Saint IQ Posted 30 May, 2015 Posted 30 May, 2015 Some people are deluded . Liverpool is a big step up from us , we've just had our best season for over 20 years , 7th . Liverpool managers will get the sack for that . When was the last time we finished above Liverpool ? 2016
Saint IQ Posted 30 May, 2015 Posted 30 May, 2015 £15m would be a lot for a player who hasn't really proven anything yet and could quite easily be the next Luke Chadwick or Chris Eagles. I'd expect a loan if he did come here as I doubt we would pay what Utd might accept. Be a shock if he doesn't turn out far better than Luke Chadwick or Chris Eagles in my eyes
Saint IQ Posted 30 May, 2015 Posted 30 May, 2015 (edited) I'm 60-40 him staying now, what he was saying the other day saying we're pushing up and "why can't we be a top side" makes me think he'll sign with a 25m release clause in his contract and give us at least another season. If he goes to Liverpool of all teams that would be a right kick in the teeth and hard to take after last summer Would have lost 5 english first team players in one year 6 homegrown if (when) Morgan goes. Speaking of which I'm tempted to whack some money on Arse for the League or some sort of double next year with Morgan in their ranks, he's exactly what they've been missing since Viera and Gilberto Silva and the Defence is starting to look more solid. That's the big problem in all this. Our HG quota has taken a fair battering. Another good idea that is in fact **** to all but the richest clubs. A bit like FFP.
Redslo Posted 30 May, 2015 Posted 30 May, 2015 That's the big problem in all this. Our HG quota has taken a fair battering. Another good idea that is in fact **** to all but the richest clubs. A bit like FFP. There is some truth to this but it is not that bad. We are perfectly fine for the 4 association trained European slots. We have only two for the club trained European slots (Isgrove and Schneiderlin) but even if we had not transferred anyone only Lallana would have counted so we still would have been short. And all our younger players can play in Europe. I discussed this situation at the end of January on my blog. http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/2015/01/southamptons-european-roster-issues.html I discussed the home grown situation for all premier league clubs as part of my analysis of the newly proposed home grown rule changes: http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/2015/04/greg-dyke-and-his-terrible-horrible-no.html
Saint IQ Posted 30 May, 2015 Posted 30 May, 2015 I know we are going to be within our limits its just a shame that 7/8 of the first 11 aren't going to be homegrown as it looked like it was going to be during last season
SarniaSaint Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 If he stays or goes expect Sam Byram to be here .............not a fact but close
Lorne Malvo Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 If he stays or goes expect Sam Byram to be here .............not a fact but close My Leeds supporting mate reckons Lewis Cook is another one for the future, hopefully bag him as well to annoy him, although never seen him play!
Batman Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 has he signed a new deal yet? when is the 'new' deadline?
Donatello Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 (edited) has he signed a new deal yet? when is the 'new' deadline? The lack of comment/news articles gives you your answer (which I suspect you're aware of anyway ) Edited 31 May, 2015 by Donatello
Wopper Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Wonder if he will start jumping about like the Rat boy.
saint97 Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 My Leeds supporting mate reckons Lewis Cook is another one for the future, hopefully bag him as well to annoy him, although never seen him play! Lewis Cook is excellent. Sadly just signed a new deal with Leeds. Strong interest from Man United.
Shance Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Well, he certainly can't use the wanting to play in Europe card now.
shurlock Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Well, he certainly can't use the wanting to play in Europe card now. Of course, he can. The Europa League is like the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, compared to the Champions League.
Batman Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Well, he certainly can't use the wanting to play in Europe card now. Champions league maybe. But that rules out Liverpool if that is a sole aim (which it wouldn't be)
goneawol Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Well, he certainly can't use the wanting to play in Europe card now. Maybe he wants to play for Rodgers
