david in sweden Posted 17 February, 2015 Share Posted 17 February, 2015 I've always tried to follow the progress of our younger players (used to watch Reserve games at The Dell decades ago), but the success of our Academy lads never ceases to amaze me, so imagine my (pleasant) surprise when I read that Saints' 15 year old Calum Slattery is captaining England's U16 side in the current international tournament. I've watched highlights of all the Youth games on You Tube and Calum stands out like a beacon in many games. Calum has been a regular in the U18 side all season, (and managed a few goals as well), and didn't look out of place when he came on as a late sub. in a recent U21 cup game. Definitely " one for the future " but don't be surprised if he suddenly turns up at a higher level next season. The lad looks to be a real talent - even at this age. Lallana's Left Peg Posted 17 February, 2015 Share Posted 17 February, 2015 He is a fantastic talent, and his family and representatives know it as well. They are aware of interest from other clubs and I've been told they are constantly pushing Saints in order to keep him there. He is already playing regularly for the U18's and I believe made an appearance for the U21's (off the bench) already. I think the club are pushing him a little quicker than they'd like but they have people to keep happy and apparently such is his talent it is a compromise they are willing to make. His talent will either take him to a bigger club soon or fast track him to the U21's within 18 months and then who knows.

positivepete Posted 17 February, 2015 Share Posted 17 February, 2015 Please, forgive my ignorance. What type of player is he? He played in the no 10 role in the recent U18 cup defeat against Leicester. I posted after the game that he could be making a first team appearance within two years. Seriously good potential, looks an intelligent footballer, not surprised Arsenal would like him, he is a Wenger type player. Let us hope he stays with us. krissyboy31 Posted 17 February, 2015 Share Posted 17 February, 2015 From the FAY Cup in December That Mirror report was from April last year before the current Management and Coaching team were in place. Seeing a few of his peers sign longterm contracts and being fast tracked into the first team should sway his decision whether to sign pro here. Matthew Le God Posted 17 February, 2015 Share Posted 17 February, 2015 (edited) England captain - aged 15 Imagine my (pleasant) surprise when I read that Saints' 15 year old Calum Slattery is captaining England's U16 side in the current international tournament. His age isn't particularly noteworthy, so I'm unsure why it features in the thread title or is in bold in the opening post. Its not unusual for a 15 year old to be in an under 16 team. He is very talented and captaining the national side is another good sign. Edited 17 February, 2015 by Matthew Le God

Saints related players dominated the last England squad in November 2014... Forster Clyne Lallana Lambert Chambers Shaw Oxlade-Chamberlain Walcott Plus recently we've seen Ward-Prowse as a regular in the under 21's, Reed and Targett in the under 20's and Gallagher in the under 19's. Doctoroncall Posted 18 February, 2015 Share Posted 18 February, 2015 Was that not Harley Willard? Yes it was, although I'm not sure what he's like as a player but obviously has shown some talent for Saints to pick him up. His way was blocked at Arsenal by a couple of exceptional young players (Chris Willock and Charlie Gilmour) at the time which also figured in the switch to Saints. It seems they have progressed as they have both signed pro deals for Arsenal and Chris has already appeared for the first team (in a preseason friendly) aged 16. I think our 'native' intake for the current crop of first year scholars was quite poor (I believe it was the group that were scouted when we were in financial trouble in around 2009) therefore towards the end of last season we went out and attracted / acquired / signed a number of prospects from other clubs. I think around half of this years first year scholars come from other clubs and were only signed towards the back end of last season. Willard is one of them from what I've been told.
