Until he signs somewhere else I still have hope. He'd only be a squad player at City and he didn't enjoy that at Atletico.

If we finish in the CL places we'll sign him IMO.

The only way he'll stay with us is if we achieve Champs League football next season and even then it would be difficult. Great player and pleased he played a part in a great season this year.

Was always likely to happen. Not sure if he'd be first choice though' date=' despite Mangala looking like someone who has his limbs controlled by a separate brain at times.[/quote']

I think he could easily be first choice with both Mangala and Kompany looking well off the pace...or at least be given a good run of games to see if he is a better option

We should put in a cheeky 7M bid for Kompany if Toby goes there. :p

No shock, Toby is far too good for us. However, me saying that is a 'Dell-sized Mentality' eh ;)

If we get CL, I can see him wanting to stay with us- though Athletico will do what's best for them, rather than what Toby wants.

Amazed at people saying he wouldn't be first choice at Man City, if their manager has half a brain he'd be straight in alongside Kompany, especially with the Belgian connection.

we are near the very top in England. not an issue really

We're very far from the top in England. Closer than most other clubs, but still very far from the top. It may not be an issue for you, but it is for me.

Can we buy him for 6m and then sell him on for 28m the following week?

Apparently if Atletico want to sell him to a club other than ours then they can just pay us £1.5m to break the clause. So all the other club would have to do is offer more than £6.8m and then cover the additional £1.5m fee and it would make financial sense for them to sell to that club.

Big boys come knocking and that'll be that. The lad really is top draw.

Yup. One of the highest quality players I have seen at Saints, would love to see him for more than a season, but after the impact he had, I would be surprised to see him here in the summer.

Absolutely no surprise at all i think all but the most deluded saints fans probably realised there would be bigger fish than ourselves going for him. Personally i'm just glad we got one great season out of him and he helps us get Europe.

A class player who really should be playing right at the top of the game and extremely unlikely to "do a Lovern" in my opinion as his attitude seems to match his ability.

Remember him coming up to the fans at Sheff Utd and applauding us and throwing his shirt into the crowd. He'd only come on as a sub and tried harder than anyone to turn the game around.

Think he really fancied a trip to Wembley.

Against Ipswich, unused sub but was warming up on the touchline throughout the match. Think he covered more miles than most of the players on the pitch!!

A true model professional, would love to keep him - it would be like Saints winning the lottery if that happened!!

If, and that's a BIG if, we get a CL place but AM still take the buy back clause, we can still enter the bidding race 1.5 mill in credit!!

I wonder how much leverage the player has in the way things turn out in all of this?

From a few games in I was thinking this fella will be great for a year, as on this form over a season he is not going to be short of suitors (home and abroad).

Of course we should be moving heaven and earth to get him to stay, but I also reckon plan B,C,D & E are already in effect looking for a replacement!!

Posted
Tbh, he isn't one of our players. Lots of our own players to worry about.

Why is it, the better we get ... the more traumatic the close season gets!!

Only saving grace is that RoKo has placed his cards well and truly on the table - just hope an unturndownable job doesn't crop up in the meantime!!

WE have first refusal on the deal. Man City can not come with a bid unless we we say we dont want him. I am sure there would be a work round i.e Toby doesnt agree terms etc but for now just chill.

He's better than Mangala and Demechelis. Kompany and Toby would be a great pairing. If he doesn't go there he'll end up at another big club, the lad is top class.

Wrong!!

AM have a buy out clause ... 1.5 mill to take him back. What they do thereafter is up to them ... not sure how much say Toby has.

If City come in and offer him more money, CL football every year and title challenges I really can't see him picking him over us. Think I'd probably do likewise and I was him tbh.

AM have a £1.5m clause. We've no chance alas.

TBH we've been fortunate just to have had the services of such a quality player over a season, he was playing in the champs league final not too long ago so it was a real coup to land him.

I'd love him to stay but reality means he'll go to one of the big boys.

Posted

Even if he does go elsewhere, the club will have done outstandingly well to have got him in for a season. And I trust they'll find a quality replacement in the Summer.

I just wonder how much of an impact his injuries will have on the chance of a big transfer.

All of this thread because some newspaper speculation LOL...........hey they are gonna keep doing this

Someone should respond by leaking stories that some of the good players on the big teams want to move to Southampton to get actual first team playing time and point to Ryan Bertrand as an example.

Couldn't we simply send them Academy Player Jason McCarthy back to AM and keep Toby. Sure they would't spot the difference!!

I'm sorry how did anyone miss this brilliant post...

I cannot see any flaws in this plan. Just get McCarthy to sound a little belgian and....bob is your uncle

I think he just looks good behind Wanyama and Schneiderlin and with Fonte next to him. Buy him and then flog him to Man C or Liverpool to partner Lovren for 35m... 8)

He was of course already at a top club and only made the bench. Nobody on here it seems has mentioned the Koeman factor in Toby's resurrection as a player, that should not be under-estimated nor the player's own sense of loyalty and belonging dismissed out of hand. Hi might actually like it here and want to stay awhile.
