Fairplay if you thought that taking Bertrand on loan would be equal to or an upgrade on Shaw, but I believe the vast majority on here didn't, as can be seen in the below thread:

Hypochondriac:

Rubbish signing.

We're such a knowledgeable lot on here.

I was happy :-)

"Was on my wish list at the start of the window :-)

Surprised people are ****ed at this? It's a solid signing, a player with Premier League and Champions League experience"

Really hope Ryan stays - he has been a fantastic surprise this season - didn't see that coming at all and much respect to our scouting network. he seems happy and by all accounts has been fed up with being passed from pillar to post by Chelsea - not sure what agreements were made pre loan - does anyone have any ideas - was it a loan with option to buy?

He was great with my kid before the fiorst home match of the season - seemend really happy and settled here already.

Aye, option to buy included. Think it was £10m(ish), appreciate if anyone can confirm this.

I was happy enough too...

"Decent enough signing for me. Liverpool wanted him so good enough for a mid-table side this season. "

I think mining the big clubs rosters of players who can't get a crack with the first team, a la Bertrand, is a pretty good strategy. There are some pretty good players languishing on the bench or on loan somewhere with these big teams.

That's why I think landing Guidetti from Citeh for £2m would be good business.

You are looking for talented players, who want to PLAY in the top league every week. Plus, they come at a price Southampton can afford. Insert them into the system, and with a little luck and some good coaching, they flourish. In addition, with these type of players, they feel grateful to be given the chance and then that builds loyalty to the club.

I think Bertrand signs. He wants to be here and has already stated as such.

I convinced if Koeman doesn't get the 4 out of contract to renew their contracts and commit to the future, he won't think twice over new job offers. They have to sign and show that they believe in Koeman and the future of the club.

Who are the 4? I make J-Rod and Cork to be out of contract. Both have had zero impact on this campaign.

Clyne is a contract extension, he is still ours, but there will be more emphasis on the need to sell if he doesn't extend. We will make very good money though.

Bertrand and Toby are loans, if they sign great, if not then seek others out.

Compared to the situation he inherited, and the squad we have now, why would Koeman look to leave? On the basis of Jack Cork and J-Rod not signing, and two loans not becoming permanent ?!

JRod & Clyne's contracts finish at the same time.

So he was quite happy to have the ability to replace the five who left last summer, but all of a sudden, when he might have the opportunity to dabble in the transfer markets for other players that might be on his wish list, he will have lost the appetite for it?

Hope we keep Toby and Bertrand first and foremost. Clyne wants out I understand to a London club, but it would be great to keep him. Morgan would be fantastic to keep, but I think he will end up going and with Reed looking really good I'm relaxed about it. Cork I like and hope he stays, but there are u-21 players waiting for their chance so no disaster if he goes. Also hope we sign Elia...real deal player who appears to love it here.

I'm not sure he was awful, but the main point I want to pick up here is in bold..

that was " perhaps it's more the system than the player sometimes " I couldn't agree more (Minty / Unbelievable Jeff)

I've seen good players leave (Saints / and other clubs) and find it difficult to settle in their new team. Sometimes they were simply a big fish in a small pond, but moving to a " bigger club " changes things.

When the other club plays a different formation, or a striker doesn't have the wing service he once had, or the midfield player to give him those special passes - he becomes less reliable.

Most recently, biggest surprise is Shaw at MU. LVP seems determined to ditch 4-4-2 (the successful Fergie set-up for almost two decades), and wants to use his 3-5-1 formation, with the result that Shaw isn't involved nearly as much as he was in his time with Saints, (in the games I've seen him in)...he looks barely a shadow of his former self.

I don't think Rickie Lambert became a worse player after just 6 weeks summer holiday, but having bought him (and Lallana) Brendan failed to comprehend that both were successful at SMS simply because they had played together for 5 years, and yet he rarely plays them in the same game, and has often used Lambert as a sub for Lallana - instead of putting them together, yet they still play in the same league.

