Sometimes people overlook the money.

If you were Clyne and someone was going to double what Saints can offer (and are also a traditionally better team) then its quite foolish in many ways to say no.

Which is why very, very few do say no.

Some people aren't all about money, especially when they've still got plenty of mileage. I think Clyne is guaranteed a big move in his career sooner rather than later, so this isn't to be seen as a ''last chance'' for his big move or anything like that. At this moment in time, looking at football-matters only, it's not the most stable of moves. He can and will do much better. He should bide his time and wait for a big, big club to come in.

And when Calum Chambers looks at that FA Cup winners' medal when he's retired he'll know he did **** all to earn it

Though to be fair to him, he did play in 4 out of the 5 rounds leading up to the Final (which by definition were all wins). So he did contribute to the team's FA Cup success this season - 3 starts, 1 sub, 1 assist, 295 minutes. There have been plenty of players who have received FA Cup winners medals for a lot less (and there are plenty who failed to get one for a lot more in the good old days)

To be fair, they were considerably better than us last season...

Not really, I would say we actually performed as well as Liverpool and Spurs but Spurs got the most luck. If we had the same amount of Luck I reckon we would of been 5th liverpool 6th spurs 7th. Our goal difference was so much better and one draw against pool and a win at home instead of 2-2 and we would of been 5th.

The amount of points Spurs got when they were the worse team on the day was astonishing

Why haven't a big, big club come in for him yet? What differnece would another year make?

Utd have been sniffing, Chelsea will be looking to replace Ivanovic sooner rather than later, City with Zabetta.

But none of them have bid. Clyne won't be wanting to negotiate a deal with one of them when he has just signed a new 4 year deal with us.

The problem we have is this saga getting drawn out all summer, it's already rumbled on too long.

He could simply sign a one year extension. It doesn't have to be a long term deal. Besides, Clyne doesn't haven't to do toffee (agents).

Maybe, but I'd be surprised if Saints agreed to that, back speculating over his future for the whole of next season.

It all depends what sort of guy each player is.

For instance, if I was a footballer I would value quality of life and enjoyment as much as the money on offer.

Pay me 1000 a day and have to work on an oil rig or pay me 500 and I work where I live and I will choose where i live as I get to enjoy my life more.

The only thing that fecks it up are agents as they would sell you to Bagdad United for enough money.

Hmm, I don't think so....because it'd be implied that he'd be going next summer (offers pending). It wouldn't be ideal of course, but the points remains, a long-term contract isn't the only option here. If Clyne wanted to wait for a top 4 club, and the club want to keep him, I can't see a problem with a 1-2 year extension.

I am not sure that would be wise as it doesn't really address the future of the player - it basically says that he doesn't have a very appealing offer now so he'll wait and see. It won't reflect well on him nor Saints to be honest. I would rather a new 4 year deal signed with some clauses in relating to Champions League clubs etc. Of course, those clauses don't need to be revealed and the contract protects the players value without him appearing to be undecided about things.

Also at the end of a career which only lasts about 15 years it's what you have to show for it that counts. No-one is going to remember getting beaten 1-0 at some Ukranian minnow in the play-offs for the Europa League. Trophies, titles and caps are all that count when you sum it up at the end. Who can remember who played for us in Bucharest 10 years ago, no doubt a few can but at Wembley in 1976, well even those who weren't there know what the side was.

What a great post. Can you post it every time a transfer speculation thread comes up please?

Brendan Rodgers will survive as Liverpool manager - but only if he accepts the transfer policy implemented by the club's owners.

I wonder what that policy will include? ''Don't spend any more of our flaming money''.

"Stop buying players from Southampton" maybe?

Given the detail given about their committee in that "Being Liverpool" ESPN (?) documentary a couple of years back, I'm not sure what they're going to do any differently.

I think Jason McCarthy will be second choice RB this season, after all we do want to eventually have a team with half of our own in.

