Tonny Vilhena

Not by his club. His agent let Koeman know that the player wasn't happy (presumably he knows Koeman) but that doesn't mean that a) Koeman has to let the World know that and b) it doesn't mean we should try and get the player on loan and then offer to pay up to half his value with fantasy payments thrown in.

You can pretend you wouldn't care if the situation were reversed all you like but it doesn't mean it wasn't a laughable proposition for Feyenoord.

Why would I pretend? It really doesn't bother me what people offer. It is a part of the process and the clubs involved are the ones who make the decisions. We clearly weren't too bothered about this guy otherwise we would have offered more. I don't know why it bothers you but ever since the summer you seem to have it in for the management and pop up to moan at every opportunity. We have signed three players in this window (if you included RB). We were going to take a punt on another but Feyenoord didn't agree with our valuation of the player. We are doing really well in the Premiership. Cheer up FFS.

Perfectly happy thanks, and I don't "have it in" for anyone. Just making a point that it's pointless trying to justify how we handled this bid when the other side have good reason to be annoyed when you step back and take a look at it.

http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/11775643.Saints_to_make_summer_swoop_for_Vilhena_/?ref=twt

Saints opted not to stump up that cash this time round, but might be tempted to move again in the summer when Vilhena’s value will have significantly lowered.

Koeman said: “It’s always a little bit of playing between clubs if you are interested in a player, and Tonny Vilhena is a young player with one season more contract.

“You put a price on that and Les Reed is the man involved and to speak to the clubs about players and to do the business.

“But Feyenoord asked too much money also in my opinion about a young player, one, with, second, one season more contract and, third, he is not playing. Ok, we didn’t agree that.”

When asked if Saints might revive their interest at the end of the season Koeman replied: “Maybe in the summer.

“First of all, it’s an interesting player, because it’s a left-midfield player and, all the young ones, we don’t have a left-foot midfield player – we don’t have it – and that makes the player special, and I know the player of course.”

He added: “The club can say ‘this is the price and lower than that that’s not possible’, and we are free to say ‘okay, that’s our price and higher than that we don’t do the business’.

“It’s a pity for the player, because really the player likes to come.

“I have contacts with the player, but I said to the player, ‘okay, we keep contact, and maybe there will be another chance in the end of the season.’

I understand that Saints want the best deal but trying to get Vilhena on loan in first instance and coming up with the solution above as the best offer is embarassing to the extreme. This is pretty much comparable to Liverpool/United offering the same amount for JWP with a 1,5 year contract. It's crazy and a waste of time and energy.

Understand your point of view but with Vilhena not prioritised as a first team player it seems more comparable with Cork than JWP aside from the length of contract.

agree Koeman shouldn't have spoken unless the deal was agreed, but that is not his department, perhaps he was trying to force the hands of both sides to conclude the deal.

In January I would hope we are looking to sign Clasie rather than Vilhena. Volhena looked like a stop-gap solution.

I'm surely not alone in having read an article somewhere last year.....

....which said that Vilhena was keen to come (and play for Koeman), but that his mother was dangerously ill and he didn't want to leave the country (Holland, that is)

Koeman did a nice sales pitch for Vilhena joining us on the summer in todays presser.

Said nothing will happen with him in Jan though.

tapping up IMO

not really excited by this signing. We need a proper replacement for Morgan/Vic. Not someone who MAY come good in a year

Bit on Vilhena here.

Sounds like he would be a low risk and high potential summer signing as a free transfer.

How would he fit in though? Not a fan of padding out the squad. There is so much money about this summer we should only be identifying players better than what we have - but that is just the approach I would take.

According to the article he is an attack minded midfielder who likes playing the 10 role seems like that would be a good edition to the squad doesn't it?

The Feyenoord midfielder is attacking minded, which is why he has struggled to break into the side this season as he can be lazy defensively when used as part of a midfield three. His best position is as a number ten, with his movement being one of the major strengths to his game. He knows when to stay deep and when to make surging runs into the box. He is also an excellent finisher with both his feet and his head. As expected from a Dutch youth international, Vilhena is very good when passing the football, with the ability to play defence-splitting passes.

As an Ajax fan I hate to say it but he would be a good addition. He's not a natural number ten even though he fits have the creativity. He's really developed his defensive game recently and could do a job replacing Wanyama in my opinion. He's still very young (only 21 with 5 seasons/100+ games experience). If we can get him on a free in the summer or for a small sum now we should go for it. The only reason not to would be Reed but the question is if he is good enough if he isn't better then Vilhena.

Not sure no10 is a role to be signing hopefuls from dodgy leagues.

We have Mane, Davis and JWP, plus we now have the option to play 2 strikers from Pelle, Long, Austin and Rodriguez.

Really think the squad is big enough and people need to go before we start adding players, and when we do, it should be a far higher quality.

Mane won't be here next season, Davis is pushing 30 and JWP is terrible as an AM/10 so we do need someone in that position, weather that's Vilhena or some one else, we need more attacking midfield options.

Absolutely. He is an ideal replacement for Wanyama. He is not as tall of course but but very strong, good defensively and makes strong bursts through the middle or wide to get up and support the forwards. He has a good passing range and a fantastic attitude. He was the man of the match yesterday despite being on the losing side. Very very impressive. BTW Elia was also playing and was awful. He is going to be chased by umpteen clubs in the Summer but a bid now might just get him this month.

He looks well off the pace today and doesn't look any better than Classie to me. I would not want a midfield of Classie and Vilhena or even Read for that matter, particularly in the Premier league! This small midfield would leave us very exposed with very little height and I cannot see Koeman or the club going for that.

"And when you play well, like Adam Lallana, or other guys who have done very well at Southampton, then you can end up at a big club."

The indignity.

My thoughts exactly - suggesting that we are not a big club. Hmmmmmm.. ****

i'd take him too in fact, I would've taken him and romeu instead of clasie last summer. he's a lot more suited to the pl than clasie, physically and in his play style. I watched a couple of fayenoord matches like a few months back, and really thought he was impressive powerful runner with the ball, and in one of those matches he scored an absolute screamer, we need someone to do that for us a few times a season

That said, given the choice, I'd rather have Wijnaldum and Martins Indi for Saints, and all combined would make the squad much too Dutch.

Think our Centre backs and Strikers are sorted for next year. We have our first choice pairing sorted. Then Yoshida, Gardos as backup with Bertrand able to play in the back 3. So can't see us investing in Indi.

True but we need to try to sign a Fonte replacement at some point because Yoshi and Gardos will only ever be back up. If a good centre back who fits the profile we want is available then I can see us having a go.

Other than that, I think our target will be an offensive midfielder and replacements for any leavers.

We could do with another reliable keeper too.

This. He'll be our next boss.

I guess you mean Frank de Boer and not his twin brother Ronald... ;)

Vilhena is too often a precipitate player who loses the ball too easily and forgets his defensive duties. He's still young though and I believe a coach like RK is able to handle him, to make sure there's more discipline in his game. He's free to leave so he's cheap to get but I doubt that he will add anything to the Saints early on. Like Clasie he's physically not equipped for the PL, it would be better for him to leave for Italy or Spain.

Apparently Leicester are interested in Vilhena.

@KuipTalk: Leicester City is seriously interested in Tonny Vilhena, and leading the race in signing the midfielder, who is a free agent this summer.
