"Still..?"

Unbelievable Jeff

Recommended Posts

Gary Neville: "I still expect Southampton to drop below Tottenham, Arsenal, United..."

Thierry Henry: "...Still?"

Gary Neville: "I'm getting less confident by the week, I like the way they play, the way they're coached...

Thierry Henry: "...just the teams they beat recently, it wasn't an easy task, Everton, United, drawing with Chelsea."

Looks to me like Thierry believes. Always liked him.

Yep, it's going to be very hard to crack the top 4. Our form will have to continue to be immense, for the remainder of the season. Looking at what we have done so far, you would say it is possible. It just seems so hard to believe we could do it! It's going to be an exciting couple of months, tobesure!

What worries me is that this is Saints playing excellently whereas other teams are under-performing and still keeping up with us. Spurs and United especially seem to have a knack of winning in-spite of some poor performances. Anyone betting on 2-1 Spurs with a deflected Eriksen goal, off the post in the last minute is probably a billionaire by now.

Arsenal put in the kind of performance at City yesterday I don't think we're quite capable of at the moment. It's games like that which lead me to fear we aren't quite there yet, despite being a very good team.

I'd take that now without too much feeling of loss.

From Neville's perspective, he's got to make a call either way. Saying that Saints won't make the top four is a far easier call for him right now than sticking his neck out and saying they definitely will make the top four.

Personally, I hope he's wrong, not only for our sakes, but also to see him have to admit it year after year. Don't think anyone will top Hansen though.

Don't really understand this mentality. I'll be gutted if we don't make the Champions League. We've shown we're good enough over 22 games, why not over 38? Will we ever have a better chance?

It's because it's the way the league is and seemingly always will be. What I find interesting now, is that it in't a big 7 so much now, but a 6 with Everton having dropped off. I know they spent £28m on a player, but the vultures are circling and not sure that they will be able to keep their best players.

I'd be gutted to, but pragmatic. To my mind, we've got 4 big games left where we will likely/definitely be under dogs - Chelsea/Man City away, and Liverpool/Spurs home. That's not to belittle any of the other games especially the likes of WHU and Everton, as there are no easy games in this league. People say that our squad is small, but I think that they do us a disservice. However, I am not sure we can take many more injuries as well as the ACN/AC.

I really want us to finish top four. I understand that we will probably get slaughtered in the champion's league but we have a manager now who can make a decent game of it. We've got a real opportunity this year because an upturn in our results has coincided with some proper mediocrity from the usual top six (City / Chelsea aside). These circumstances come around about once every 50 years and we have to make the most of it.

I don't wish to get too premature on how we might fare in the CL if we are to make it this season, but I really don't see why we would be "slaughtered" by most teams. The league comprises the very best teams from each country's top flight, as well as some teams not as illustrious and also teams from lesser footballing power countries. We recently drew with Chelski and have fared pretty well against a couple of CL teams pre-season, indicating that on the day we should be able to give a good account of ourselves against most teams. OK, the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are naturally a cut above most, but even Celtic beat Barcelona a couple of years ago (thanks to Wanyama). Would our defence be less effective than when they face the stars of the PL, who are generally as good as their counterparts in Europe?

Either would be great! Wouldn't we get both though if we finished fourth?

I'm not sure. Finish 4th and get knocked out of the first home/away leg and that might be curtains. I've tried looking this up and gave up because my head started hurting too much.

From reading these it appears to me that 4th place gets you into the play-off round where the winners go through to the Champions League group phase and the losers go into the Europa Cup. So 4th would guarantee Europa League as a minimum plus an extra home/away tie. At least, that's how it was for this season.:suspicious:

Agreed, we've maintained this level for a long time now. If we lost a CL qualifier would that still guarantee a Europa League spot? Can't remember how it works

OK, then 4th is clearly better than 5th. I wasnt aware of this.

I pretty much agree with this TBH

If this season we can hold our own against the likes of chelsea and arsenal (only really City have outplayed us IMO) then why should we be worried about champions league qualifiers ?

Ok, it wont be easy but surely over two legs we are able to compete against the likes of Lille, Malmo or Celtic ?

Not sure that that is correct. Two points a game is CL qualifying form. I cannot think of too many occasions when all the "top six" had that form over a season. If we maintain this form we would qualify in any season.

Anybody know what the financial rewards of finishing 4th in the Prem & gaining Champions League TV Matches?

Here is last seasons prize money

Looking at the league money I'd say we're well placed to pick up what Everton roughly received, so about £85M this year!

it's the standard " media experts " formula.... trying to safeguard their own reputations, and the " good name " of the bigger clubs

Always speak well of the Big Four, but if Saints beat one of them, we were lucky ....and they played badly.....if we don't win, the balloon has burst and we're on the way down.

What will they say (I wonder) ... if we are still in top four come May?

We will finish on 72pts if our points per game average from the season so far is applied to the last 16 games which I think after 22 games isn't a bad mean to base our predictions on.

The thing I don't understand (please enlighten moi) is why everyone keeps quoting betting odds like they are a fundamental basis for the future as all the betting companies do is adjust the odds as a reaction to the money that's being placed on them. These odds vary daily based on newspaper story's, injuries and signings that occur at the time which then incite people to bet a certain way. For instance we were nailed on fighting for relegation at the beginning of the season according to the same sources quoted above and reflected in the bookmakers odds.

They can see the future as well as the lookout on the Titanic can see icebergs.

Top 4 will be extremely tough for us yes based purely on squad depth and from my perspective we have stopped getting goals out of Graziano but we are currently better placed than Arsenal/ManU/Spurs/Liverpool currently based on fixtures and points, its always better to be in front rather than reclaim points especially when your fixture list is about to get hectic.

Muppet Alert July 2014 - Sky Bet Football Trader Jamie Munro said: "The combination of their mass sales and the fact that we’ve seen more money on them than any other club in our relegation betting has forced us to slash their odds considerably.

"It's unprecedented to cut a Premier League club's relegation odds by more than half without a ball being kicked but the betting in our Transfer Specials suggests the situation is only going to get worse.

"Schneiderlin and Rodriguez have been well backed to join Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham and there's little to suggest reinforcements are on the way, while Ronald Koeman's lack of Premier League experience is also cause for concern."

Did anyone on here bet on; Saints to finish Top Four ..at 80-1 , at the beginning of August (after the Fab Five) had jumped ship and were were amongst the favourites to be relegated.?
