SaintsFanNYC Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 I'll be visiting Southampton from New York next week for the West Ham match and I've never been to St. Mary's before so I wasn't sure what the rules are regarding bags and security at the stadium (Southampton's website was of little help). In the States you can bring a messenger bag or a backpack to most baseball or hockey or basketball games, but there are zero bags beyond small pocketbooks allowed at NFL games. Am I going to be able to bring my messenger bag into St. Mary's or will I have to leave it at home? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Saint_clark Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 Any bags at all, although the stewards will probably want a quick look through it as you enter the ground.
DrZuess1979 the 2nd Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 You can take bags in, they just have a rifle through before you go in.
SaintsFanNYC Posted 3 February, 2015 Author Posted 3 February, 2015 Great. Are there any particular items that are considered contraband that I shouldn't have? Obviously alcohol or, like, knives, wouldn't be allowed in, but is there something I might not be thinking of?

Goatboy Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 WTF is a "messenger bag"? About 15 quid to you PB.

So I wouldn't bother having any drinks in your bag.
trousers Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 You can't take Spam into the stadium in its original tin, it has to be decanted into a Tupperware container.
Delboy Dave Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 Just make sure you have a spare lid in your pocket when they take the one off your bottle
TwoPints Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 Bestial porn and rocket launchers are a no no. Won't make that mistake again. lol
shurlock Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 (edited) Having been to a few sports events in the US, you can basically get away with anything here, though I did have to plead to a palace steward one year to allow me to bring in a swiss army knife Edited 3 February, 2015 by shurlock
ZebadeeRust Posted 4 February, 2015 Posted 4 February, 2015 Leave your selfie stick and foam finger at home. Not security related. You just don't want to look like a tosspot.
hasper57saint Posted 4 February, 2015 Posted 4 February, 2015 I never have a problem as I am the 'bag carrier' for my nipper and three grandsons.Bottled water and flask of home made coffee (it's crap in the stadium) and, they've never taken the lid off the water.Enjoy the game with us. PS. Mine's a two strap back pack.
Coldridge Posted 4 February, 2015 Posted 4 February, 2015 Great. Are there any particular items that are considered contraband that I shouldn't have? Obviously alcohol or, like, knives, wouldn't be allowed in, but is there something I might not be thinking of? I saw a couple trying to bring in a glass jar of pickled fish or something such among other weird picnic items. Needless to say, you are not allowed to bring pickled fish into the stadium. Actually, that might just be glass jars.

Obviously alcohol or, like, knives, wouldn't be allowed in, but is there something I might not be thinking of? Pompey merchandise. If seen, it produces a reaction similar to the publishing of a Mohammad cartoon.
cellone Posted 4 February, 2015 Posted 4 February, 2015 PS. Mine's a two strap back pack. Bloody braggart!
Dimond Geezer Posted 4 February, 2015 Posted 4 February, 2015 They've never taken the lids off my bottles, but cans are a definite no no.

If it's a large bag that is unlikely to fit under your seat then contact the club on the following address and they will keep it behind reception for you until after the game. I did this a couple of times when I combined a trip to watch Southampton with a weekend visit of my family whilst at Uni. supporterrelations@saintsfc.co.uk
Goatboy Posted 4 February, 2015 Posted 4 February, 2015 I used to take two hip flasks and metal cups and make half time cocktails in league 1. Purely medicinal obviously;)

krissyboy31 Posted 4 February, 2015 Posted 4 February, 2015 Those collapsible plastc drinks bottle you get in the pound shop are ideal for getting vodka in. Just strap them round your waist like a colostomy bag. Mind you with the improved CCTV I'd probably say to scap that!!
svetigpung Posted 5 February, 2015 Posted 5 February, 2015 if you're gonna take a backpack into the ground , make sure that you have shaved (no Tim Howard beards) and are not wearing a long white tunic. It will make for a more relaxing experience for all those around you. And definitely NO effing selfie stick!
stardustonmyfeet Posted 5 February, 2015 Posted 5 February, 2015 What about my thermos flask lid? I can't be drinking cold soup.

If it's a two strap back pack like hasper57saint's you may find a lot of people staring at you in envy.
The9 Posted 5 February, 2015 Posted 5 February, 2015 So to recap, no obviously daft stuff like guns and knives, no glass containers (unless you're in the Chapel so you're nowhere near the away fans), no bottle tops (again mostly enforced in Northam), and expect them to have a look through your bag... Unless it's a Saints merchandise bag, in which case they generally don't check!
hasper57saint Posted 5 February, 2015 Posted 5 February, 2015 If it's a two strap back pack like hasper57saint's you may find a lot of people staring at you in envy. It's a bit of a bugger having to sling it on the front to get through the bloody turnstile but I try to be fashionionable by only using one strap.

Coxford_lou Posted 6 February, 2015 Posted 6 February, 2015 I think you'll find yourself bang in chic doing the two strap. Noticed young dudes doing this. Only if you've got a beard and hipster glasses.
lifeintheslowlane Posted 6 February, 2015 Posted 6 February, 2015 If you're wearing a backpack in a confined space, (e.g. Train, Bus, Football Stadium etc) expect to be beaten to a pulp you f***ing selfish inconsiderate road-block. Apart from that hope you enjoy the experience.
Sydenhampton Posted 6 February, 2015 Posted 6 February, 2015 If your tickets are for the Chapel or Itchen (bar blocks 1-3), don't take a sense of humour in with you. It won't be welcome and there's every chance you'll be ejected should you choose to use it.
