Qualifying for Europa

So if Utd/Arsenal v Liverpool is the FA cup final and they both are in the UCL then the Europa spot goes to the league. So if Chelsea win the league cup does that mean 7th can qualify in Europa? As all 3 positions would go to 5th 6th and 7th?

If top 4 teams win both cups then the EL places go to 5/6/7th.

The losing FA Cup finalist is irrelevant as they don't qualify anymore.

It has always been about the top 6 and for me. Either Spurs or Man U need to finish below us to manage this.

Man City

Chelsea

Arsenal

Liverpool

Then 2 of 3 including us, Spurs and Man U.

It is no disgrace to come up short. He have been great all season, but we are clearly running out of legs/sharpness in front of goal. This is all it takes, to be a little bit off the pace and that extra edge in front of goal, has gone. This is what is happening to us currently.

I think we will qualify for Europa almost certainly. I think there is a high liklihood of the two cup places going to the league (so down to 7th which'll be fine for us) - and then also perhaps Liverpool and/or tottenham winning the Europa league and not getting top 4 and so another Europa space to the league (as Europa gets champions league place this year)

I think we need another season to get ready for the Europa league anyway.

Only if we get knocked out of both cups at the first time of asking. We need at least one, if not two, full seasons playing the absolute minimum number of games possible to avoid burnout. Then, and only then will we be ready to think about being ready for Europe maybe in three seasons after that.

I think with Chelsea an Spurs in the League cup final 6th place gets Europa and if ManUtd, Arsenal or Liverpool win the FA Cup 7th place gets it. Though no one seems to know for sure.

God knows what will happen in Chelsea win the Champions League and Spurs the Europa as well.

That's pretty much it.

But Liverpool and Spurs could win the two cups and finish 7th and 8th which could mean we finish sixth and get nothing. Unlikely though.

The next 12 games are more important than the last 3. We're still only one point off 4th and are above Liverpool and Tottenham.

This.

The two above mentioned teams are given more chance of a European place than Saints by the media and a section of our own fans yet we are above them on merit. It's how Koeman and the team around him deal with this apparent slump in form and raise the team for the run in. There are goals in the team, we are too afraid to go for them at the moment for whatever reason.

All true. If you want to remain optimistic, and I do, this is where we need to focus.

12 matches left.. only 3 of those are Top 9 clubs (Chelsea, Tottenham and Man City)

So, for the sake of argument, win the games you are supposed to win! ---- win 9 | lose 3 : 27 points + 46 points = 73 points at the end of season.

with a healthy defense/midfield it is achievable.

forces Tottenham to get 30 points out of as possible 36 points

(they play 4 teams in the top 9, have Europa and a League Cup title match to play)

forces Liverpool to get 29 points out of a possible 36 points

(they play 5 teams in the top 9, have Europa and FA Cup matches to play)

forces Manu to get 25 points out of a possible 36 points

(they play 5 teams in the top 9, have FA Cup matches to play)

It's a tall task, but that it what it is going to have to take. We have the easiest path compared to our competitors for the 4th spot.

One game at a time - beat the team in front of you and the rest takes care of itself.

yeah yeah, you all can have some of what I am smoking.

Well having read that let's hope the top 4 win both cups and we can get 7th for Europa League.....

Thanks CB, let me take it from here.

If we lose to Arsenal in the FA Cup final this season we will qualify for Europa, provided Arsenal have qualified for the CL.

:toppa:

I, for one, cannot wait for the 2015-16 Europa League campaign to get started in August 2016. How about you?

Some form of European qualification is a must IMO, I fear that failure to do so may result in another summer exodus.

Europa League will be meaningless for keeping players. If Man U come in for Clyne do you really think it will enter his mind to stay as we are going to be playing the likes of FC Sherrif on a Thursday evening?

There was an article on this in Saturday's guardian - which I can't find online. In short - if Liverpool or Spurs finish in the top 4 and win the Europa League then the top five qualify for the CL with 6th and 7th qualifying for Europa league.

Are you sure? I thought the only way to get 5 CL spots was for a PL winner of Europa (or the CL) to finish outside the top 4?

We'll have to ask CB Fry to clarify.

The original document with helpful pictures is here (ignore the first two pages, which are in Spanish - unless you can read Spanish of course).

For the lolz, it is also VERY VERY clear about which season it is that the Europa League winners qualify for the Champions League. It's on Page 4, I won't spoil it here. :)

Well, this can't happen any more...
