9 wins away ??

He's based the 9 wins on needing to get more points than the team in 5th. He then goes on to say: The average number of points the team finishing fourth has actually secured over the last five seasons is a little higher at 72, meaning an extra victory would be required to hit that tally.

Good trolling from the echo!

Last season, the top three teams each lost 6 games and the fourth team lost seven games. This season we have already lost 6 games which is more than any other team in the top five at present. We are where we are because our ratio of wins to draws is better than the others, Saints having only drawn three games so far all season.

Nine wins to get a minimum of 69 points sounds good but it may not be enough if we lose most of the others. We really can't afford to lose many more because the teams around us will all have similar ambitions. You can't put an absolute points total on the target as you don't know what the other teams will achieve but less than 74 points and I'd be just a bit worried.

This time last year with the same record we'd have been 6th. Don't get complacent.58c58fa9b611cf0653bc718863000b91.jpg

What is also interesting is that the 3 teams that went down were lying 12th, 17th, 20th after 22 matches. So I'll remind my my Everton-supporting mate not to relax!

ha, I noticed that Norwich was sitting pretty at 12th there.

another tidbit.. Liverpool had 43 points after 22 matches last season. Saints have 42 points after 22 matches now.

I would love a "2013/14 Liverpool style season finish" for the Saints this year and finish with 84 points. (Liverpool incredibly got 41 out of 48 points in their final 16 matches last season!)
