saint1977 Posted 2 September, 2015 Share Posted 2 September, 2015 Who is this lad Stevenson? Just seen he's 23 and been plucked from Devon in recent weeks, how come he's been thrown straight into the first XI? Seems to have done pretty well, mind you... For once I'm genuinely ITK. Ryan moved from Totnes & Dartington to Torquay to play in the Devon League. After a handful of games where he wreaked havoc, Devon selected him for Minor Counties and Hampshire spotted him. Had a two week trial last month, was invited to stay and all of a sudden he's making his First Class debut! Think he's been signed until the end of the season and they must rate him highly, expect him to get at least a one year deal in the autumn. He's 6 foot 4 or 5 and certainly got it through here in S Devon although no speed guns to be certain! He's a very decent batsman as you've seen today, was rated as an all-rounder but probably an 8 in a first class order. He's known as a very good golfer and went to Uni out there to try and develop a pro career in that so this is his first real season trying out in cricket. Real story and he's making a great start - good on him.
Bucks Saint Posted 2 September, 2015 Share Posted 2 September, 2015 Thanks 77, very helpful. Lets hope he keeps developing at the same rate, we could have a real find.

Window Cleaner Posted 3 September, 2015 Share Posted 3 September, 2015 Comfortable 3 day win then, amazing what you can do with a bit of decent bowling. Pity Sussex look like beating Worcs though. Still gives us it all to do but a decent result against Somerset might see us out of the woods..and them in them.
Bucks Saint Posted 3 September, 2015 Share Posted 3 September, 2015 As long as Worcs lose its not too bad, it was always unlikely to be the ideal draw. Somerset lost too so all in all, a very good outcome

Saint Charlie Posted 3 September, 2015 Share Posted 3 September, 2015 Great win. Also some talk of Hants signing Shane Watson perhaps for next season in some capacity. Hants Championship record with Fidel Edwards must be miles better than without. Thats the value of wicket taking bowlers.

Hants Championship record with Fidel Edwards must be miles better than without. Thats the value of wicket taking bowlers. Indeed. He played in all of the three wins I think (and not many of the other matches). Reports that he withdrew today with a hamstring problem.
Weston Saint Posted 4 September, 2015 Share Posted 4 September, 2015 Good win. Shame about his hamstring injury. I do not know how bad it is at the present but he is a big doubt for Somerset next Wednesday. Still we will have Tomlinson, Briggs and Crane available to us. Tomlinson has been offered a lead bowling coaching role with Hampshire over the winter and is delighted. He has a year left on his contract but I can see him moving more to coaching with Topley coming in. Nothing more on having Edwards next season. I suppose it depends on what division we are in for the clubs point of view Rumour that Adams will not be playing next year. I was with his Dad for the early part of the England Australia game but the rumour came later so I did not get chance to ask him Another rumour (Echo) doing the rounds is that Watson might be are overseas next year. Wait to see on that one but it might make sense. He is still a class player.

Wait to see on that one but it might make sense. He is still a class player. At first-class level, yeah, I'd agree. Past it on the Test stage these days, but that works in our favour as his availability increases - I wonder if the Aussie selectors might do away with him in the ODI side over the next year or so as well, you wouldn't expect Watson to still be in the side come the next World Cup. Might have to get some special small pads manufactured for him though

Dellman Posted 9 September, 2015 Share Posted 9 September, 2015 Yes I was there, Taunton is a homely and welcoming ground and we were allowed on the playing area to view the wicket and for kids to play with a tennis ball in the intervals (unlike Rose Bowl) but the Hampshire performance was lame and without heart or soul, what has happened to my county? Dellman Posted 9 September, 2015 Share Posted 9 September, 2015 No idea! Baffled me, but there was some malaise, shoulders drooped, no one talking to or encouraging anyone. the batting was fit for a 20/20, seven caught behind the wicket. Guess the spirit does take a knock when relegation looms
Bucks Saint Posted 10 September, 2015 Share Posted 10 September, 2015 (edited) Great! Just taken a wicket! Somerset only 558-5 now. Dawson the only one with any fight? Wow Edited 10 September, 2015 by Bucks Saint
St Lej Posted 10 September, 2015 Share Posted 10 September, 2015 Absolutely pathetic. It may a batting deck but even so this is a horrendous fielding effort. Even more so that batting effort by us earlier.