Block34 Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Of course, he can. The Europa League is like the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, compared to the Champions League. ...and we won JPT!! Wait.... is Shurlock making a prediction here
Shance Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Of course, he can. The Europa League is like the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, compared to the Champions League. Yeah but Liverpool aren't in the champions league......
DuncanRG Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 I'm sure he'd prefer a move to a club in this year's Champions League but if Liverpool come calling he may (rightly) see them as having a better chance of breaking the top four than us. That plus the money, prestige of the club etc.
Chewy Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 I'm sure he'd prefer a move to a club in this year's Champions League but if Liverpool come calling [/b]he may (rightly) see them as having a better chance of breaking the top four than us. DuncanRG Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 But Liverpool have a better chance than us, and in the absence of an offer from a CL club he may see Liverpool as the best option.
CB Fry Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Really? Don't think either have a cat in hells chance of finishing above this years top four. If he goes now, it will only be for the money. a) they are far more likely to deliver European football season in, season out than we are. b) he would have joined us "for the money" too. As did anyone else we've ever signed.
Dan Johnson Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Can't believe some are arguing that Liverpool isn't a step up from us! They may have only finished 2 points above us and be in the same European competition as us, that unfortunately is where the similarities ends!! They are a massive club with global appeal and are in a different league to us financially! I'd like to see the same people argue that Stoke/Swansea as just as big as Liverpool
Batman Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Really? Don't think either have a cat in hells chance of finishing above this years top four. If he goes now, it will only be for the money. I remember when we cleaned up in league 1. Those players never joined us for the laugh of it
Shance Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 But Liverpool have a better chance than us, and in the absence of an offer from a CL club he may see Liverpool as the best option. Then he'd been in it soley for the cash. Simple as.
Batman Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Then he'd been in it soley for the cash. Simple as. isnt that what a vast majority of players move for? even the ones that come to saints?
DT Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Clyne and Schneiderlin off. Have been resigned to this for months. Just a question of how much money we get for them. And can we please buy a goalkeeper? Please? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Smirking_Saint Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Then he'd been in it soley for the cash. Simple as. Well... Cash and a more prestigious club that has a better chance of consistantly finishing in a top 6 position
doddisalegend Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Well... Cash and a more prestigious club that has a better chance of consistantly finishing in a top 6 position No one is going to Liverpool for the glory they've been in decline for years, I really don't believe any player bases his transfer on a clubs history. Only a few weeks ago Clyne was talking about regular CL football you wouldn't go to Liverpool for that. I'd never suggest we were a big/better club than Liverpool but I still reckon Clyne is good enough to play for a better club than Liverpool. Shame his agent ****ed up the man U transfer for him.
rallyboy Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Call me old school but seeing pix of Clyne hanging out in London night clubs with Arsenal and Aston Villa players, some displaying their homemade tats plus lack of taste and professionalism, just made me think one thing - sell him. As for Villa, if my team had just scraped league safety and been destroyed in a cup final, would I want to see them out partying with the winners?....
cambsaint Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 Don't see Liverpool or Spurs or Saints for that matter breaking in to the top four for many years. Realistically the top four are pretty much sewn up unless a mega-rich buyer comes in who can within the confines of FFP upset the status quo. This means that any player with serious interest in playing CL football has to get into the top four-v difficult or go to Europe. Europe wouldn't be a problem for Schneiderlin but Clyne's background suggests he may find it difficult to settle abroad ( Bale is reportedly finding learning Spanish v difficult).

