Thats it exactly. Of course playing for Liverpool for more money is attractive, but then he had the chances to go for more money when we were in L1. We had a shot at CL and even though it is clear that we are very light up front, did we buy a striker in the window to bolster our chances? No, we got another loan player. Sorry, it was a total lack of ambition and we are paying for it now. We wouldn't have had a better chance, but we didn't have a go at it. At least we know where we stand in what the previous CEO wanted to what the current one is aiming for. Whicj is fine, as they long as they are honest about it, which they wont be, it will be all this "pushing for the top 4 etc..." bollix, thats what gets me, more than not making the top 4 actually. S-Clarke Posted 23 February, 2015 Share Posted 23 February, 2015 It's so easy to say that now, but this just seems like a pretty feeble reason to try and make themselves look less of a ****. They played our board, MP especially. Our board were naive at the start and I think we were caught a little bit surprised by how it all escalated. We got a handle on it eventually, but by that time all these greedy players sense their opportunities and made the most of it. And how unhealthy was the club if the players are here at the wim of a chairman? I don't like that, I think it creates a very fragile environment as we saw. Chairman come and go, but the club is still here. I think we need to ask who they played for....Southampton or Cortese FC? I have no time for either. They both could have stuck around and been patient, especially as Ronald Koeman was in charge before Lallana had even been sold. I will respect Adam for how he played for us through the leagues, he's one of the main reasons we are here right now. But I don't respect him for how he tried to instigated his move. It showed a lot of disrespect.

Which is what was widely reported at the time. Id say id was a shame that it caused many good players and a good manager to leave but in the end it all worked out for the best. I understood he reasons for leaving, just not his application of him leaving. Perhaps the new board were slow and naive in there early approach to things, and yes at the time I was vocally annoyed but they've sorted themself out and come out IMO smelling of roses. We dont know the state of play early after NCs leaving, so maybe there were reasons for their hesitance

Noodles was talking about the new board, you know, the one that came in last year (2014). Seems quite reasonable to me that at the time when they came in the new board were not able to provide assurances about their future intentions and that they were going to push forward for CL qualification. Where Noodles falls over is that he thinks that was a situation that did not change later. the Board obviously did (later) push on and restated their ambition, but by then it was too late for Poch and Lala who had made their intentions clear based on the lack of assurances when the new board first took over, instead of having the patience to find out what would happen once they had been in place for a while. All that said, I'm really very glad that we made Poch decide about leaving, the upgrade to RK is one of the best things that came out of last years upheaval. Couldn't give a monkeys about Lalla, he showed yesterday that he really is ineffectual, and we used the money we got for him wisely, although his replacements have looked as ineffectual as Lalla yesterday. You only have to look at his tweets and articles from early last summer (May to July) to realise he was reporting on the problems from one side only, the side of the players he had contact with. I expect better from someone on The BBC gravytrain. Are you suggesting that he harboured some personal grudge towards the board? In which case, I think you're overthinking things. I remember the Lallana exchange on Twitter which had two elements - one in which he was factually reporting what he had been told; the other in which he interpreted what he had been told. The latter was balanced by qualifications and 'on the one hand and on the other hands'. If there was bias, that possibly owed more to the close relationship Blackmore had with Lallana, as a local lad and longstanding club servant, not a general position against the club. To the extent journos are asked to stay out of the interpretation game and not play God but instead stick to their sources, it's natural that if only one side is willing to talk, that will be reported more. There was nothing to stop the club talking to Blackmore and am sure he would have welcomed it. Another scoop can only be good for the gravytrain. The club decided to play its cards close to its chest and that was its prerogative. But let's not pretend it maintained a wall of silence. In this regard, perhaps the club's media strategy could have been handled better. Instead of leaking stories to selected national papers about transfer warchests and alike, perhaps it should have worked more closely with Blackmore and other local journos. He might not have the the national reach or the same bang for the buck, but neither are we a national club; and it seems that voices like his are the starting point for a lot of Saints supporters news. He's got a point. The board have set the budget for us to be 7th-10th place club it's just that Koeman has radically over-achieved this season. Long-term we will be around that position. In order for us to challenge the big boys long term we would need owner investment as had had to happen at Man City. Our owner wants us to be self-sufficient which is her prerogative but we won't be able to compete with those teams like this, een with FFP. As for Lallana, ineffectual yesterday yes, but you wouldn't have him back in our team? You're like somebody with a bad itch that needs to be scratched every so often. Yours is the urge to have a good go at the board regularly over something that is quite intangible if not expressed publicly, their ambition. This is despite their appointment of a top-class manager and the expenditure of a substantial proportion of the monies received from the sale of those five players in the Summer. But whatever opinion you express on this subject is bound to be coloured by your abysmally poor record during that Summer of discontent, when you were one of the the chief rabble-rousers believing that Katharina was in the process of dismantling the club to recoup her investment in it. I would have thought that after that, you would have been a bit more circumspect about your opinions, but apparently that was short lived. Yes, whatever happens it has been a very good season, but we didnt push for it. We didn't push for it? So we spent much of the season up to now within the top four places purely by chance, is that it? How lucky we have been, eh? Wes Tender Posted 23 February, 2015 Share Posted 23 February, 2015 Football players in wanting to go to bigger club and earn more money shocker. The point was that despite the claims from those players that they left because they weren't given assurances about the club's ambitions, the truth is far more likely that they left purely because of the money and glory and that the thing about the ambition or lack of, was just a front to make them look less than greedy mercenaries. I disagree with your assertion that we have somehow fluked this season and that if we wish to gain a top four place in the future, it will take investment a la Man City to achieve it. We could yet end the season there without that sort of investment at the moment and provided that we can continue producing star players on the academy conveyor belt and we retain a manager of Koeman's calibre, a lot of the financial outlay to stay there will be mitigated

Sorry if you and others disagree, would it be a better place if every thread was just a load of head nodding? I'm pretty sure that you made considerably more than one comment damning the board during the Summer situation. You put the failure to sign a striker in the loan window down to a lack of ambition, without any knowledge of the background thinking behind the decision. As others have asked, who was available and at what price? And then of course, a loan is a much better proposition anyway, as it gives the club a chance to assess their abilities and also the situation with Rodriguez becoming available later might have rendered one or the other of them surplus to requirements. It could be argued that the addition of Mane, Elio and Djuricic, plus the return of Long and Rodriguez, Gallagher, gave us enough ammunition up front and that the service provided by one or more of them would assist Pelle to regain his touch in front of goal. The point remains, that it is ridiculous to accuse the board of lacking ambition when they have appointed a manager of Koeman's calibre and spent that money from the the sale of those players in the summer on generally very able replacements. Tom & Gerry Posted 23 February, 2015 Share Posted 23 February, 2015 We are not Man City, Man U, Chelsea or even Arsenal, Liverpool or Spurs. We never can be and probably never will. That has nothing to do with ambition it is just reality. The fact that we are trying to break in to that group our own way makes us far more interesting and worth supporting. It means that players who want to maximize their income and have more chance of winning things will always want to leave if coveted by the above mentioned clubs. It takes skill and patience to replace them. The personnel of any team will be broadly the same for only 1 season. Get used to it and get over it. Bloody Pompey's fault - if it wasn't for them we could carry crowds of 60,000 with queues for the last match day ticket! Basterds!!!
