Saxon Posted 24 January, 2015 Share Posted 24 January, 2015 why are we so abysmal in cup comeptitions. pathetic F*cking typical isn't it! Could just cry sooooo p*ssed off right now. Not even just because of the loss but because of the fact that City, Chelsea and Spurs are ALL out!!! If we'd managed to stay in then we would surely have been top couple of odds to win the f*cking thing! :x Arrrrgh can we please stop being so sh*t in the cups some day! Pretty please! Feels like a long time since the away win at Arsenal in the league cup Really really annoyed by that. Good god. But grudgingly, fair play to Pards and Palace, was a very good win for them, and Its better than going out to Sheffield Utd or mothf*cking Sundersh*te that's for sure. And, at least Spurs, Chelsea and City are all out, especially Chelsea after Mourinho's comments about losing to Bradford and Poch's attitude to the cups. Anyway, the team can now focus on the top four, much to the delight of the strange fans that really wanted us to not win any silverware in favour of tricky champions league qualifier against an eastern european team. And just a point to those that think the CL is the bees knees, looking at our cup record historically, and especially when we're supposed to be the dog's b*llocks this season, how do you think we'll do when we get to the CL? I bet you, that we will go out like a damp squib. Saints just don't do cups!

If winning a trophy because every other decent team puts out a second string team/has been knocked out makes you happy then fair enough. The Kraken Posted 24 January, 2015 Share Posted 24 January, 2015 Ridiculous comment. Indeed. Akin to saying "we can't afford another league game". It's also the complete opposite of what the manager wants, so clearly simo knows better than Ronald Koeman> RK looked absolutely livid at full time. Each to their own, but simo displays all the traits of someone who is going to end up absolutely disappointed about everything he hopes for the football team. As far as I'm concerned it's a completely daft opinion, and he's welcome to it. Big opportunity missed. But at least we gave it a good go, so no complaints in that regard. Yoshi back may help us, I think we need an option to Pelle (especially with Long out and no imminent return for JRod).

Saint Fan CaM Posted 24 January, 2015 Share Posted 24 January, 2015 Oh well, not too miserable I missed that. Did their supporters take over the Northam again nullifying our vocal fans? Pretty usual fayre from Saints to be honest and with injuries this was always going to be a banana skin. Incredible that so many top teams went out to lower league opposition and fair play to them...that's the FA Cup. Looking forward to seeing MOTD as a neutral for all the other games this evening. Onwards and well...onwards I suppose with the league. Koeman really needs to think carefully about the squad make-up now...he's seen what can happen when we're up against lower half teams who want to scrap and win. CanadaSaint Posted 24 January, 2015 Share Posted 24 January, 2015 If there's a silver lining to what, for me, is a very dark cloud, it's that our main rivals for positions 3 and 4 (bar Spurs) are still in a demanding competition that they have a very good chance of winning. As well as hitting fixture congestion and picking up injuries. After Churchill lost the 1945 election his wife said "Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise." Churchill responded "Right now it's very effectively disguised." I feel the same way about losing to Palace today.

