Saints V Palace 4th Round Match Thread

Er, you have just given the best possible reason why going out is good for us.

Or perhaps 'we now have to concentrate on 2 competitions while the teams around us can focus on the league' sounds like a good position to be in?

Presumably you want us to finish eighth or something.

Because getting into Europe would only mean lots more of those simply horrid football matches. I mean, how dreadful to play football matches because that just means injuries. I wish we didn't have to play any at all. Is there anything else we can knocked out of?

A short-sighted view that I'll never get on board with.

What an opportunity for a side to progress in this cup now. What a shame it isn't us.

Agreed, very disappointing performance and result. Not one of them played well.

Well, I've been back an hour and we've just polished off our takeaway curry. I feel strangely deflated. I can't even say we were unlucky to lose. After 5 goals in 25 minutes I was expecting a lot more. We were very sloppy today, passes falling short, Palace players first to the loose ball. Not enough quality or ambition. We had our pockets picked by a team that wanted it more.

Ate least it wasn't a league game.

Once again this was simply a logical argument. If the priority is 4th, and all our closest rivals only have to play league matches, then playing cup matches as well as league matches puts us at a disadvantage. Do you disagree with this?

You sound like you have had a difficult day buddy :( need a hug?

We play in the fa cup every year , it's been 11 since we played in Europe I know which one I'd like a run in !

We played the maximum - the absolute maximum - number of domestic League and cup matches up to last weekend and still got to third.

So no, I dont agree.

Us getting knocked out of the cup is not some magic solution for us to finish fourth.

That is not the question I put to you. Up until now, all the teams around us in the league also played the maximum possible fixtures, therefore there was no advantage for anybody. Now however, all our direct league competition have been eliminated, therefore if we had stayed in, it would have given us a disadvantage in our league campaign.

If we had won I would have been happy, but I'm not that bothered that we are out, sorry if this upsets you guys.

Looking at those goals again, FF could have done better with the first and third imo.
yeah, Forster could have done better, but that defence was atrocious.

CP was cutting through our defenders like a hot knife through butter on each goal. (really missed Wanyama, Alderweireld and Schneiderlin today)

F*cking typical isn't it! Could just cry  sooooo p*ssed off right now. Not even just because of the loss but because of the fact that City, Chelsea and Spurs are ALL out!!! If we'd managed to stay in then we would surely have been top couple of odds to win the f*cking thing! :x :x

Arrrrgh can we please stop being so sh*t in the cups some day! :x Pretty please! Feels like a long time since the away win at Arsenal in the league cup :(

Really really annoyed by that. Good god. But grudgingly, fair play to Pards and Palace, was a very good win for them, and Its better than going out to Sheffield Utd or mothf*cking Sundersh*te that's for sure.

And, at least Spurs, Chelsea and City are all out, especially Chelsea after Mourinho's comments about losing to Bradford and Poch's attitude to the cups.

Anyway, the team can now focus on the top four, much to the delight of the strange fans that really wanted us to not win any silverware in favour of tricky champions league qualifier against an eastern european team. And just a point to those that think the CL is the bees knees, looking at our cup record historically, and especially when we're supposed to be the dog's b*llocks this season, how do you think we'll do when we get to the CL? I bet you, that we will go out like a damp squib. Saints just don't do cups!

But on the bright side look at the opportunity it gave you to use emoticons.

I answered the question you asked. It's not relevant.

Our manager would have wanted to progress in this competition, so I'll take his judgement over what's best for our club over yours. He certainly doesn't belive in gutlessly bottling it out of competitions like some on here.

Congratulations to Palace on a fully deserved win. They played the perfect game to beat us. 4 Forwards that we failed to cope with and the determination to win was good (for a neutral) to see. Tadic and Elia were not allowed to play by the Palace defenders. Nice to hear the applause for Jason Puncheon.

As for the Ref, $h!t£

The real 'downer' for me was the injury to Long.

No you didn't, but as its irrelevant, I won't press the point.

I've heard that answer from you many times before, and it's a good one - "koeman says so, end of discussion" - fair enough, I'm sure he would, no manager wants to lose. I didn't want us to lose either, and I'm not glad we did.

I guess many just rate the FA cup more highly than I do. I understand your need to shut the fishies up, I'm just more interested in (hopefully) watching the best teams in Europe play at St Marys.

