Hampshire CCC - 2015 Season

Halo Stickman

Recommended Posts

Sussex have a stand going with Luke Wright - need to get a wicket soon.

Especially as we're starting to get knocked about a bit, 3 consecutive 4s off Bird in this over. Still plenty of leeway but I doubt we'll be wanting to have to get much more than 200 or so.

We need 126 to win.

Just chatted to a friend who went all day yesterday. He said the whole team were up for it and it showed on the pitch. Looks like the same today. I back us to get our first win of the season

In fact failing to get 126 in a day and a half would be a bit of a let down really.

End of July. Will be available for the 50 over comps and last 5 Championship games. He wants to sign for next season as well!

Do you think we will get Kyle Abbott back? Am happy with our batting its our bowling attack we have failed to address since Dimi, Tahir, Cork and Afridid left we have not replaced that quality.

He was on the commentary yesterday, and said that he wants to come back when his international commitments allow him to sign up for a full season or close enough. He was there supporting the boys and has already spoken to the club.

Would be a good signing for next year too IMO. Hit and miss and high economy rate but the Championship rewards wins and he is the only Hants bowler capable of running through a side when on form.

He hasnt played a lot of red ball cricket for a while so still finding form too.

I think Bates is actually just the poster boy for the shambolic way our recruitment has been run over the last few years, rather than him being the biggest victim. As you rightly say, his batting wasn't good enough, and no other county has signed him even as a second-choice keeper (you'd think Somerset might be looking for a backup keeper now Kieswetter's been forced to retire).

We had a load of young players in the side a few years ago, ably led by a handful of wily old pros (the likes of Cork, Mascarenhas and Pothas), whereas now we've got a load of old pros and only a handful of youngsters, the majority of whom were in that same side years ago anyway. Nobody's really forced their way through since then, Chris Wood's bowling isn't fast enough for the four-day game, Briggs has been messed about a hell of a lot, and other youngsters who have played a few games and seemingly done alright have been let go while we bring in older players on presumably big wages.

Is there anyone coming through the academy who is likely to be good enough, or is the whole system just going through the motions in order to get the ECB funding attached to it?

This hits the nail on the head and seems unanswerable which may be why no one has tried to answer it. Is there a recruitment policy? We are behaving like Pompey did under Redcrapp, just buying in expensive oldies for a few weeks. good to see Bates is playng for Somerset

ECB have just fined us £4000 for having 5+ disciplinary incidents in the past 12 months. Also a suspended points deduction if we get another in the next 12 months.

16 points if its in the CCC and 2 if its in either the T20 or One Day Cup. :scared:

If relegation is certain with a match or more left at the end of the season, a convenient brawl at that time would nicely use up the 16 point penalty.

It's strange. I feel we're we're all pretty negative about Hampshire, but we've been in 5 one day finals in the last 10 years. Thats pretty amazing. People say we build a team around 20/20 success only, but if that was the case surely Emgland would be picking loads of Hampshire players for 20/20 cricket..but they don't! Our success in 20/20 is a bit of a mystery. We don't sign any international marquee signings, none of our players are deemed England regulars, but we keep rolling on..it's bizarre.

I dont find it bizarre in the least we have some really experienced batters look what Ervine did last night probably won the game for us

Long may it stay that way! - although Vince now picked for England T20 next week.

We must be the best T20 team ove the last few years - Adams, Carberry, Vince & Ervine all attacking batsmen by nature, Wood & Briggs give little away (& Dimi when he was here), we had a stoke of luck with Will Smith's bowling - and the overseas signings have most come off - McKenzie excellent, Maxwell we got from local club cricket! Yasir Arafat looks good this year too

Would be nice to have a decent championship team though!

You think those complete utter fckwits that have been running English cricket even know where Hampshire is.....it goes back way beyond this to when I used to watch Turner and Jesty who were in top 5 in England yet never ever got selected. Middlesex, Surrey and Kent thats your key to being selected.

Who knows what this is about - what are the five (or more) disciplinary incidents? It does all sound rather disconcerting.

Usually dissent when given out- Adams and Carberry this season. Audible obscenity - Shah (when he hit that enormous 6 off the last ball at home to Middlesex.)

Suspect Mr Coles may have been in trouble last season.

We sound more and more like the cricketing version of Pompey, no wonder Bransgrove threw in his lot with them

Taking all into account this was a pretty even day

Tomlinson suffered an injury early on (not sure what but he was limping) and after that was bowling off about 7 paces. Bird bowled ok and better with the second new ball but for me he is either not fully up to speed, match fitness wise or not as good as we thought he would be. Berg was his usual reliable self. Dawson dropped Hildreth in the slips when he was on about 12 and that proved costly. However he made up for it with a couple of decent wickets.

Wicket looks good for batting.

Oh and Michael Bates got a good round of applause when he came to the wicket. Scored two cracking 4's off Tomlinson!

I suppose if you are being really generous Hampshire had to bat in far more difficult batting conditions. First the rain, then the sun came out and made it a bit steamy. On the plus side by enforcing the follow on Somerset have handed us our best chance of winning the game, rattle up 400, set them 200 to win in 60 overs on a fourth day wicket. Theres always hope.

The Club is a shambles. Bransgrove flashed a lot of money to get the stadium built and flashes more to hire players from abroad in short spells but that is not the way to build a team or a spirit or an ethos. It's the Pompey way not the Southampton way. Who is responsible for team selection? And who is responsible for the academy? Feeding the young ones into the team is just not working and when it did work outstandingly well (Bates) they sack him!

I agree things look a bit grim this season, but I think you're being a little bit harsh on Bransgrove. In the last 10 years we've won the 40/50 over final 3 times, appeared in the final on another two occasions won the 20/20 final twice and appeared in another 3 final days for 20/20. I don't buy the argument that we are geared up for 20/20 as if that was the case the England team would be full of our 'specialist' 20/20 players. And quite honestly I don't think they're being overlooked...if I was an England Selector I don't think i'd pick any of our players. I think we just don't have any players coming through in respect of the 4 day game. I watched Hants in the Championship between 93 to 99 and it was torture, it just goes like that. Having said all that I do feel that it is now time to focus our funding on our academy, because if we don't I can see it all going pear-shaped in about two years.

Before you start your criticism of Mr Bransgrove you should have done some research. He no longer puts money into the club. He has no influence over the playing team or recruitment. He is merely a figurehead Chairman now although of course they listen to his wise counsel when they ask him.

The club has Bransgrove as Chairman of the board, MD/Financial Director who is David Mann, Commercial Director who is Stuart Robinson (the man who invented the T20 format when at the ECB) and Tim Tremlett who is Company Secretary

Giles White is director of Cricket and the one responsible for recruitment/contracts etc. Dale Benkenstein is First Team Coach, Tony Middleton is 1st Team Batting Coach. Charlie Freeston and Craig White are 2nd Team Coaches and Bobby Parks is the Academy Director

Why keep going on about Bates! he may be the best gloveman but he is no batsman. He scored a few 4's but otherwise looked his old awkward self. We love him to bits at the Ageas Bowl

Who would you drop and who would you bring in? We are back in the 1st division after a splendid season in 2014. We at the Ageas Bowl all knew it was going to be tough. Look at the number of teams that go up only to come down again. 7th in the table will be a decent result for us. You can only blood the occasional second 11 player. We are doing that with Terry and a young Wheal.

Its gone pear shaped

Ha ha fair play mate! Maybye The memory of the 93-99 'Lawrence Pritipaul, Derek Kenway Glory years' has given me a sense of perspective! but I concede I have an uneasy feeling about the current squad, we do seem to lack direction.