CWD Posted 24 January, 2015 Share Posted 24 January, 2015 Sometimes you have to credit the other team - Palace were the better side and deserved to win. Well done Pardew, out though Koeman today. That's much more satisfying than going out limply as we did last year. If we beat Swansea we'll all forget about this, and then Schniederlin, Wanyama and Toby will be back. Saint Charlie Posted 24 January, 2015 Share Posted 24 January, 2015 I think players struggle to get excited about cups, especially not until the semi final sort of stage. Goatboy Posted 24 January, 2015 Share Posted 24 January, 2015 (edited) Just back from the game... and what a disappointing performance and result. Firstly though, well played to Palace. I thought they were excellent in the first half. Pressed us high up the pitch and put together some good movement and passing in the final third. Thoroughly deserved to go into half time in the lead and, but for a couple of excellent saves from Forster, could have easily been 5-2 up. Chamakh out muscled our midfield when he dropped a little deeper and Saha's pace troubled even the usually unflappable Bertrand. Sanogo looks like being a good loan for them and fair play to Pardew, he has them looking like a much more effective team. Onto Saints: If I was Jack Cork I would be taking the opportunity presented by my early substitution to rush down the tunnel and sign that contract. On today's showing there won't be a queue of clubs making better offers. Off the pace from the start, lost almost every 50-50 and gave it away regularly. Sideways passing and a fear of getting forward and offering something in the final third. Poor day Richard;) He wasn't alone though, poor day all round for Davis, Ward Prowse (though looked a little better when he dropped deeper in the second half) and Clyne. The best part of Dusan's game today was his outstanding performance as ballboy. He was excellent in getting the ball back quickly to any Palace player dawdling over a throw in or free kick. Good work mate. Now if someone could just give you a bit of a gee-up when you've got possession of the ball it would be great. Too casual. Too slow. Too wasteful. I thought Pelle did ok today (after getting what looked like a nasty knock in the first few minutes. Chuffed he got his goal after the work he has put in over the last few games but other than that, didn't really present much of a threat. Lacked anybody making runs off of him though so had a bit of a thankless afternoon. The bright spot for me today was Elia. He's much more of a natural wideman than Mane. Takes up some good positions, worked much more effectively with Bertrand and always looked to be direct and positive. Worked hard and never gave up. Would have scored a screamer near the end too if it wasn't for an excellent save by the Palace keeper. I like what I've seen so far. All in all, I don't have too many complaints about the result today. Looking forward to having Morgan and Vic back and I hope Long's injury isn't too bad (looked more dangerous with him on the pitch today). Finally, a quick word to the (sh*te) ref: When you have got a simple decision horrendously wrong, giving a soft free kick to the hard done by team shortly after play restarts, doesn't make you look like a fair ref, balancing things out. It makes you look like an even more incompetent knob. Upwards and onwards. At least we can (all) concentrate on the league. Pointless competition that was ****ed the moment the FA allowed United to enter World Club competition in 2000 (or whenever) This. It wasn't the fans who've lost interest in the FA Cup who are responsible for its demise, they're simply reacting to: 1) Revenue from European football and the Premier League meaning that those two competitions command priority 2) The knock-on effect being that the biggest clubs throw out their second string players 3) The knock-on effect of that being that anyone who does win the cup tends to be thought of as only having done so because the bigger clubs weren't trying 4) The fact that four teams qualify for the Champions League, meaning that as many as 6 or 7 clubs at the top all have bigger fish to fry. 5) The aforementioned precedent set by Manchester United who clearly prioritised building their global fanbase above respecting the FA Cup. A precedent that made the cup's lost glory and mystique pretty irretrievable
rallyboy Posted 24 January, 2015 Share Posted 24 January, 2015 He didn't cost us the game, but what a shocking ref! Mr Moss is welcome to make mistakes, we all do, and he certainly does, but to be blatantly inconsistent is a sin. 1st half - Palace player chops down winger, not even a word from the ref. 2nd half - Targett chops down winger on same spot in identical manner, his first foul - yellow card. I know people on here like to defend refs for a laugh - good luck with this bloke! He had an inconsistent shocker, as demonstrated by the loudest cheer of the afternoon when he finally gave a free kick.

trousers Posted 24 January, 2015 Share Posted 24 January, 2015 (edited) Just back from the game. We gave as good as we got in the first 10 minutes then went into "cup mode"...i.e. we took our foot off the gas whereas Palace looked threatening with every attack. It's game like this that remind us how much we miss Wanyama and Schneiderlin - without them we stand off attackers and constantly lose the midfield battles. That said, Long came on and we started to threaten. I feel we'd have got a result if he hadn't got injured. Haven't seen any post match reports yet so not sure what the injury was but my initial reaction was a cracked rib (?) Davis had an off day (too many stray passes) and Tadic was largely ineffectual and seemed disinterested at times. Too many of our through balls into the final 3rd kept finding one of their defenders rather than one of our strikers ( until Long came on). Elia probably our best player although didn't create much - it was "one of those games" all round. Crazy results elsewhere. And Spurs and Pompey lost..... every cloud.....
