Man City want Toby

Just paper talk, can't believe people take these stories so seriously

Even if this specific story is just made up paper talk, I still imagine the many scouts, managers and interested bods out there would have to be blind not to have recognised Toby's outstanding season, his tenuous contractual situation and him not being averse to move away from Spain.

Apparently if Atletico want to sell him to a club other than ours then they can just pay us £1.5m to break the clause. So all the other club would have to do is offer more than £6.8m and then cover the additional £1.5m fee and it would make financial sense for them to sell to that club.

Yeah, it's offers over £8.3M. If the offer is above that, then Atletico will make money. Our option is to offer within £1.5M of any other offer. Then there is the wages issue. If Citeh offer him £80k a week, can we match that? Starting to look harder for us to win this battle.

What would the £1.5m cover? The loan fee we'd have paid for him this season maybe? We've still got a good deal out of it, but gutting to lose such a class player.

Why don't fans use his surname?

1.5 is the money they would have to pay us to sell him to someone else. Hence we would only have to bid within that amount of another buyer. As for the surname, I assume because it is hard to spell and say. I have to look it up each time and I never say it--but then I don't really discuss Southampton with anyone in my local town.

Bottom line is that he isn't our player and belongs to Athletico Madrid.

Like everybody else I think he is probably the most accomplished and highest quality player I have ever seen playing for Saints.

Way way too good for us at the moment and he deserves to play at the very highest level. Saints aren't there yet but we are getting close.

Toby's a Saint for another 13 games so lets just enjoy him why we have him and wish him well when he goes.

I think its a shame that Jack Stephens, an obvious understudy hasn't been able to train with him. I've high hopes of that lad and maybe we'll see him next year starting to fulfil his promise.

As others have pointed out Yoshida and Gardos are playing well so we don't exactly have a crisis at the back.

Wouldn't be wonderful if he stayed though....

I hope that he decides the best thing for him would be to stay here. He obviously has a connection with Koeman and the Lovren saga has proved that moving to a big club and doubling your wages may not be the best idea in the world if you are not able to hold down a place in the team. This has already happened to him at Madrid.

He left AM because he wants to play every week - he will not get that if he moves to London or Manchester, that is a huge factor in his decision, if indeed it is his at all. I would be amazed if AM will not pay our option off, if they can actually do that, as he must be worth £30M to Liverpool or Manure.

Agree with every word of this; you feel as though TA will be off in the summer - maybe it will be someone like Vlaar comong in but let's hope young Jack Stephens gets his chance to show up in the first team squad.

Yeah, I know that, was just thinking in effect if we do lose him, we've had a class player for a season without having to pay any transfer or loan fee for him; still a really good deal for us, even if it won't feel like that if we lose him.

Indeed. We're probably stretching to pay him as it is.

He is reported to be on around 70k, I wouldnt expect our top earners to be a million miles from that TBH, its about average for a good player in the prem.

This all goes out of the window with City however, they could easily fork out 100k and offer trophies. Ge wont be a bench warmer either. Dimechellis won't go on forwever and a back four including Toby and Kompany will be formidable
