But of course it is paper talk, and the Mail at that.

Here's a little list of players Utd have been 'interested in or made an offer for" in the last 2 weeks or so (according to the press and rumour sites of course).

Sergio Ramos, Firmino, Daniel Alves, Harry Kane, Otamendi, Oblak, Clyne, Hummels, Laporte, Miranda, CRonaldo, Bale, Vlaar, Schweinsteiger, Strootman, Witsel, Cech, Van Der Wiel, Cavani, Pogba, Cillessen, Lloris, Benzema, Muller, Mandzukic, Schneiderlin, Gaitan, Sterling, Varane, Navas, Higuain, Vidal, Gundogan, Handanovic, Bacca, Dragovic, Vietto, Robben, Felipe Anderson, Jackson Martinez, Boateng, Lacazette, Sneijder, Reus.

Got to be over a billions worth of talent in there.

It can only be a money thing if he goes to Liverpool.

You reminded me of this. 2.05-2.12

Can't think of many, if any, instances of footballers celebrating their pay in post-match interviews.

Everyone vote for my England teammate & top man @jhenderson to be on the cover of #FIFA16 http://fifa16cover.co.uk

What on earth has Henderson ever done, to be on the cover of that game? He is the most bog-standard average midfield player I've ever seen. What is all this ridiculous hype over him all about, he's never done anything to earn that hype. Liverpool think he's their new Gerrard. Good luck with that.

He was dreadful last Sunday, offers nothing going forward, lacks any spark of creativity and is a major reason why England will never win anything! Lallana did more in 2 mins than he did all game! Wilshire showed how the game can be played! Total waste of space!

See, that's all I ever see him do. He very rarely assists, doesn't really score, passes sideways and backwards and doesn't seem to have any real presence on the pitch. Yet he's being lauded as a superstar.

He's also the worst footballer-actor to ever appear on an advert

He plays for a fashioned club like Manchester Utd, if Gaal and Rodgers think you are good enough then Hodgson most certainly will.

Cant wait for an England manager that chooses a team on merit and stop picking **** like Rooney, Henderson, Gibbs and Townsend.

Of course!! when one thinks about the next Fifa cover Jordan Henderson is the first person that springs to mind! :mcinnes:

Yep, more obvious than Yoshida.

Seems odd to me Clyney pushing Henderson, the well known 2nd choice England Right Back.

Not as bad as Rooney tbh.

Though I can't say that supports Henderson too much either.

That was for the Asian/Japanese version of Fifa. Yoshida is quite a big deal out there.

No worse than Qatar. I didnt even know Henderson had $10M.

I conclude Cedric is a value signing we're making regardless of Clyne and Clyne's future then dictates other moves like Jenkinson' date=' Byram etc.[/quote']

As much as i like Jenkinson, surely that would be rather odd(especially as Soares is an international), which would also block the pathway for the academy players like Stephens.

Are you ever positive about anything or are you constantly miserably?

Stephens is a CB now and spent all season playing there for Swindon. Mugabi is our U21 RB.

I could be wrong, but Stephens played in the midfield (at Swindon Town) as well as CB.

Fairly sure he played the majority of the games at CB, although he was used in midfield on at least one occasion.

Bevis Mugabi only played right back because Jake Flannigan got injured, he is normally a centre back.

Sorry chaps but am I being utterly thick here?

The Clyne tweet says 'My England team-mate'. They both play in the England team. If he meant Liverpool he would have said my 'Liverpool team-mate' or 'My new team-mate'....perhaps it's just me?

I still think he'll leave mind you, I just don't see what everyone else is seeing.

Bum-licking the next Liverpool captain is seen as pretty bad form when you have been subject to a transfer offer from that club.

Ten seconds of research tells me that the leading options for FIFA16 cover are currently Henderson, Aguero, Kane and Courtois.

Given that the competition rules state that

"4. Prize(s)

 One (1) winner will win One (1) Harry Kane signed Tottenham Hotspur Shirt.

 One (1) winner will win One (1) Sergio Agüero signed Manchester City shirt.

 One (1) winner will win One (1) Jordan Henderson signed Liverpool shirt.

 One (1) winner will win One (1) Thibaut Courtois signed Chelsea FC shirt"

I can conclude you can ONLY vote for those 4, and that of the 4 options he'd be most likely to support either of the English players he's actually played alongside... It's not like Pelle or Bertrand are up for the vote.