Rodgers troubles' seem to multiply when he still wants to use Joe Allen (was OK at Swansea maybe) and can't decide if he can really accomodate Coutinho in the side..... and and I'm the only one on the Planet who thinks that Jordan Henderson is vastly over-rated?

Players are successful because of the team they play in, and the successful formations they use, (and probably also the manager who believes in him). Beyond that they can be like fish out of water.

The final result is; the right players who go to the wrong team. Carroll at Liverpool, Torres at Chelsea, Bale was the "real thing" at Spuds, but ......whatever did Soldado do for a living before he went there?

Morgan not even mentioned by RK? Basically gone in the summer then as we all expected.

Morgan signed a new contract last year didn't he? so a new contract for him isn't really a talking point. Ronald was talking about those players who need to sign new contracts soon. Having said that Morgan will I'm 99% sure be gone this summer.

I think Koeman may well review his position if we were to finish top four and still lost Alderwiereld, Schneiderlin, Clyne et al. He could become disenchanted knowing that team performance is irrelevant as money is the prime motivator.

It does feel different this year compared to last in terms of our ability to retain players.

Almost as if we have grown up and proved ourselves capable of dealing with any situation.

I also like Koemans comments and openness, which is in stark contrast to that scheming cockroach Pochettino.

Obviously it's all calculated and planned by the club to make all this public but it also puts the ball firmly in the players court.

I think we've proven to everyone, fans, players etc that we can overcome a player leaving. That we can push on and improve. That we hold our core values very highly. It's really up to the players now if they want to be part of it or not. Money aside they must all use last summer and this season as an example that the grass isn't always greener. It must be in their thoughts. Obviously the agents will be pushing for moves.. It's how those parasites make their millions after all.

Finally, it is also refreshing to hear the manager talk of the future and planning for next season. The spectre of him being poached is always there but he's certainly more forthright and seems on the level. I like that.

All of this.

I'm not sure he was awful, but the main point I want to pick up here is in bold. This is the single most important thing IMO. Pochettino started it, Koeman has developed and tweaked it, but players are coming into a solid system, hence why when Morgan and Victor are out, whilst we obviously lose something, we don't just fall to pieces. The system is designed to do a lot of the work... individual ability is the cherry on the icing on top.

That, coupled with Koeman himself clearly being a strong motivator and man-manager, and the benefit of hindsight of last summer, means I am less worried about losing ANY player than I ever was at any time supporting Saints.

As much as we loved Matt Le Tiss, we are now in a strong position so completely opposite to that time where we relied on the individual. It's why young players, in defence and midfield especially, can come in and develop further with Saints than at most other clubs, where more reliance is placed on their individual ability. In attack it is slightly different because more individual flair is needed to create and take opportunities, but still, the system helps too.

Good post.......

Perhaps, but he has two more years left on his contract so there is nothing that needs to be settled before the season ends. And where we finish likely affects whether he wants to stay.

Thanks, I thought he was out of contract in the summer of 2016. No need to sell this summer then.

You believe that he's too naive to understand that top players here will naturally be in demand by the top clubs and that they would leave us if they were offered double their wages at one of the glory clubs? Of course, the same thing applies to Koeman himself and I'm not naive enough to believe that if he was offered the Barcelona/Real Madrid/Bayern Munich job that he wouldn't go, when the time is right, that is. At the moment, I think that Koeman would like to get us to a certain level and would regard leaving before as unfinished business. But if he manages to gain us CL football, he will definitely be in the frame for pretty well any managerial position.

Of course money is the prime motivator, especially if it is allied to a genuine step-up in the club hierarchy too.

IMO no additional striker does leave us a little light unless:

- Long suddenly finds a PL level first touch and composure level

- Koeman thinks Mane or Elia could do a job as a main striker (neither have enough physical presence IMO).

- Jay Rod isn't that far away

- Ditto Gallagher

- The Club don't see this season as our only real chance to finish top 4.
