david in sweden Posted 26 May, 2015 Posted 26 May, 2015 I think the statements (from both sides) are just examples of "political correctness". If Clyne goes to Man.U....it'd his best career move, and he'll get a millionaires contract for 4-5 years. Those chances don't come twice, and we'll never get a better £ price. The ..." were still talking" ..comment sounds similar to Les' comments prior to Pochettino's departure last year, and well... at least he's tried his best to keep him. If Arsenal lose the Cup Final, and we don't qualify for EL, then Clyne won't be the only disappointed player....and he will surely go.
Saint Charlie Posted 26 May, 2015 Posted 26 May, 2015 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/transfers/11630528/Manchester-United-place-Dani-Alves-on-transfer-shortlist.html
david in sweden Posted 26 May, 2015 Posted 26 May, 2015 Usually about 3 days before a flurry of inbound players to complete the playing squad. ...that rarely happens so early, but it just might this year. I think Les, Ronald and the Black Box have probably identified their targets long since. Usually by July 1st the doomsayers are tearing their hair out and changing their underwear three times a day....and predicting relegation.
The9 Posted 26 May, 2015 Posted 26 May, 2015 Question is, do we plan for a Europa League campaign? We'll know on Saturday 30th May if we're in Europa 3rd Qualifying Round, but that could only be two matches in late July and early August. In early August we'll only know if we're in the Europa League Play-Off round, and we won't know if we're into the Group Stages until August 27th, which is only a few days before the transfer window closes. Unless we're completely out of Europe (which might lead to a couple of departures anyway) we're going to have to decide how to do our business based on where we HAVE to strengthen, and where we may need additional depth if we end up playing an extra load of games (would be 10 extra before Xmas if we make the group stages, plus travel stresses and impact on training, etc.). It would be an extra 19 matches if we went all the way to the Final.

david in sweden Posted 27 May, 2015 Posted 27 May, 2015 Personally, I don't think the Europa League thing really has much impact on the Clyne situation - it's more about whether Man Utd are serious about making an offer for him or not. and I think you're probably right in the long run. We can get £15-perhaps £20 million for Clyne now, because next summer he walks for £0... the real pressure is surely on MU, (or some club like them), who can't afford to go another season without some sort of Euro prize / recognition.... European success (even if they didn't actually win CL).....was the bread of butter of MU's success under Fergie....but it's pie in the sky for club likes Saints.
LGTL Posted 27 May, 2015 Posted 27 May, 2015 Clyne will only stay if united end their interest. He'd jump at the chance to go there.

Except that Jenkinson does not fit in at all with how Koeman seems to want his fullbacks to play.
Saint Charlie Posted 27 May, 2015 Posted 27 May, 2015 Clyne will only stay if united end their interest. He'd jump at the chance to go there. Of course. The media reports suggest it has already ended. Whether that is the case, who knows, but those reports did coincide with Koeman being much more positive on the topic than he had been before.
jimmysaint7 Posted 27 May, 2015 Posted 27 May, 2015 Not related to contract but is Clyne in the video of gerrard etc doing the kolo/yay a song that's floating around at the mo?
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 27 May, 2015 Posted 27 May, 2015 Carl Jenkinson? Arsenal's fourth choice right back? No thanks.
Lorne Malvo Posted 27 May, 2015 Posted 27 May, 2015 Carl Jenkinson? Arsenal's fourth choice right back? No thanks. Would be better than Trippier.
BARCELONASAINT Posted 27 May, 2015 Posted 27 May, 2015 for what it is worth this is my view on our possible transfer market activity. IF we qualify for Europe i would not be surprised if our plan was for our existing squad being capable of getting us to the group stages. Get to the group stages and we see some extra faces brought in.....don't qualify and we might lose a couple that will be replaced but nothing else.

EBS1980 Posted 27 May, 2015 Posted 27 May, 2015 Not related to contract but is Clyne in the video of gerrard etc doing the kolo/yay a song that's floating around at the mo? Clyne at the Liverpool end of season event? Doubt it!

