We finish 4th, Arsenal win Champions League

Hatch

Recommended Posts

The rules have changed since Spurs missed out after finishing 4th.

There's now a maximum of 5 teams from one league.

The only case that results in 4th NOT getting Champions League is if a Premier League team wins the Champions League and finishes outside the Top 4, AND a Premier League team wins the Europa League and finishes outside the Top 4.

It's possible, but unlikely. The bigger concern is getting through the qualifier for the 4th place finish.

yes, dont understand this 4th place talk!

Fair enough for the top 2, perhaps Chelsea and City will be too much to catch but who is supposed to be replacing us in thrid then?

My heart prediction is :

City

Chelsea

Southampton

Arsenal

Man Utd

Tottenham

Liverpool

My head says:

Chelsea

City

Man Utd

Tottenham

Arsenal

Liverpool

Southampton

Redslo has been working very hard and doing blogs about this kind of thing but nobody bothers to read them :(

http://redsloscf.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/european-qualification-rules-for.html

Nice article, except the apostrophe in Champions (it should be after the s not before it, unless there is only one Champion in the League, which would be a pretty crappy tournament) and the use of EFFECTS, not the correct "AFFECTS" on Saints.

You can tell it's good if I'm only picking holes in the grammar - and I've also seen something about the FA Cup Runners Up not getting a Europa League place any more too, FWIW. More of this stuff please! :)

Your head is irrational then. We've got 20 winnable matches, more than half of which are against bottom half sides, and 2 tricky away games at City and Chelsea.

RedSLO is American. Dodgy spelling and grammar are in his blood.

Though if you have read them then you will find this:

"I have tried to pull this information together from various sources, but I am not 100 percent sure I am right about everything."

basically because its all bloody confusing and not as clear-cut as it used to be or should be.

I know where he's from, they're not American English differences though. Anyway, I stopped being That Annoying Grammar Bloke in about 2008 on here, so moving on...

Anyway, Page 10 here has the confirmation about Cup Runners Up that Redslo was looking for (along with all the other rules in a none-too-helpful format). Ignore the first couple of pages being in Spanish, the rest is English.

http://kassiesa.net/uefafiles/2015-18-uefa-access-list-explanations.pdf

It says:

14/15 Domestic cup winners qualifying for the 15/16 CL via the 14/15 domestic championship will be replaced in the 15/16 EL by the next best-placed team in the final 14/15 domestic championship rankings (not by the cup runner-up any more).

A load of (well, 5) scenarios are also included in the bottom of this document.

so if Spurs or EVerton win Europa League , which this year gets a Champion League place, there could be 6 English teams in the Champions League

Seems unlikely to be allowed to me.

cant see the TV companies (and they are the only ones that matter here) having a problem with more Premier League sides making the CL. In fact I'm surprised they haven't wangled it before so that more Prem sides made it in each year.

Thank you for the kind remarks. I checked the UEFA web site and they don't use an apostrophe at all. Effect and affect are my Achilles heel. I never get them right as multiple secretaries have pointed out over the years. Since my secretary doesn't proof my blog entries, that issue will continue to affect or effect my blog.

My head tells me we only have 16 winnable matches--at least in the league.

No the maximum is five. If Arsenal wins the champions League, but finishes 5th and Everton wins the Europa League and finishes 12th, the fourth place team in the premier league will be bumped down to the Europa league.

As pointed out elsewhere ... 16 games.

We didn't fare too well against lowly WBA, Villa or Burnley, but yes winnable for sure.

The Liverpool and Spurs home games are going to be crucial, hopefully their good runs will be over by then!!

You're right that UEFA never use the apostrophe, presumably for branding reasons, but it should be after the s nevertheless.

Things affect other things, and the outcome is the effect. A is before E, easiest way to remember if you're not sure.

Hmm, not really. The Champions don't own or possess the League - it is a League OF (or for) the Champions. So no apostrophe is perfectly fine. UEFA's Champions League I'll give you. But looks stupid.

Back in the days when I worked in newspapers (not that glam at all) I had a two day argument about Ascot Ladies Day for the same reason. I did, eventually, win. True story.

I for one think we'd all agree that the best outcome would be us to finish 3rd, United or Spurs 4th (), Everton win to EL, Arsenal to win CL

Liverpool to win nothing.:D

Saints win F.A Cup. :adore:

Relieved to hear that anyone winning Europa league spot won't take the 4th spot away. Couldnt bear the thought of the

scousers (Liverpool not Everton ) getting in via back door route at our expense..

Still hate that failure in CL leads to entry into Europa for some.

Try the mnemonic rAVEN

Affect - Verb Effect - Noun

Usually, but not always. Effect can also be a verb. You could, for example, effect some changes that had a positive result, such as building a new training centre which resulted in us getting into the CL.

I just gave him a simple rule where he would have been right 9 times out of 10 and now you've gone and confused him again.

That's my job in life

I think it's still to early to get excited about where we finish but there's no harm in letting our minds wander for a bit. I wonder at what stage we can really take the prospect seriously, 4 games to go? That would be after the home game with Spurs. Beat them and maybe, just maybe, we shall be in with a chance.

Teams fighting relegation can be harder to beat than top teams

Not much chance of getting into Europe according to Talksport's super computer predictor. Liverpool get that 4th spot!

http://talksport.com/football/supercomputer-reveals-final-pl-table-and-without-transfer-deals-150122133412?

The return of Sturridge and him linking with Mario will be crucial. And they need to cope with European games. And they need to keep Lovren out of the side. It won't be easy for them.
