Roger Posted 14 February, 2015 Share Posted 14 February, 2015 When he first played for us he played as a winger almost. Then vs palace was moved upfront and scored vs palace, Chelsea and arsenal. Against qpr was played as a right winger near enough to accommodate Elia. I know he scored but then against west ham was played deeper too and less effective. Would everyone agree his best position is upfront around pelle where he can do more damage. Can we accommodate that system and tadic?
david in sweden Posted 14 February, 2015 Share Posted 14 February, 2015 Mané is very mobile, and seems to turn up on the left as much as the right side. (won't make too many early comparison but has scored from some unbelieveable angles (ala Marian Pahars) With Pelle being so tightly marked of late, I can see Graziano dragging defenders off (as Lambert used to) ....and opening up space for Mane to run onto a pass / centre. (Similar situation with Elia). Like you, I like the idea of saying so-and-so is a left winger, or striker but playing styles are much more varied nowadays. When I started watching Saints in the 1950's....we had centre-forwards who were served by tricky wingers, and inside forwards who were fed by wing-halfs, and full backs who rarely crossed the half-way line. However, so far this season .....we've had 12 different goalscorers, and most of them have come from midfielders, or defenders. Interestingly, neither of our all time goalscorers was an out-and-out striker. Mick Channon (though occasionally wearing a no.9) was an inside forward (old terms) and MLT was called an attacking midfielder. As players no longer having meaningful numbers on their shirts (1-11), I'm glad every time we get the ball over the line, no matter who scores it. I guess in modern football, its not as clear cut as either being a "winger" or a "centtre forward", same as Jay Rodriguez for example, "Wide attacker", Part of a front 3 etc. I guess we can afford to play Mane just off Pelle if we're getting plenty of width from our two full backs, then the usual midfield options of Wanyama, Schneiderlin and JWP/Davis. Ex Lion Tamer Posted 14 February, 2015 Share Posted 14 February, 2015 On his YouTube video prior to signing, most of his goals and key interventions come from central striking positions rather than cutting inside from the wing. It's just tricky tactically these days to play two up front

Convict Colony Posted 16 February, 2015 Share Posted 16 February, 2015 Mane is fast becoming one of my favourite players purely down to his desire to play in short sleeve shirts no matter how cold or wet it is. He did it again in training today while the other wimps are wearing jackets, he's bad ass.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 17 February, 2015 Share Posted 17 February, 2015 I would like to see him played central behind Pelle just for spells during the game when we're on the front foot. I think he could be the key to unlocking defences, but he needs to work on his offside trap awareness.

It's that weird golden stripe in his hair as well...at first I thought it looked stupid as anything...now (what with the amount he's now bringing to the team) I think it looks badass Edited 17 February, 2015 by eddie

Fatboy40 Posted 17 February, 2015 Share Posted 17 February, 2015 I'd like to see Pelle on the bench for one game and Mane take his place up front, just to see what would happen (it would either be the second coming or a horrendous mistake, but we don't have the luxury to take the risk though ?...). As the form striker the team has to be built around him (without sacrificing our defence)

DrunkenSaint Posted 18 February, 2015 Share Posted 18 February, 2015 There are 2 fwd lineups id like us to test out..probably wont happen but here goes...Vic and morgan will be needed in the defensive role. Elia Pelle Djuricic ......Mane Vic Morgan or Elia Mane Djuricic ......Tadic Vic Morgan The reason why i would leave out Davis and jwp is when u have both Vic and Morgan in the team the 3rd midfielder needs to assist the striker a lot more and they just don't do that, they are not attacking enough (if we are winning they are both good to come on to close the game down). Having Djuricic in there is a risk as we really don't know what he's really like but Tadic is dreadful there and goes missing in most games when played on the right. I would really like us to go back to that 352 formation which worked both times we tried it, it seemed to suit Pelle a lot better but with the wingers we have now i don't think that would happen now. Andy Durman Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 Another reason why we are finding it hard of late to score goals is because teams have worked us out. Stick two players on Pelle and win the second ball. Teams know they can wind up Pelle. If you cut out the supply from and to Pelle then we will struggle to score. We need other options and Djuricic, Mane, Long and even Elia make that possible.
Redslo Posted 19 February, 2015 Share Posted 19 February, 2015 It might be interesting to surprise someone by not starting Pelle so they have no idea what to do with us.
