

I think the thing is not Liverpool being bigger than us but more that with his talent he could do better. Are Liverpool an improvement on us ...sure..... but they are not one of the PL big boys any more very much a club in decline compared to City, Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea. They are a club that might win the odd cup, will make the Europa league most of the time might even get the odd top four (once in a blue moon) I just think Clyne was good enough to play for a bigger club than that. He did an interview about wanting to play regular CL a while back does anyone think moving to pool will get him that?

Posted

I will not be sad to see Clyne go. He's a very good right back as we've seen but he's not irreplaceable, and he did have a Lovren-esque half good season last year. The season before he was made to fight for his place with Chambers, and that upped his game, whereas last season I think he got a little bit content in the knowledge he was our only specialist right back.

£12.5 is not bad business for a player with one left on his contract, especially if he's said something to the board about wanting to join them. Get rid. We have Soares and I'm assuming are looking for another young right back as cover (Byram?) as I think I read on here we were after 2 right backs. Failing that get Toby back in and have him filling in when needed as he did last season. I'd rather get Clyne and Morgan out now, before pre-season starts, than have them upsetting the apple cart in training.

As for Liverpool, well, the less said about them the better.

So much for our board holding out for 15m.

Pathetic.

Just seen a tweet that said it was koeman's decision to get it sorted before preseason. Make me feel a bit better about it.

Bet lambert is part of the deal ;)

Sincerely hope not. Great guy, great player for us, but that was then and this is now. It would be a real shame to see him back a pale shadow of his former self.

Southampton have accepted improved offer from Liverpool for @Nathaniel_Clyne, worth up to £12.5m, @TonyBarretTimes reports. Link to follow

A bit gauling we didn't hold out for the extra £2m just because its Liverpool. However, with only the one year left we had to play it farily cool I imagine. Hope the add-ons are not too silly.

Hopefully not one for winning the league...no fecking chance of that happening!

there is absolutely no point in getting hung up over the "reported price" because it will be officially " undisclosed. The press almost always make it sound like the "bigger" club has got the better deal to maintain the perception and because media outlets like sky would rather p*** off 50,000 Saints fans than 200,000 Liverpool fans in their reporting.

Whatever it is, the club are happy to take it so lets move on with players who want to be here. What matters is the overall balance of the books and the overall strength in quality and numbers of the squad. What you may perceive we "lost" on one deal we may well "make" on another.

BBC saying it isn't done:

BBC Sport have been told that reports of a £12.5m bid being accepted are premature and that any agreement remains some way off.

I take it moving to Liverpool is a good enough reason for us to boo him next season.

Also do Palace get any cut of the deal?

Yep - moving to a team with a realistic chance of CL fair enough - moving to a team marginally better than us ie Spurs/Scousers then F**k um money grabbing parasites

Good news. Well done saints, hold out for what we are entitled to.

You are deluded then. £20m would be an amazing deal for him one year into a 5 year contract. £12.5m for a right back with a year left on his deal isn't bad by any means. Is he worth £10m more than Bertrand? I'm not disappointed with the price im disappointed he's gone to Liverpool, although whatever the mugs on here might says it's still a step up for him but he could have gone to a genuine top 4 club.

Hope he's made the right choice.

Clearly doing it for the wages - history is irrelevant, there's no difference between us and them going into next season.

Tbh I didn't really care much all through this, I don't care now it's done. He had a choice to be a part of the Saints journey and he's chosen a different path.

a) Not confirmed that he has left b) Where does it say that the Board are holding out for £15M?

Well with that and Schneiderlins new-found optimisim that his future is resolved in the next few days, it may well be that Ronny has got p*ssed off with the touchy-feely crap.

I just dont like being screwed again by the most pompous, narcissistic, self-pitying, self-entitled-feeling club in football...........

£12.5m. Bit of an insult, frankly.

Watch him get picked for England's starting XI now.

That's pretty much what we spend on Clyne and Bertrand together. It's not an insult, for a 24 year old with a year left it's a reasonable enough price. Arsenal sold RVP for £24m because he had a year left and refused to sign. These delusions of £20m plus are a bit nuts.

Just console yourself with the thought of how well Brenda has improved Saints old boys last season. A few weeks of Brenda's training and being played out of position by the football genius that is Brenda Rodgers and Clyne will be worth less than a packet of Walkers crisps....

If he goes, he goes. And if the club feel they got an acceptable fee, so be it. As long as we have someone to challenge Cedric (either recruited or promoted from within the club), this is just part of the football business. Days of player loyalty are mainly gone & as long as we have a good, competitive team, I'll be happy whoever is in it.

The intriguing part for me is whether Le Goddard knows something or is being mischievous. I'd certainly be happy to see Rickie back if it keeps Pellè on his game.

Why? Is it your money? How does another 2.5 affect you? Did us paying over the top for Long impact you in anyway? Did us ripping Arsenal off for Chambers help you in anyway?

What does it matter to any 'fan' either way its not your money and you can't influence it in anyway either apart from whingeing on a forum.

We have signed 2 good players it seems for under 10m ....sounds like the club know what they are doing far better than you and the Austrian whingebag give credit for.

Screwed again Alps? I thought we did pretty well out of them last season. If anything we screwed THEM.

By all accounts, if clyne has asked the club to listen to liverpool's offer then he has waived his loyalty bonus... We've got near enough £15m in which case.

And are our fans deluded... If we wanted £15m we would have asked for £18m.... you don't ask for the amount you want, you ask for more.

Personally think that we've got a very good deal for clyne considering he has 1 year left.... Cedric sounds like a quality replacement and this deal alone covers our other transfers this summer. 1 out, 3 in.... with morgan to go for £25m, Half of liverpool's summer transfer spend (2015) and the tv monies still to spend.

I'm happy enough, just wasn't a mug who expected the club to get any mroe for this player, the board have no leg to stand on in that they have to sell and 12.5m is pretty good in that situation.

You have to submit a transfer request to waive the loyalty bonus, which he hasn't done. Effectively he's said sell me now or I'll leave on a free next year.

hate seeing our better players leave, makes me think of what might have been in terms of keeping them all and having a wonder side.

But having signed him when out of contract it's not really surprising that he would not sign a new deal with us, so getting £10.5m and £2m on the never never is perhaps not a terrible price (it pains me to say that).

The value does depends on how well his replacement does next season. I do worry a little. Clyne's pace got us out of jail a lot and prevented pacey widemen from taking the ****. Hope Soares has real pace? Having two fullbacks with realpace is a huge reason why ur defence has been so good the last coupe of season.

Not sure I'm `happy enough', but agree there ws very little the club could do. Clyne held (holds) all the cards.

Ben Smith at the Beeb also tweeted:

@BenSmithBBC: #LFC expect Nathaniel Clyne to sign a 5-year-deal when he returns from hols. 12.5m the fee. A striker still a target.

So not sure who was denying it earlier.
