OldNick Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 I went to the game expecting an atmosphere of turmoil and unrest. I was pleasantly surprised that the support was 100% behind the team. Yes there were a few peple holding up Lowe out posters, but that was all. The fans except against Forest home have been superb and long may it be so. When we scored the roar was like the ground was full.
SaintRobbie Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 Frankly, it is because we have the best fans in the South and largest fanbase by a country mile. But it is strange isnt it? Why are those 15000 odd diehards that we can muster (unlike so many many clubs) so punchdrunk? Lowe is laughing at every one of us right now I think. He must think that we are only a little grumpy but support him and his ideas. He must think his redeployed tactic of telling the stewards to search for banners must have worked. Why is the Northam being so toothless? Punchdrunk? Desperate to help the nippas? I suspect moods will openly change once we recieve our next thrashing. But, there is no leadership behind the fans to really reflect opinion.
RobM Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 Just goes to show that for the vast, vast majority football is just a sport. These people go to St.Mary's to watch football, cheer their team on and hope for some good entertainment. Fortunately the majority of our fan base is like this, just fans of football, not wannabe business experts or boardroom analysts.

How can you speak for everyone? I know plenty of Saints fans who, although they are unhappy with the situation, think that the current board are the only people around at the moment who can deal with the current situation and spend most of their time talking about the team rather than the Boardroom. Bourne Valley Saint Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 I thought our support was excellent yesterday. I suppose Reading had about 3000 so that made 17000 Saints fans - more than usual which is a good sign. For those that didn't attend through choice yesterday, well you missed a cracking game full of passion and commitment - even McGoldrick showed some steel and effort which paid off! I can understand some peoples reluctance to attend following the Forest game but surely if you have a season ticket it has got to be worth going - just in case we put in a decent performance as we did yesterday. It only took to the second post to turn this thread into an anti-Lowe theme. 17000 Saints fans went home fairly happy yesterday. For those that can't see beyond their anti-Lowe spectacles - you are inadvertently helping the demise of the club you say you love. The club are trying their hardest to get out of this mess and if another 5000 turn up each week and support the club as did the 17000 yesterday, there might be some hope for the future. You wont be seen as a Lowe luvvie if you turn up, no-one in authority will be laughing at you - you will be just another supporter along with the rest of us. SaintRobbie Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 Robbie, there is no laughing at fans. The fans IMO understand and are behind the young players who show an attachment to ur club You're probably right. Lets rephrase that to 'Lowe is breathing a big sigh of relief at the moment.' I sense he is under more pressure than he's revealing after the AGM. Probably not laughing at us at the moment. Perhaps a little fear, hence his instructions to stewards to start to confiscate 'inflammatory' banners. Certainly, he let slip that Mrs Lowe may not be happy... poor chap must be being bombarded on both sides. I also agree with many here that most want to get behind their team... and by god its needed...perhaps our only hope if we're honest. But, the last few games I have attended those around me have generally been laughing under their scarves at the ineptitude of some of our squad and JP. Fans are not fools. They may cheer but understand how bad things are and frustratingly some snigger under their breadth - still using humour is a good tonic to overcome depression I suppose! I suspect that had Reading bothered to play to their full potential the crowd may have reacted differently. Rarely do we read an analysis of the other teams performance on here, we watch the Saints. I am sure Reading are kicking themselves that they dropped a certain 2 further points yesterday. Anyway. The key question is: Why are we punchdrunk? rocknrollman no2 Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 There were a few Lowe out chants before the game and some good people were holding up A4 size bits of paper saying the same thing. Is it me,or does the music before the start of the game seem to be louder?Perhaps to drown out the chants? But when the game started the crowd got behind the team. I think if we had lost, then the anti Lowe songs wouldve started and i feel it will only be a matter of time before both happen.

Wes Tender Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 Yes, the atmosphere was good in the ground and I sit in the Northam, which was also giving good support. But I suspect that most were prepared to take the game as it came. As it was, the team was playing some attractive football, surprisingly, bearing in mind the selection, showing commitment and effort. Had Reading scored a couple of early goals, things would have been very different IMO. Discontent is rumbling beneath the surface like a volcano ready to blow and it won't need very much to kick off. We're now in the drop zone and if those teams around us start to lift themselves and we don't, that in itself will bring added pressure for demonstrations against our inept manager, the board, or both. redorwhitelion Posted 29 December, 2008 Share Posted 29 December, 2008 Good atmosphere yesterday, but I think numbers were inflated by a few Reading fans in the home end. Doesn't bother me much, tons of space and we might as well take their money off them if they sit there quietly. I was just puzzled by the guy next to me that brought his nipper along in club scarf and hat. To be fair they were pretty well behaved (and he was just a kid), but hardly inconspicuous. Having been on the other side of that particular fence I think I might have made more effort to appear neutral, especially if I wanted to be sure of getting through the turnstile and not atrracting the attention of some 18 stone idiot when Reading inevitably score a late goal. Why doesn't McGoldrick put in that amount of effort every game though? Someone must have put a rocket up McG's behind. We have to defend crosses far better though and need much more height at the back. I haven't logged on to TSW for a few days but I overheard someone at the game say Wotton may be off. If so, this money should used to bring in an experienced organiser either at CB or CM who can close games out. We played far better yesterday but Reading are quite open and I have to say I still didn't fancy us to win with 10 mins to go.

Unlike the sheep who claim they won't go to home games whilst he's in charge, just a badge of convenience in my opinion. Personally i think Lowe deserves all the stick he gets, mainly because of his bad footballing decisions and his arrogance towards us fans. I want the man out of our club for good,so do all my mates and even those people you say hello to at the game, but you dont know their name. My brother who dislikes football also wants Rupert to go,as does my dog,who normally is timid, but at the mere mention of Lowes name, she will bite you without a second thought. I still go to all the games because i have a ST.But i doubt very much i will renew next year because i am sooooo fed up with the goings on at St Marys. And believe me i am far from being alone. If that makes me a sheep, then fair enough. Though i do think that Wilde should get more grief than he does, but i guess he would have to show up for that.
