If we only lose Morgan and Toby (who we don't own) then thats a whole lot better than last summer.

New contracts for Jay and Clyne didnt look all that likely a short time ago so great news.

Agree, all things considered, it would be a very good result.

Would assume we also would be looking for RB cover as currently that is just Toby and there isnt anyone in the U21s that plays that position naturally who is near to PL level.

We got quite lucky this year as Clyne rarely missed a game, but with Europa possibly on the horizon we definitely need another proper RB.

Agreed but I know the club rate Stephens highly and he's played there in the past so maybe he'll get a go in cup games.

Fair enough but I hope we take the ups as seriously as we did this year. I want a trophy.

He may do. But is he good enough to play 30 odd PL games in a position that isnt his best?

You need two specialist players for each position, a Yoshida/Stephens is ok for one or two games i.e as a third choice, but not as second.

With a proper no 2 keeper we would already have Europa League wrapped up.

been told clyne is close. toby and morgan will go.

Thanks, K-Billy. Much appreciated, as always.

Can we (I) infer that the situation with Alderweireld isn't concrete? i.e. he was always 'going', because Athletico were never going to accept £6.8m. That is to say, is he still up for grabs on the open-market *fingers crossed* Or are Athletico keeping him regardless of offers? (not that I would expect you to know Athletico's intention, but your source may have a vibe). Alternatively, perhaps he is obtainable, but the transfer fee sought puts him beyond viable target status.

If Swindon make it to the Championship then I suspect we may allow Stephens to continue his development there.

Clyne deal close, couple of options/clauses to agree but apparently everyone wants to do the deal.

Toby all up in the air, nothing concrete from AM although we have put feelers out to make the deal work, but they have all the aces (even if it costs them 2m euros). Toby himself is ok on staying, but at same time if someone else comes in then who knows.

nothing moving on Morgan, mainly because no one has come in for him. Arsenal are cooling, but Spurs now rumoured to be doing something (Champs League, Morgan???). Watch this space.

If he goes to Spurs then he's a traitor.

News on Clyne is great. I'll be gutted if we can't keep Toby but tbh I expected him to go, especially if am sell one of their first XI defenders which they are rumoured to be doing.

On another note, if Morgan goes to spurs then he'll have completely ruined his reputation in southampton. It's already tarnished as it is.

Amazing news on Clyne, I felt this was ''next'' on the list after the comments that started to come out next week.

I think any move for Toby will just linger in the background for a while, but maybe the club just feel they need to go out and replace him rather than wait around for what may be.

Morgan - expected. But to spurs, no - not expected. If that's his only choice, you'd hope he just sticks it out here. Not expecting him to sign a new contract, but going to Spurs would be such a pointless move for him.

Clyne is a strange one. Had it on very good authority that he would jump at the chance of going to Utd - I did read though that they were interested in Dani Alves so maybe their interest in Clyne has cooled. Seems a bit of a turnaround/change of heart for him to stay.

Its Man Utd that have had the change of heart.

At the end of the day our players probably love it at Saints and aren't actively seeking to leave, but if Man Utd give you a concrete offer then you go.

If an offer doesnt materialise then you stay.

Regarding toby, why cant we just renegotiate a higher price with athletico if we offered 12m it would save athletico having to give us the extra 2m ,which in effect would make it worth 14m.

Since we have first dibs here we should be in the driving seat.depends how much we want him i guess?

I just can't see any reason for him to go there other than more money (mind you that's a big reason) but it's not for Morgan to decide is it, it's for the club, and I can't see them wanting to give Poch one of our best players, or Spurs coming up with the right money anyway. If I had to make a guess, I think he could end up at Man City, they need a clear out, prem experience, and home grown players IMO.

Why would he play 30 PL games if Clyne stays? unless he gets a serious injury of course

You answered your own question. Best way to assess a backup is if they suddenly needed to play more often.
