Ralph is loving 'the product'

Agree, but then it was a very hectic time and no one really knew what was going on. People are obviously more understanding now because it is a calmer climate and because he has evidence of the last few months to show he has been doing a good job. He has proven himself so far and well done to him for that.

Won't stop the CoCs though when the summer comes and we lose NC & MS to the "big guns".

I predict we won't have anything like the reaction on here in the summer, chiefly because I don't think we will be losing 6 or 7 players, the manager and the chairman in one go. Besides, I think most expect us to lose those two players unlike last year when no one thought we would lose as much as we did. They also have the sterling work they did in the summer as evidence for this summer so there will be a certain level of trust they have earnt too.

Maybe not 6 or 7, but I think lost year we last 4 key players and one potentially key player in a position where we had an equally (slightly better imo) option, i.e Clyne.

I don't think I'm alone in thinking Morgan is already gone. There's talk Clyne will be off, JRod possibly as well. Can't see Toby sticking around either. I'd say that would be about the same as last summer in terms of players, probably more likely to keep Koeman though (I bloody hope so at least).

That said, I'd be surprised if there was the same level of widespread panic. After last summer, we know we are a strong enough club to survive.

Typo, lost not last.

He comes across as a genuine bloke who is keen for Southampton to progress - what more could we ask for?

Totally agree. I gave him and the board some stick in the summer for the exodus but they have handled it well and we have come through a negative period quite quickly. He seems like a nice guy who genuinely likes the club and those involved in it.

I just hope whatever happens now he and the board have learned from last summer and won't repeat it again. They stood up to a couple of players wanting out and they may have to do that again. Being nice is one thing but to succeed sometimes you need that ruthlessness and the balls to say no.

Think most people accept losing NC and MS. The key is how we deal with the next tier of players like Victor and Jrod.

Unless we've truly discovered the footballing Grail, expect to see some mean reversion in the effectiveness and efficiency of our transfer dealings - something which will be easier to absorb if we have fewer rather than more players to replace.

Tricky with Vic, what's he got left 2 years? Would be some coup getting him to sign up again. Could probably hold him one more year, not too sure how he would react to having a move blocked though.

Fair play to Morgan really, he clearly wanted out last summer, but has been a total pro on the pitch this season. As long as he does do a load of Lallana-esque interviews when he goes I'll hold nothing against Morgan going to a big team, picking a hefty pay bump and winning some trophies. He's easily a good enough player to do so.

Agree. Cant rewrite the past but Morgan will leave on good terms and get a decent reception from me if we come up against him again. Will be more indifferent towards Clyne - that said, he never lied about his reasons for joining us -game-time at a higher level- and its an arrangement that has suited both parties. We really did get him for a snip off palace. Like you, not sure whether Vic will extend his contract; but we do need him to stay another season, if only to ease the transition from Morgan.

It wasn't just who we lost last year, it was the manner that it was done. Even the club have said it wasn't done the way they wanted to but that won't be happening again. Even if we do lose 4 or 5 I reckon it will be in a much more controlled manner and Koeman will be around to oversee it all.

Slagged off when you do a poor job, slagged off when you do a good job. Slagged off if you say too much, slagged off when you say too little. Why anyone wants to run a football club is beyond me.

Utterly pointless comment. There has been no slagging off on this thread and as usual you only see what you want to see.

Yep, can't disagree with that. If Clyne does go the summer we'll have had 3 solid seasons out of a very good player, who has caused no trouble and will most likely see very decent profit. What would he go for, c. £15m? That's at least £10m profit (I'm assuming there was a sell on % in the deal).

Likewise with Vic, would be good to keep him around. That part of the pitch is so key for us, we are so much stronger there than most other teams in the league. Really think that continuity (even if not both available all the time) has helped manage the transition from last year. So, yeah as you say, it would be important to keep him around. That said I do seem to recall him saying something similar about us effectively being a stepping stone, not always what we want to hear but I do understand it. Again, I imagine he he was to go, we'd at least see another tidy profit. Not that that is the most important thing, but it's good for the health of the club.

Yeah, maybe. I'm still not entirely sure how much more could be done.

There were a lot of people out solely for themselves, and I guess with so much in the air it was hard to control all the variables. Not knowing what Poch was upto, Lallana & Lovren acting like utter bells, etc. Sure, learn from mistakes but I still don't think it was as bad as some make out. That's not to say I wasn't worried about what was happening, I'm just not sure there is much any club could do in the situation we were in.

now comes the conjecture over valuations.

If Schneiderlin does go... .can we say he is as good as / better than / Adam Lallana?... who was a £25 million sell, or is Clyne as good as / better than / Luke Shaw (but has more experience?) and worth more.

But we won't have the same situation this season so it is already better. Unless Koeman, Ralph, Clyne, Morgan, Toby, Jay rod and vic all decide to leave before we bring in any replacements we will be fine.

I didn't suggest you did, Hypo. It was merely an additional comment ... to yours....on the other guys' post about vocab. and language.

Maybe you might have read my text with an emphasis that isn't there. Wasn't any inferred criticism of you ...or him.

It's difficult to read inference in the written word. I accept you didn't mean I was being critical.

The numerous threads you've started throughout the season.

When the big guns come circling again, it'll have nothing to do with Ralph, same as last summer.

Would love to be pointed in the direction of "the numerous threads" I have started

So Ralph is not in chare of the transfer committee? Right, who is then? He always sounded like he was.

Nope, he isn't. He's said so himself in interviews at the time last summer. Words to the effect of "I'm not involved in transfers, that's Les Reed's job. I'm just the hockey guy".

no one else worried that we wont get away with losing 4 top players this time round, I mean you could argue that we are not getting away with it now perhaps?

Aye, we are really struggling like.

Everyone loves it when your product is doing well in the market it circulates , He seems to of pulled off a bit of masterstroke rather than stamp on last seasons product and dilute it down like others thought, Him and Les have found a better make up and impressed everyone with its quality! Fair play (still let's not try to prove it wasn't a fluke any time soon eh)

my point being that we haven't (except for Toby, who we probably won't keep) replaced these players with better ones, better manager maybe?

At the end of the day the club sold our best players last season and will probably do the same next summer, which is down to the players to a large degree for sure, but I don't think we are as ambitious as Ralph would tell you.

its definitely a business for these guys now.

Well let's just hope all the drama queens hold their nerve a bit longer this summer when we inevitably lose 2 or 3 to bigger clubs. I won't hold my breath.

I'm in the Ralph fan club and credit to Kat for the vision. Like everything, it won't last forever, enjoy it while we can.

Part two is in today, apparently a year ago we didn't know where were going, and talk of selling is something that is not talked about. So he definitely suggests that the club being sold was an option perhaps.

But there is a lot of "at the moment" lines.

and we are a ship and sometimes it gets a bit windy :(

With this newfound popularity aboard I look forward to the huge spike in commercial revenue which will allow us to offer better salaries to players in order to keep them here. Or else someone isn't doing their job properly.

Ever thought that the players may want the "glory" of playing for a big club and they will leave no matter what Saints offer them?

Of course. But there are also plenty that will stay for more money. Or maybe we can attract an ever better calibre of player. Either way a big increase in commercial revenue is very important in the FFP rules.

So you haven't slagged off Ralph then? I don't expect that he would care for a long car journey with you either mush.

After pinning his colours to the cortese mask in the summer our success this year had hit noodles quite hard. He was one of those that believed the day cortese went the club died. I imagine he still sleeps with the Leeds programme under his pillow so he can think about his hero. Be gentle, he's struggling to cope with the Facts that cortese clearly wasn't he greater chairman who ever lived.