Dellman Posted 10 September, 2015 Share Posted 10 September, 2015 How come we bowled 16 no balls? That's pretty infantile. the clearout should begin with the management and so called coaches. And can we stop importing mercenaries and give our own a proper chance
Dellman Posted 10 September, 2015 Share Posted 10 September, 2015 Sorry, that should be 26 no balls, who can believe it, but it's true
Berkshire Saint Posted 10 September, 2015 Share Posted 10 September, 2015 It's two for a no ball in county cricket so was actually 'only' 13 but still not great. Three of them were by spinners as well!
Lets B Avenue Posted 11 September, 2015 Share Posted 11 September, 2015 Jimmy Adams finally gets a century. Hants 258-1 Adams 117* Vince 69*. Still 132 behind, but in with a chance of a draw.

Bucks Saint Posted 12 September, 2015 Share Posted 12 September, 2015 Draw achieved, a decent outcome after their huge total. Our 2nd effort, on top of theirs, makes our first innings performance look even worse. Still onwards into next week, we are still in this.
Weston Saint Posted 12 September, 2015 Share Posted 12 September, 2015 Well done to Carberry who passed 1,000 championship runs for the season in this game and that without a century this season. Well done to Edwards who took his 300th first class wicket in this game Well done to Adams who got a big century, his first of the season Shame we had such a disaster on the first day on a very flat wicket. stevegrant Posted 13 September, 2015 Share Posted 13 September, 2015 If only we could have put that second innings batting performance on in the first innings, the bonus points we could have got (and limited Somerset's bowling points) might prove to be the difference between staying up and going down. I see the Yorkshire game is on TV this week...

Window Cleaner Posted 14 September, 2015 Share Posted 14 September, 2015 I reckon we are going to have to win both games. Bit of a long shot....& then we have to rely on the weather as well. That will depend very much on the outcome of the Sussex-Somerset game though. A really bad result for either of them will leave us needing a draw with a few bonus points and a win at most. Window Cleaner Posted 14 September, 2015 Share Posted 14 September, 2015 That's a good point. although now looking quite hypothetical. Hants won't get much, slow scoring on a rain affected day and Sussex who looked in trouble at one time have recovered to about 260-6 so unless Somerset fail completely with the bat and lose miserably we're for Div 2. Dellman Posted 14 September, 2015 Share Posted 14 September, 2015 We deserve to go down, and we will go down. Sorry to say that, I've followed them ever since the war and I've never felt the leadership on and off the field to be so weak. I wouldn't go buying in more players, i would examine our own structure and staffing.
Torres Posted 14 September, 2015 Share Posted 14 September, 2015 I know what the answer would be from the management and coaching staff (media trained codswallop) but I do wonder what their aims and objects for the club really are. Do they really care about CC position and status or is it actually all about limited over c cricket? Honestly...
Weston Saint Posted 14 September, 2015 Share Posted 14 September, 2015 I dined with Rod Bransgrove today. His one remaining wish is for us to win the 1st Division Championship. Bucks Saint Posted 15 September, 2015 Share Posted 15 September, 2015 Batted well in tough conditions so far in this match. I am sure they will go for 350 after lunch today, need 53 off 13 for another point. The other teams have all had rain impact too and tomorrow looks a washout, so bonus point could be crucial
Window Cleaner Posted 15 September, 2015 Share Posted 15 September, 2015 Might even be going for 400 and a fifth point, need 26 from 3 overs with 3 wickets left. Bit of excitement eh !
stevegrant Posted 15 September, 2015 Share Posted 15 September, 2015 One hell of an effort in the last 15 overs or so, got to 400 with nearly 2 overs to spare! Maximum batting bonus points, I think for the first time this season. Very timely as well considering Sussex also got maximum points - is there an argument for wanting a Sussex win in their game against Somerset so we've got one target in reach rather than two slightly further away going into the final game? If Somerset were bowled out below 200 and lost, they'd be on 149 points, while 3 bowling points for us and a draw would leave us one point adrift of them. Not over yet, by any means...
