Saint-Armstrong Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 @henrywinter: Koeman said Sadio Mane started on bench because he was “25-30 minutes late” for #saintsfc pre-match meal. “I can’t accept that.” Thoughts? Rules are the rules, I guess - Koeman seems very disciplined, and rightly so.
Wade Garrett Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 The manager should always be backed in matters of discipline. Mane was unprofessional, and was punished. Unfortunately, the paying public were punished as well.
Roger Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Pathetic by mane. Footballers don't have to do much and they get paid loads.
Whitey Grandad Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Depends what his excuse was imo There is no excuse.
CityRanger Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Right decision one hundred percent. Incredibly disappointing as Mane s goals have been so important lately. That would have disrupted tactical plans too.
simo Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 There is no excuse. Of course there is not saying I disagree with what Ron did far from it but I don't think we should chastise mane too much
LGTL Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Need rules otherwise next week what's stopping 5 of them turning up 30 minutes late. Right call.
vince Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 It's fair enough, but I'd rather the punishment was turn up and "help" train the U8 academy kids for a week, rather than be dropped!!! Pointless fining them, money means nothing and detrimenatal to the seniors team performance today to have to bench him.
beatlesaint Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Pathetic by mane. Footballers don't have to do much and they get paid loads. Exactly. Wonder if he bothered to phone up and say he was running late ? 4.15 kick off, he only had all bloody day to get there didn't he
Whitey Grandad Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Exactly. Wonder if he bothered to phone up and say he was running late ? 4.15 kick off, he only had all bloody day to get there didn't he Over 30,000 others managed to get there on time.
Downthe36 Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Where would we be if we didn't have enough rules - France. Where would we be if we had too many rules - Germany. I think Koeman has got this about right, not dropping him from starting lineup would set a poor example.
saintant Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Crazy decision to punish him by putting him on the bench and weakening our starting line-up. Fine him by all means and warn him that if it happens again he'll be dropped but let's not weaken our own team to the benefit of the opposition for what was presumably a first offence. It's tough enough without penalising ourselves. Could have been dealt with more sensibly without resorting to handing an advantage to Liverpool.

Agree with you He was late for pre match dinner not for the warm up or game I have great respect for the manager but think a fine would be more appropriate .You don't cut your nose off to spite you're face.

It's tough enough without penalising ourselves. Could have been dealt with more sensibly without resorting to handing an advantage to Liverpool. Only in the short term. Koeman played at Barcelona, I'm sure he understands the benefit of good discipline. Mane scored a couple of goals and thought himself invincible. It's the right thing to do
Dr Who? Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Wow, that is a big call in a big game and shows balls. Anyone does not fancy playing, they know what to do now! In football and ALL team sports, you have to be just that, a team.

Disagree with you our team is built on discipline, be it going forward and defending, things that require attention to detail and commitment, if the fool can't meet a defined time to get to the stadium the same time every week I might add then he deserves to be dropped to send a message to the wider team. Discipline for the season is more important than the team
Saint_clark Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 If you're gonna play him out wide I'd rather he stayed on the bench. We should know by now that he is ineffective out wide, and excellent through the middle.
Saint_clark Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 There is no excuse. Traffic? A sick child? Had to go back for his boots?
shurlock Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Traffic? A sick child? Had to go back for his boots? Pushed off the bus?
Dig Dig Posted 22 February, 2015 Posted 22 February, 2015 Pushed off the bus? I don't think it was a racist incident though.
the saint in winchester Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 If any of you are late at work tomorrow, should you be punished? Discuss.
Saint_clark Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 If any of you are late at work tomorrow, should you be punished? Discuss. Probably, but I doubt I'd be sent home and not made to work as punishment as that would affect the company more than me...
Whitey Grandad Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 Traffic? A sick child? Had to go back for his boots? Probably getting his hair tinted.
doddisalegend Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 Probably, but I doubt I'd be sent home and not made to work as punishment as that would affect the company more than me... TBH if that was the punishment I'd probably make an effort to be late:p....difference being I tolerate my job and Mane, I guess, ****ing loves his job. I remember saints making a video on Koeman's first training session. Kelvin was interviewed and mentioned he had turned up late and the new boss was not impressed so I think Koeman laid out his expectations early. Saints success this season is built on hard work and team work for that you need rules. Koeman made the right call I'd say.
alpine_saint Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 This is very bad news. It seems his Red Bull Salzburg behaviour is re-emerging. He wasd a hero there with a high scoring rate, then his discipline went.
sussexsaint Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 This is very bad news. It seems his Red Bull Salzburg behaviour is re-emerging. He wasd a hero there with a high scoring rate, then his discipline went. which is why it needs to be nipped in the bud and a strong line drawn
sadoldgit Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 Traffic? A sick child? Had to go back for his boots? The dog ate his homework. Professional footballers don't have too much to worry about off the pitch. Surely getting to a game on time is quite high on the agenda. Fair play to RK.
Whitey Grandad Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 1pm he should have been there, according to today's paper.

