Jack Cork Signs for Swansea

Know the details of the deal? He'd most likely know there was interest and a headline figure, doubt he'd know detail, payment terms, timescales etc which is half the battle.

Didn't this discussion start from a tweet from his Dad with the headline numbers?

It did and the point being the headline figures only tell half the story if correct.

But the discussion is about the same man (Jacks Dad) comparing two headline numbers he would have from exactly the same source (his son). All in all exactly the same set of conditions to make a comparison.

So what's your point?

That the headline figure that was offered in the summer and the headline figure that was agreed now could well have been under different conditions.

For example, the original deal offered by Swansea this week might have been £3m (as quoted by various sources) with it spread over time, based on appearances etc, same as the £6m in the summer. After the negotiations, the club agree £1.5m, but all upfront, immediately paid for example.

Good luck to him, decent player. 1.5m though? I know he didn't have much contract left, but that's still a bit of a mugging!

Not really. We wanted to keep him as a quality fringe player and offered good terms but he shows class by opting for regular football over a big pay day. Once he made that decision the money was largely irrelevant with six months left on the contract.

Top man who will do well at swansea

If we accept (as you do, as you don't even accept the players involved know) that no one outside of the club finance officer is ever going to know those details ever, shall we just use headline figures as a reasonable guide?

No, because you're missing the point - the difference between a deal agreed and a deal/offer proposed by only one party.

Gotta say fair play, Jack. Going for the football, which hasn't always been the case. I personally think it's a mistake by potentially both parties, but if Koeman has already got his eyes on other, better players, then Cork's opportunities here are going to be limited.

The real test of how fans feel about a player comes when they return to SMS. I think Jack will be warmly welcomed.

Fair enough. Don't go commenting on transfer fees ever again, then.

Why not? You're still struggling to get your head around the difference between a fee offered at one point in time and a fee agreed 6months later. It's not complicated, but don't let it upset you so much.

You seem to be unable to accept the player involved having more than a weeny bit of knowledge of both of them.

Hopefully he does a quick lap around the pitch after the game on sunday (i know he won't be in the squad!) would be nice to show our appreciation.

Why?

He turned down a new contract . He had the chance to play for us but decided to go to Swansea , and you want us to give him a lap of honour? Weird .....

A shame to see him go. Jack Cork is a good, honest professional who had very few poor games for us and eventually found himself crowded out on merit. He's leaving us for the best of reasons as well - he's a player who just wants to play regularly. Nothing wrong with that at all. Good luck, Jack, in every game you play against teams other than Southampton.

Good solid mid-table PL midfielder, gone to a good solid mid-table PL club. The absence of bids from other clubs in the top 6 is notable, given that he has been touted around for half a season.

Good luck to him.

By "notable" I'll assume you mean "as expected".

looking at a 25 year old player who was an ever-present in the L1 season, but has since been overshadowed in the Championship / Prem. seasons by others, Jack only got games when others were injured.

He would have felt he spent too much time on the bench and not enough from the start. One quote yesterday(about contract offer) said ..." it wasn't about the numbers, it was about playing time." Says it all.

I don't blame him really, he still has a good few years of football in him, and he'll be one of the first names on Garry Monk's team sheet every week which is what he wants / needs.

The bottom line being - we got £4 million for a " bench player " who cost 750K five years ago, and contributed well enough to the journey with over 120 games.

Good luck Jack. If he stays fit ...Swansea may see a good emerging Prem. midfielder, and they will say they got a good deal in this market.

He joined us on 7 July 2011, not in League One. His return from injury in the fall of 2012 was when our season turned around. He was only overshadowed after Wanyama arrived, and not always then.