I went today but I can't say I'm that bothered about the results. I remember saying to my mate with 10 minutes left that it was decision time, either two goals or no goals. Basically I wanted anything but a replay from today's game. At least now we don't have to worry about players getting injured in cup games and affecting our league form. It was a shame to lose Long today, hopefully he is back soon.

You can see Pardew has got Palace looking a much better team from the shambles we beat on Boxing Day. On the other hand if your making Chamakh look good you're not doing something right. We looked lacklustre to be honest, like the players weren't really that interested in the game. A few poor misplaced passes and some very dodgy defending first half. Forster didn't really look with it either.

Totally agree. palace were more adventurous attacking and had more options. Our midfield was poor.

I sense that there is sarcasm here, but I can't quite work out the nuances...

Oh hang on! Very good!!! This is what I will do isn't it!?? Lolol etc...

Cork was a waste of space today and didn't look interested , Harrison Reed did well in those three away wins, I would rather have seen him

disappointing but at least it gives Ronald something to give the players a kick up the backside about for the next few weeks, never thought i would say this in 54 years of support but rather have lost today than next Sunday

That is probably selfish as i was there in 76

Stupid thing to say. Even if we get top 4 have a play off before we get a pay day. No trophies at all still.

Being knocked out of the FA Cup doesn't make that any more likely. Just mental, f uck ing mental, that people think it does.

Think of all those matches we'll have to play. It's going to cripple us, I tells ya. CRIPPLE US.

Is there any way we can play maybe one game a month or something?

We could be in the 5th round of the FA Cup with the only two above us out, and looking forward to a league cup semi final next week, yet people are pleased we can now concentrate on the league? Barmy

Our fans are showing a real small club mentality with wanting to get knocked out. We finish fifth we are signing up for mid table at most next season as Europa league means we will have so many games.

I know does any of our fans actually like watching us play football? Maybe we should stop training too.

There are no trophies for winning the FA Cup 4th round either. The trophy comes from winning 6 consecutive FA Cup games. If you win 6 consecutive Champions League games you win the qualifier and your group.

We would have had a good chance with Chelsea, city and spurs out. Rather than competing with them over next 20 odd games. We will never win champions league so more chance of trophy in fa cup. Plus, semi at wembley and we saw in 2003 what a day out like that can do to club. Had our highest ever attendances year after.

I'm going to sit back and enjoy the super human strength our ultra energised team will have as we power into third place like the Brownlee brothers on a speedboat.

Good idea! Make sure you remind me every time we concede a goal or lose a game how we could have won the FA cup but didn't.

Bad day at the office. I think last week against Newcastle we got away with having to play a weakened midfield but boy did we miss the power and strength of Morgan and Wanyama today. It was men and boys out there at times. Defensively we looked vulnerable but I think that had a lot to do with us missing the shield provided by Morgan and Big Vic. I'm afraid JWP, Davis, Tadic and Cork were far too lightweight and no match for the pace and power of Palace.

Haven't we sold out for the last 6 home games? We don't need a cup run this year to get people through the gates, decent football every week will do that by itself.

I would rate our chances of matching Arsenal, Spuds and United over 16 game much higher than winning 6 consecutive games. A cup is strike one and you're out, it would be like if after the Man City game that was the end of the League campaign.

Each game is as good as 50/50. When Chelsea and City are losing in their own back yard to Boro and Bradford, anything can happen. So from that point of view there is a 1 in 64 chance of winning the Cup if you enter at the 3rd round. If you can find me a bookies offering 64/1 on Saints to finish top 4 please let me know because I'm definitely having £50 on that.

So cup games are worked out as a succession of 50/50s but league games aren't?

Yep, that makes absolute perfect sense. Well done.

Great first 20 minutes then what the f**k was the rest of the 70 all about ?.

Gaping holes in the middle of the back for Palace to easily run into, and my 5 year old son who I took too his first game can run faster than Pelle ! (really disappointed by the level of effort he put in today). Elia looks leaps and bounds above Tadic at the moment, why is he now putting in such limp performances ?.

It does indeed, I'm glad we finally agree.

I'm sure you will agree also that, using this logic, every team will score the same number of points for the remainder of the season. I'm looking forward to our Champions League campaign with great excitement.