IF we qualify for Europe i would not be surprised if our plan was for our existing squad being capable of getting us to the group stages. Get to the group stages and we see some extra faces brought in.....don't qualify and we might lose a couple that will be replaced but nothing else. We "get to the group stages" on August 27, that leaves about 4 days for all the teams we've been sodding about all summer to agree to our terms and put the transfer through. Doesn't sound like a very clever policy to me. I think we already know the likelihood of needing to replace Schneiderlin and Clyne, as well as any others, will already have the shortlists for those players well in negotiation, and then depending on the Cup Final will have plans either for more depth or more quality in permanent signings (or loans to buy), with a bunch of other potential loanees lined up for those last few days just in case of making the Group Stages. The good thing about the last 32 is that you know if you've made it before the January window even opens, and you can sign players before the knockout rounds begin. The bad thing is that a lot of players will be cup-tied by then. Edited 27 May, 2015 by The9
Shance Posted 27 May, 2015 Posted 27 May, 2015 Would be better than Trippier. I very much disagree with that.

Saint Garrett Posted 28 May, 2015 Author Posted 28 May, 2015 I'd definitely have Jenkinson, he's had a great season at West Ham, still pretty young and English. If we can sell Clyne for 20m and sign Jenkinson for 10, I'd be absolutely delighted - he's better than Chambers.

If we can sell Clyne for 20m and sign Jenkinson for 10, I'd be absolutely delighted - he's better than Chambers. I wouldn't be! Jenkinson did ok, but nothing special. He'd be a major downgrade in my book, and spending 50% of the Clyne fee on him would be criminal in my opinion. Personally, I think his comments today pretty much confirm he's staying - just waiting for the pen to paper confirmation now.
Andy Durman Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 'Why can't we be a top team?' I like the use of the word we. It's a powerful word.

Bucks Saint Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 Do you reckon Woy will let Clyne out of training to sign his new deal, if its with us rather than a move to a Big club? Hmmm
Lord Duckhunter Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 I hope Jenkinson signs as my daughter knows a member of his close family,I could become an itk.
Saint IQ Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 Waiting to see if Arsenal beat Villa I reckon otherwise he'd have signed already, maybe he thinks Europa league is a good next step for him in his career but if we don't get into europe he will need to move on to progress his career and play in european competition
Saint IQ Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 Or maybe if we get into Europe we can afford to pay him more, who knows
Dig Dig Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 Or maybe if we get into Europe we can afford to pay him more, who knows It really wouldn't make much difference, financially or otherwise. The only factors at play here are which clubs are interested who can offer Champions League football and how much money can they pay him.
Pat from Poole Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 Seem to recall there were rumours recently about us signing Micah Richards, but I would have thought his wage demands would be above what we'd want to pay. Plus he seems to be injury-prone.

Plus he seems to be injury-prone. I think if Richards is to move on then he's at a point where he'll have to take a big pay cut. He's not done enough to warrant his high wages.

I don't think Jenkinson's a bad player at all. And I'd trust that if he came, Koeman could straighten any kinks out.
Saint Garrett Posted 28 May, 2015 Author Posted 28 May, 2015 All on frees this year from the french league. Gourcuff would be a good addition IMO, as would Gignac. André Ayew Yoann Gourcuff Andre-Pierre Gignac Kevin Theophile-Catherine Mouez Hassen (KEEPER!!!!!!!!) Jeremy Morel

St Chalet Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 Liverpool have had a bid rejected for Clyne Presume your source is this? @pjoyceexpress: Liverpool make move for right-back Nathaniel Clyne. Southampton reject bid. Improved offer likely.

St Chalet Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 £15m and we will sell. The Clyne that we saw in the first half of the season is probably worth that.
S-Clarke Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 I'm sure Lallana is having a nice little chat to him.
Saint Charlie Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 £15m and we will sell. The Clyne that we saw in the first half of the season is probably worth that. In todays inflated market he is worth £20m, the problem is his contract. Still, £9m is a poor offer, regardless of a dip in form he was one of the top 3 PL right backs last season. Also interesting all the papers got this at the same time. Either leaked by Liverpool or Clyne's people.
Saint Charlie Posted 28 May, 2015 Posted 28 May, 2015 Think he can do better than Liveroool. Express Journalist Paul Joyce who is well connected at Liverpool says he wants the move and Saints are waiting for the offer to reach £12m. Sounds like it will happen. Pretty poor even at 12m and would leave us needing two RBs this summer as we only had Toby as cover this season.
