david in sweden Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 young players can go off the boil quickly, and it takes time to recover any real form.... (Historically)... you can name almost any of our younger legendary strikers....who came through the ranks; Chivers, Channon, Moran, MLT, and even Shearer who burst on the scene as teenagers, but took a season or two for them to become " regulars " , let alone first named strikers. Sam G. has shown that he's a cut above the rest, but he won't become a Harry Kane overnight. Although he wasn't our youth product, James Beattie was still only around 20 when he arrived, and his first couple of seasons were a total disaster, before he eventually got going.
GarrettIvo Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 Good to see him back on the park, even if only for the U21s. Can only be positive in the medium term. Will need at least a few games at that level before he can be seriously considered at senior level. What he will do then is provide an option off the bench for those times we are comfortable in a game and want to give Pelle a rest or try different options. Not sure how anyone can see any negativity in that.
Professor Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 Gallagher may well be back in full training and the club will give him as much game time as possible, but I don't expect to see his name on the first team bench this season. It is encouraging to see Martin Hunter saying he thinks Gallagher will make a full recovery but an injury such as the one he suffered leaves a psychological obstacle to overcome as well as the physical one.
Lets B Avenue Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 James Beattie was still only around 20 when he arrived, and his first couple of seasons were a total disaster, before he eventually got going. Yes indeed. A total disaster. Strange that we voted him player of the year in his first season? Nice revision of history, Dave.
Weston Saint Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 Yes indeed. A total disaster. Strange that we voted him player of the year in his first season? Nice revision of history, Dave. I think you should look again and then decide who is rewriting history! He only scored 5 league goals in his first season (35 appearances) 0 goals second injury hit season (18 )
Ken Tone Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 Anyway -- Gallagher. Did anyone see him play? How did he do? I notice he was subbed immediately after half time .... Not injured again ,I hope, but just too soon for a whole game?

Not injured again ,I hope, but just too soon for a whole game? just watched the post match " interviews / inquest " on the game (with Martin Hunter quite miffed at our performance). He did say they had planned only 45 mins. for Sam - as it was his first game back. Similar comments came from RK in the earlier interview about player signings. I wouldn't expect to see Sam on the bench for some weeks, until he's had a few 90 minutes games - and scored some goals. Right now, Ryan Seager is the man in form...11 goals in 11 Under 21 league games.

Stats. don't always prove a case, but they can be interpreted in many different ways. I was always a fan of Beatts, but he did have a very unfortunate start to his career, and sadly ....an equally sad finish, after he left to go to Everton.
sotonist Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 nevertheless, JB was our player of the season in his first season with us for some reason. he was only two goals short of our joint top scorers.
Window Cleaner Posted 3 February, 2015 Posted 3 February, 2015 (edited) nevertheless, JB was our player of the season in his first season with us for some reason. he was only two goals short of our joint top scorers. I seem to remember that just after joining us he scored a cracker in a close win, crowd took to him instantly. It was also great escape season and he scored a couple of vital goals in our run in. SaintRobbie Posted 6 February, 2015 Posted 6 February, 2015 I don't rate Gallagher......yet. Worse than Mayuka and I can't think of a Premier League striker in any team I wouldnt have instead of him. But, I wish him luck and hope he develops into an outstanding striker.

But, I wish him luck and hope he develops into an outstanding striker. Sorry, what? You rate him as the worst striker currently on the books of any premier league club? That's quite a statement right there. Let that sink in for a minute. You would have any other striker from any other PL team over him. And your basis for this? A handful of games at the tail end of last season and a long period out injured? Seriously, I know it's Friday but you really cannot be trying to make a serious point with that post.

I hope you are not including that "premier league striker" that the lot down the M27 acquired and who is now serving a 7 match suspension ??? Dear oh dear give the lad a chance and think how you would have been like under his circumstances over the last year when you were only 18.

SaintRobbie Posted 7 February, 2015 Posted 7 February, 2015 Do you put the drag on and wind or just let them run? I think he has to go on loan in the Championship. But, he may yet get his chance here as we failed to buy a striker this January. If we miss a Champions League spot the reason will be a failure to have brought in a quality striker. http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2015/02/06/why-this-southampton-stars-recent-form-has-become-a-major-concer/?

Worse than Mayuka and I can't think of a Premier League striker in any team I wouldnt have instead of him. But, I wish him luck and hope he develops into an outstanding striker. Think a little harder then! Because there are a huge number of 19 year strikers at Premier League clubs that aren't as good and/or don't have the experience Sam has.
Saint Without a Halo Posted 7 February, 2015 Posted 7 February, 2015 I believe Spurs almost sold us Harry Kane last summer as they didn't rate him then and look what happened since? 19 year olds will have ups and downs and need our full support, not all will make it but without help and support none will!
kermitsaint Posted 7 February, 2015 Posted 7 February, 2015 From what he showed last season I see no reason to get excited that he is returning to fitness . Would rather have Seager given a run out instead

Grigsy Posted 8 February, 2015 Posted 8 February, 2015 Is he injured again? http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php Doubt it. Wouldn't take that website as a gospel source on injuries. I don't think they have staff spying at Staplewood, or illegally obtaining medical records. Its just a website that aggregates other sources and probably didnt see or care that he played 45mins in the U21s. Saying that, he is surely miles off the reckoning of the first team.

Dark Munster Posted 9 February, 2015 Posted 9 February, 2015 That's good to know. Physioroom is supposed to be reliable, but apparently not.
Ultimatt Posted 13 February, 2015 Posted 13 February, 2015 Started and played 76mins in todays U21 Cup QF. Anyone know how he went?
richard Posted 13 February, 2015 Posted 13 February, 2015 Started and played 76mins in todays U21 Cup QF. Anyone know how he went? I watched it. He looked a bit short of match fitness. Not ready for the first team yet.