Surely getting to a game on time is quite high on the agenda. Fair play to RK. Christ, what a backwards view. Ask robert enke or gary speed what they have to worry about off the pitch. They don't just get stored in a cupboard till game day you know, they're still human beings with lives, relationships and emotions. This is very bad news. It seems his Red Bull Salzburg behaviour is re-emerging. He wasd a hero there with a high scoring rate, then his discipline went. what a huge overreaction to someone simply being late.
S-Clarke Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 He was late, the club dealt with it, he still played a part. End of story.
Andy Durman Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 Without rules we have anarchy. There can be no exception.
CB Saint Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 It is not just about this incident in isolation - it is a wider message to the club as a whole. Ron obviously has certain boundaries that he will not tolerate being pushed and lateness is one of them. There is no point in having those boundaries if you don't have the conviction to back them up - Ron obviously does. Footballers live to play in the big games - taking that away from them is far more effective that a £20k fine. I also believe that stopping players playing football is a theme that runs right through the club to the juniors - mess about and you can watch the next game. If we are willing to drop one of our top players for a massive game then there is no one in the club who is in any doubt what will happen if they don't toe the line - that can only be positive.
Foxstone Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 RonKo was 100% correct... Message to anyone in the squad, play by the rules set out by the management or be punished - No room for sentiment here.
Saint Billy Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 Disagree with you our team is built on discipline, be it going forward and defending, things that require attention to detail and commitment, if the fool can't meet a defined time to get to the stadium the same time every week I might add then he deserves to be dropped to send a message to the wider team. Discipline for the season is more important than the team I'm sure it would hurt more losing a weeks wage than not starting the game.
Mowgli Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 Over 30,000 others managed to get there on time. If that's the benchmark then he is redeemed. He stayed till the end of the game.
VectisSaint Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 I'm sure it would hurt more losing a weeks wage than not starting the game. Ron was 100% correct to take action, but I feel he was 100% wrong in the action he took. He should have taken this back to the training ground AND fined him. Dirty washing should be dealt with behind closed doors and so that it does not affect that team and the plans that were in place.
Clunge Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 The fact Mane was punished suggests he was at fault, it would be harsh to punish him if the situation was out of his control. Lesson learnt, hopefully over and done with.
a1ex2001 Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 He was late, the club dealt with it, he still played a part. End of story. Totally, Mane has made a mistake Koeman has enforced his rules and now everyone needs to move on. Mane will be an important part of the team for the rest of the season we still have a chance of achieving greatness this season!
Charlie Wayman Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 I don't think it was a racist incident though. but this is surely?
Matthew Le God Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 If Fraser Forster had been 10 minutes late would Koeman really drop him for Kelvin Davis?
Window Cleaner Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 If Fraser Forster had been 10 minutes late would Koeman really drop him for Kelvin Davis? Good question really, you'd have to think that the same rules apply to them all if there absolutely has to be this sort of reaction to a rule in the first place.
CB Saint Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 If Fraser Forster had been 10 minutes late would Koeman really drop him for Kelvin Davis? I think he would have - one thing Koeman strikes me as, is even handed
Andy Durman Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 Knowing Koeman Yes he would drop Forster for Kelvin.
Professor Posted 23 February, 2015 Posted 23 February, 2015 This is almost certainly not just a disciplinary issue. The pre-match meal is not a social occasion, it is part of the team's preparation on medical advice as to when the last food should be consumed prior to a game. By arriving late, Mané probably disrupted the plan and may have been regarded as unready to play from the start.

Perhaps he didn't fancy what was for lunch eh, when it's tripes and stuff in the canteen I give it a miss as well. Thje game was at a strange time, some players just don't want to eat before games, it should be a personal decision as it was before.
