Just wanna mention how class this player is! He really has come on this season, and today he was brilliant. I see in the other thread on best starting 11 I see people are dropping him already? Sorry but he's in my 1st 11. He is also incrediblely good in the air. What's your thoughts ?

He was certainly a class act today and has improved under Koeman no doubt.. I would return to 352 with Fonte, Yoshida and Alderwiereld plus the wing backs.. we also score goals with that approach.

This is true. Somebody up top along side Pelle could be just what the doctor ordered.

Absolutely agree. Was saying the same to my lad on the way home.

He will never let you down and always shows his qualities and calmness in a sea of surging water.

Next step: Southampton FC to take advantage of the legacy he has created the club in Japan.

Absolutely agree. His progress is startling, and we should remember he is a good few years younger than Fonte and look how good he has become.

A proper old fashioned pro, hard as nails

Yoshida has been amazing and had we played Gardos today and given Yoshida more freedom to get forward, I am certain we would not have lost. I am mocked, but at this moment in time, Yoshida would have done far better than Pelle leading the line. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!!!

I think you'll find the reason for the mocking is right there in that post ART.

Hold my hands up, four months ago I along with other criticized him heavily.

He really has stepped up and pushed on.

Me too. I thought he was awful and to be fair he used to make a lot of errors! This season he has not only cut out the errors but has become much more dominant and no longer hides or backs off. I wonder if it is RK who has changed his game or has he taken several seasons to adapt/develop?

Posted

I think we forget how (relatively) young he is. He is only 26 and has his best years as a centre back ahead of him.

Not surprised he was offered a new contract.

A couple of changes I've noticed in Yoshida's game these days - his passing and distribution skills have improved markedly and he also seems more confident to burst forward with the ball looking to launch an attack.

Posted

He's been ridiculously good this season, and good on him. Wonder if Koeman has taught him a lot? Would make sense.

He occasionally still has the odd "come on, he's not a footballer!!!!" moment, but overall he has been class.

Agree with others. He's really stepped up this year, moreso than I thought he would have been capable of. So fair play.

If the Japan National Team an use him in a strike role, why can't we give it a go. In present times we've nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I hold my hands up, I've slated him in the past, pointing to some woeful distribution and a lack of physicality (especially in the air) but he has played really well recently, getting tighter and making the ball his. His passing has also been much better too. Him and Fonte were excellent yesterday, keeping us in the game IMO. Their positional play and reading of the game was first class. Decent centre backs are hard to find, so if we can pin Toby down to a contract we are set for a few years, giving us a great platform for the rest of the team to keep improving.

Anyone else think he could be used up top as striker for us? I think he would look decent up there, and would give Pelle a much needed break.

I think all of our defenders have improved immensly this season. It must have something to do with being coached on a daily basis by arguably the best defender there has ever been. Koeman will have even been able to make Jos look good.

Posted

Among other highlights he beat Sterling in a one on one foot race yesterday then calmly laid it back to Forster. We should keep our admiration quite though otherwise that ***t Rodgers will be all over him.

did that actually happen?!

He had an opportunity to shoot in the second half and fluffed it big time.

I am with you there Monk. I used to groan when I saw his name on the teamsheet but fair play to the guy, he has really stepped up. It is nice to be proved wrong about a player!!!

He was so much better than Lovren and I get the feeling he wants to be here or why would he sign such a long contract? Maybe He recognises RK as a great defender to learn from, don't know what he would learn from that Lpool manager, did he ever play the game?

We don't. He has only ever played as a centrally positioned defender for the NT.

It was in the World Cup, Glasgow, don't you remember? They were chasing a game + they threw Yoshida up front. It was amazing! The single greatest striking performance I have ever been privileged to witness. Game finished 0-0 IIRC

If we are going to do weird things, I vote for trying Schneiderlin as a striker. If it works, it will increase his sale price in the summer.

He's a decent player and he's been good this season but still not first choice for a top 8 club. Great to have around, reliable player but we will need to sign better if Tony underwood doesn't stay.