Far from being old school, I think hostility to players who socialise with people from other clubs has grown with social media.

They are a massive club with global appeal and are in a different league to us financially! I'd like to see the same people argue that Stoke/Swansea as just as big as Liverpool Spurs pretty much tick all those boxes but that didn't stop Morgan pretty much ruling out a move to them. Fans car about prestige and history, most players care about trophies, cash and the level of football they are playing be it playing in a better league or the champions league where they get to 'step up' and in turn earn more cash and a better chance of trophies plus more chance of international recognition. The 'big club' thing isn't exactly working for Sterling now is it? Cash + Champions league/trophies is what most players playing in the premier league will move clubs for. If someone moves to Liverpool now, if they do well they will only move to Utd, City Chelsea, Barca, Real Madrid etc later because those clubs currently and in the next 4-5 years are more likely trophy winners and play more regularly champions league and can pay more wages. So whatever Liverpool may think about them being big, a move from us currently to Liverpool is only a small move up, it;s mainly a move sideways in terms of money, trophy and champions league potential.
Saint Charlie Posted 31 May, 2015 Posted 31 May, 2015 http://www.oneworldsports.com/stories/manchester-united-still-after-nathaniel-clyne United still keen according to a Sunday Times journo...maybe Liverpool have done us a favour.

sydneysaint17 Posted 1 June, 2015 Posted 1 June, 2015 Moving to Liverpool is miles from a sideways move To be fair, they were considerably better than us last season...
S-Clarke Posted 1 June, 2015 Posted 1 June, 2015 I don't think people are saying that Liverpool is a sideways move in terms of a club, they are historically a massive global football club - but right now at this moment in time on the football side, he could do a hell of a lot better - in my opinion. Who knows how long Rogers will last for a start. They'll go into next season without Sturidge, Sterling (probably) and Gerrard. Given their recruitment over the last 3 seasons has been nothing short of shambolic, I don't think anyone can be sure that they'll do well to replace those. It's a bit of a gamble football wise, but if he's the sort of guy that gets taken aback by $$$$ then that could well be the option. If I was Clyne, I'd take the contract offered by the club - with a release fee. Carry on your progression at a stable environment, continue playing for England, and get a taster of European competition. In a years or so time, he will have much bigger suitors than Liverpool. (Just my 2 cents)
Donatello Posted 1 June, 2015 Posted 1 June, 2015 To be fair, they were considerably better than us last season... How have you worked that out?
S-Clarke Posted 1 June, 2015 Posted 1 June, 2015 How have you worked that out? I 'think' he was being sarcastic, but you can never tell on here! It would help if they added a little wink or something...
sadoldgit Posted 1 June, 2015 Posted 1 June, 2015 If Clyne intended signing for us then he probably would have done so by now, Saints have publicly said he had a ten day deadline, which I think expired before the last match of the season, yet we are still 'hopeful' etc. Nothing wrong with that but realistically I think he has one foot out of the door, and will only sign for us if his dream move doesn't materialise. Koeman says that the delay is down to Clyne changing his agent and that he expects him to sign this week. I'll guess we shall see!
S-Clarke Posted 1 June, 2015 Posted 1 June, 2015 Koeman says that the delay is down to Clyne changing his agent and that he expects him to sign this week. I'll guess we shall see! That was last week. I think he had a change of heart after Utd seemingly backed away, the club then got optimistic and everything seemed in order. Then Liverpool came knocking and it's thrown it all up in the air again. I do have a feeling though that if he was going to sign, he'd have done it by now. The club were very, very confident (Reed and Koeman) so obviously there has been a massive swing over these last 7 days.
Donatello Posted 1 June, 2015 Posted 1 June, 2015 I 'think' he was being sarcastic, but you can never tell on here! It would help if they added a little wink or something... Haha, that would make sense. Winking should be mandatory
richard Posted 1 June, 2015 Posted 1 June, 2015 I 'think' he was being sarcastic, but you can never tell on here! It would help if they added a little wink or something... I think he meant last season as in the one when they came 2nd.

Saint Charlie Posted 1 June, 2015 Posted 1 June, 2015 Sometimes people overlook the money. If you were Clyne and someone was going to double what Saints can offer (and are also a traditionally better team) then its quite foolish in many ways to say no. Which is why very, very few do say no.

Also at the end of a career which only lasts about 15 years it's what you have to show for it that counts. No-one is going to remember getting beaten 1-0 at some Ukranian minnow in the play-offs for the Europa League. Trophies, titles and caps are all that count when you sum it up at the end. Who can remember who played for us in Bucharest 10 years ago, no doubt a few can but at Wembley in 1976, well even those who weren't there know what the side was.