Unfortunately we seem to be getting further from, rather than closer to this aspiration. If we want to continually improve and compete higher up the division, then we need the players from the academy to be at least mid-table Premier League quality, which is a big ask in itself. Then when you factor in that anyone who demonstrates that quality gets snapped up by one of the bigger clubs within a couple of seasons, I will be mightily impressed and surprised if we are able to achieve this goal while remaining near the top of the table.

Hope I'm wrong, I believe in the business model of producing players through the academy, it's just our ability to hang on to the ones we want that I'm not sure about.

He's a centre back though. He can play RB if required in emergency, but he's progressing into a CB. Not sure the club see him as backup right back to be honest.

I think that if the club can maximise the fee of the player then it can negate the loss by buying a similar but cheaper replacement while the academy player continues to develop and pocket the extra cash, unless the academy player is able to step up.

It means the players contracts need to be a minimum four years and never get less than two years before negotiating an extension to maximise the price if the players wants to leave, otherwise we get into the Clyne situation. So as we have seen in these past two years and should continue to see, the quality of player will slowly rise and maybe also hanging on to the academy players will occur as the club can compete at the higher end of the table rather than the survival situation we're been used to before relegation from the PL.

It's pressure on the scouting department to identify the youngsters and those older players ready for the first team to get it right but there seems to be a good framework in place to deliver it... (as long as it's followed... cough Osvaldo cough).

Yep, I totally agree that our model works as a basis for building a successful team & club, because we can make good money on our academy players and find cheaper (and hopefully equally able) replacements.

However, this is not consistent with having 50% of our players in the starting XI. To do this we have to produce top quality players from our academy at a faster rate than we sell them. Possible, and as you say, the more we improve, the higher chance of the good ones sticking around, but I still think the draw of money and glamour from the bigger clubs makes it unlikely.

Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya.

Montoya has been identified as an ideal replacement for Glen Johnson who will leave the club when his current deal expires at Anfield this month.

The 24-year-old Montoya is keen to leave the Nou Camp to secure regular first-team football next season. It is thought around £7m would be enough to land the Spanish international.

Montoya was further knocked down the pecking order after Barcelona completed the signing of Aleix Vidal from Sevilla yesterday, which has paved the way for the player to leave.

Here's hoping that happens and then that Clyne finally signs that new deal.

Expect Liverpool to come back in for Clyne early this week. Trippier being lined up as his replacement.

Where do you get your info?

Ha I didn't actually read it in the mirror at all. Sometimes I get info sometimes I don't. I'll share when I do though although last time I did it was wrong on a different site :/

Okay, you got it from someone else... who had read it in the Mirror.

What you posted is not new information, it is merely a summary of a story that appeared on the Mirror website 8 hours earlier. Why are you pretending to be itk?

I'm not you strange boy. Don't start with me MLG. I've had enough of your pedantic rubbish on the other site. I know someone who knows a players wife. That's all. If I hear something I'll share it, if I don't I won't.

Don't get you knickers in a twist babes.

This "friend of a player's wife" is being kept informed of Liverpool's transfer strategy and Southampton's transfer strategy? hmmm that sounds likely... :mcinnes:

Can you understand why someone might think the more likely version of events is that you are basing it on a remarkably similar newspaper story that was published 8 hours before your post?

Yes I can. Look I'm not getting into a **** swinging contest with you. I really don't want to put you on ignore again either so just ignore my posts. If you don't believe it, that's fine I have no problem with that, but don't use that as an excuse to derail another thread by belittling people and massaging your own ego. It's boring.

FYI the player doesn't know anything about Liverpools transfer dealings but he's mates with Clyne and all of the players talk out of season. They have these things called phones and some of them even meet up. Believe it or not, the players seem to know far more than you give them credit for but alas you already know this, as you know everything don't you?

Posted

You've only been on these forums since April 2015 and have already had me on ignore? Go me! :D

Anyone with half a brain cell will see the more likely version of events is that your post is based on a previously published national newspaper story... and not rumours from a "friend of a player's wife" who the club happen to be keeping informed of transfer policy. Why are you even trying to maintain this nonsense?

Perhaps you should put me on ignore, I wouldn't bother responding to your nonsense. Are you someone's alias?
