Lallana's Left Peg Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Was always likely to happen. Not sure if he'd be first choice though, despite Mangala looking like someone who has his limbs controlled by a separate brain at times.
CityRanger Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Something like this is going to happen. He's too good for 6.8 million!
James Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Until he signs somewhere else I still have hope. He'd only be a squad player at City and he didn't enjoy that at Atletico. If we finish in the CL places we'll sign him IMO.
Saint_Ash Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 The only way he'll stay with us is if we achieve Champs League football next season and even then it would be difficult. Great player and pleased he played a part in a great season this year.

angelman Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Here we go again. The ridiculous position that football finds itself in, including ourselves in the pecking order. nta786 Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 No shock, Toby is far too good for us. However, me saying that is a 'Dell-sized Mentality' eh If we get CL, I can see him wanting to stay with us- though Athletico will do what's best for them, rather than what Toby wants. scorchio21 Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Amazed at people saying he wouldn't be first choice at Man City, if their manager has half a brain he'd be straight in alongside Kompany, especially with the Belgian connection. angelman Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 we are near the very top in England. not an issue really We're very far from the top in England. Closer than most other clubs, but still very far from the top. It may not be an issue for you, but it is for me.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Can we buy him for 6m and then sell him on for 28m the following week? Apparently if Atletico want to sell him to a club other than ours then they can just pay us £1.5m to break the clause. So all the other club would have to do is offer more than £6.8m and then cover the additional £1.5m fee and it would make financial sense for them to sell to that club. Patrick Bateman Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Big boys come knocking and that'll be that. The lad really is top draw. Yup. One of the highest quality players I have seen at Saints, would love to see him for more than a season, but after the impact he had, I would be surprised to see him here in the summer. ericofarabia Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Couldn't we simply send them Academy Player Jason McCarthy back to AM and keep Toby. Sure they would't spot the difference!!
ericb Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Absolutely no surprise at all i think all but the most deluded saints fans probably realised there would be bigger fish than ourselves going for him. Personally i'm just glad we got one great season out of him and he helps us get Europe. A class player who really should be playing right at the top of the game and extremely unlikely to "do a Lovern" in my opinion as his attitude seems to match his ability. Remember him coming up to the fans at Sheff Utd and applauding us and throwing his shirt into the crowd. He'd only come on as a sub and tried harder than anyone to turn the game around. Think he really fancied a trip to Wembley. Against Ipswich, unused sub but was warming up on the touchline throughout the match. Think he covered more miles than most of the players on the pitch!! A true model professional, would love to keep him - it would be like Saints winning the lottery if that happened!! If, and that's a BIG if, we get a CL place but AM still take the buy back clause, we can still enter the bidding race 1.5 mill in credit!! I wonder how much leverage the player has in the way things turn out in all of this?
corky morris Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Little we can do about it. They can at least double his salary. Its the downside to some of these loans. He is twice the player Lovren is!!!
Unbelievable Jeff Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Unsurprising. I'm sure he's on 70k per week at Atletico as well, so he'd have to take a pay cut anyway to join. As an aside, and say it quietly, but Maya has been pretty good this season when asked to step up.

um pahars Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 From a few games in I was thinking this fella will be great for a year, as on this form over a season he is not going to be short of suitors (home and abroad). Of course we should be moving heaven and earth to get him to stay, but I also reckon plan B,C,D & E are already in effect looking for a replacement!! Stepgar Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 WE have first refusal on the deal. Man City can not come with a bid unless we we say we dont want him. Cabrone Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 TBH we've been fortunate just to have had the services of such a quality player over a season, he was playing in the champs league final not too long ago so it was a real coup to land him. I'd love him to stay but reality means he'll go to one of the big boys.

Junior Mullet Posted 20 February, 2015 Share Posted 20 February, 2015 Even if he does go elsewhere, the club will have done outstandingly well to have got him in for a season. And I trust they'll find a quality replacement in the Summer. I just wonder how much of an impact his injuries will have on the chance of a big transfer. Charlie Wayman Posted 20 February, 2015 Share Posted 20 February, 2015 He's better than Mangala and Demechelis. Kompany and Toby would be a great pairing. If he doesn't go there he'll end up at another big club, the lad is top class. He was of course already at a top club and only made the bench. Nobody on here it seems has mentioned the Koeman factor in Toby's resurrection as a player, that should not be under-estimated nor the player's own sense of loyalty and belonging dismissed out of hand. Hi might actually like it here and want to stay awhile.