Posted

And this kind of thing suggests to me that Clyne may have some kind of media deal to plug FIFA, which explains why he has to tweet about it at all.

Are there any other tweets from other players plugging teammates, etc? These product placement type-things tend to follow some kind of corporate template usually.

I know he's more of a centre back, but wasn't McCarthy our right back cover for Clyne at one stage?

Posted

Our RB cover was Toby/Yoshida. They played more RB than McCarthy, but yes McCarthy was our next up on the senior team.

No problems, as of now, covering RB! Clyne here or not, we are set. On to GK and CB replacements.....

Posted (edited)

Except Toby is not here and Yoshida is so flat footed it's unreal....we definitely need another RB cover if and when Clyne goes

Yoshida's pass distribution is very poor, doesn't offer the same mobility up the flanks and worries the life out of me at centre back let alone when he is being played out of position at RB

Darren Bent @DarrenBent

gotta vote for my man @JHenderson for the #FIFA16 cover thanks for all the assists at safc! fifa16cover.co.uk pic.twitter.com/jnoMkuePsV

Assume Derby fans are going to be equally miffed about Liverpool's surprise move for Darren Bent? I suspect it's more about Henderson's football chums rallying round after the story football fans could boycott FIFA 16 if he's on the front cover (ridiculous, who spends hours staring at the front cover rather than playing the game??). Clyne may ultimately end up at Liverpool but he has played many times at U21 and full England level with Henderson and he could just be providing some moral support.

I have to say that is a very harsh and inaccurate assessment of Yoshida's value to SFC.

Sorry but he is an accident waiting to happen at right back, he has had some ok games at centre back but he definitely isn't even a premier league standard right back, so if that's our next best right back option when Clyne goes, we will get exposed against good teams in the premier league and Europe big time

Yoshida has had a solid season at cb. The way you demean him shows your clear bias against him generally.

How he fares as Rightback means nothing against his ability as a centre back.

We lost more games than we won with Yoshida having at least 45 mins on the pitch (which is a fair assessment) last season.....and this was in our most successful year. I think that stat speaks volumes. However, my point was that he isn't adequate cover at RB so it does have a bearing on the strength of our squad if we are relying on a mediocre cb playing out of position.

It doesn't really, does it?

You're ignoring other factors and just throwing a meaningless stat out there. Yoshida is a good player for us and I have no concerns over him at CB.

One of our most improved players last season. A decent squad player of the type we will need with so many games next season.

I've been a big critic of Yoshida since he joined but last season he was our most improved player. He's a solid option as back up CB

Although I doubt very much that we intend to start the season with Yoshida as a first choice centre back. For the time being it seems that only the small change and "free" transfer deals are getting done. Clubs are holding out for a maximum amount on really first rate players and the potential buyers are, as of yet, having none of it. Players will start coming back to their club in about 10 days or so I suppose and then we'll probably see the volume of business accelerating. Pity we had all those pointless internationals 10-20 days after the end of seasons, holding everything up.

well that's a matter of opinion S-Clarke but my point was more around playing a (and you can't say he is better than average) premier league cb out of position as our only real cover at RB if Clyne goes...hence why I think we need cover there still unless McCarthy can break through (and there are question marks about that currently) but I hope I am proved wrong

I think he is far more suited to being a centre back than an attacking right back (which is the type of fullback we need).

The flaw with Yoshida that seems to have him marked as a Marmite player for many commentators on this forum is he is one of those players who needs games, when he sits out he appears to get rusty quicker than some other players, then when he does get called upon he has to shake off that "ring rust" Jose plays some right stinkers like under hit back passes from time to time but because he is always on the pitch putting in a good overall performance these get over looked, Yoshida by comparison hasn't for the last 2 seasons had the luxury of maximum game time to dilute the odd error every player makes. When he gets a decent run he gets better and better, Ronald and the back room boys obviously spotted this last year and as result tried to keep him ticking over in the team, as Ronald said in one interview "it's great to have a player who can play right across the back 4 positions", if he was the pile of poo some make him out to be he wouldn't have been offered the contract extension he signed last season.

Again as Lawrie Mac always said "A good team is made up of Violinists and Roadsweepers" Maya fits the latter and as such is an important cog in the machinery.
