andoru Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 "Disregarding City & Chelsea, we're top of the damn table." This was a comment from an Indian fan of Manchester United I came across earlier today. Apparently Saints are invisible. Maybe he was viewing the table on Excel and the row was collapsed or something. Probably the most stupid football-related comment I've read in years though. Why not disregard all the teams below Utd while we're at it? That puts them bottom of the table. Pure idiocy. Some people should stay off the internet. What are the most ridiculous comments you've ever seen made by fans of other teams, especially ones related to Saints in some way?

Beckenham Saint Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 Not from a fan, but Ian Holloway when we beat then in the cup. Wasn't our best performance but we were much better than them that night and the 0-2 scoreline wasn't an unfair reflection - if Pelle had taken all the chances provided to him then it would have been 5 or 6, and he came out after and said we looked nothing like a Premier League team and that we would be struggling in the league. Was chuffed we beat them then and even more pleased to see how poorly he is doing with them in his own League.

That's why it was a stupid comment. You can add 'firesale' to that. Disagree. In the middle of the summer this is exactly the way the club's transfer policy could easily have been logically interpreted. We'd sold many of our better players, looked to be selling even more, and were seemingly replacing them with unknown quality. By Aug 1st-8th we had sold: Lambert, Shaw, Lallana, Lovren and Chambers (oh and allowed Pochettino to go). Whereas we had only replaced them with Tadic and Pelle (both considered to be potentially good signings, but risky). The consensus, both amongst our fanbase and many football 'experts' was that we had made a net income of £59 million (after signings), were rumoured to be seeing the last of both Morgan and Jay, and appeared to have a significantly weaker overall squad. We were only a week from our first game, and while Krueger was telling us that we would be stronger, many were doubting the intentions of the clubs ownership. Katharina was essentially in a position to re-coop her family's entire stake in the club, and make a 50-100% profit on the invested cash from player sales alone. The media were beginning to using the term 'asset strip' - mostly in articles refuting this scenario, but still in the context that this was a more than plausible explanation for events. (e.g. http://metro.co.uk/2014/07/06/just-what-is-going-on-at-southampton-4788879/, http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/southampton-transfer-news-saints-chairman-ralph-krueger-says-morgan-schneiderlin-and-jay-rodriguez-wont-be-leaving-st-marys-9636016.html, http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/11379498.COMMENT___This_can_t_be_an_asset_stripping_summer_for_Saints/ etc.) Overall, the best evidence that we were not engaged in an asset strip was the appointment of Koeman, and that £19m had been re-invested. 'Those who thought we were being asset stripped didnt know what an asset strip was' - is not a balance comment. There was certainly enough evidence to suggest that the owners were indeed engaged in an exercise in extracting capital from the club. There was not enough evidence to suggest that they were engaged in a full fire-sale, but a perfectly rational interpretation of events was that by early August the club were getting a substantial, but it appeared that they were only reinvesting the minimum needed to try to keep the team in the top flight (where the club's market value is maintained) - it was unknown where the excess capital was going, but one logical interpretation was that the owners were trying to remove capital from the club. Conclusion: Those who thought that we were engaged in an asset stripping exercise were fully aware of what an asset stripping exercise is, and were not being 'stupid'. This was a perfectly logical interpretation of events in early August.

Beckenham Saint Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 Disagree. In the middle of the summer this is exactly the way the club's transfer policy could easily have been logically interpreted. We'd sold many of our better players, looked to be selling even more, and were seemingly replacing them with unknown quality. But the way we were selling made it obvious that it wasn't as bad as everyone made out. We only sold if our valuations were met. We made £90m + on 5 players this summer! We received our highest ever transfer fees for players. It was very obvious we were doing good business. We had hired Ronald Koeman, a manager who came in with a better CV than any manager we had previously hired. If we were in the midst of an asset strip and the board didn't know what they were doing, they would never have been able to convince Koeman to come in and we would have hired someone far less qualified and less competent. Also, just because players like Pelle, Tadic and Alderweireld were unknown qualities to some that doesn't that mean that they were unknown to the club? It's well documented that our scouting policies are very thorough. Just because Dusan Tadic wasn't a household name in England like Adam Lallana doesn't mean he was an unknown quality, he was just unknown to the average UK football fan. Very different. Looking at the summers events as they unfolded from a completely rational point of view, it was so obvious we were going to be fine. We were doing things behind the scenes to expand the staff, the squad, the reputation and the finances of the club, all of which Reed and Krueger kept reiterating. Just because people on here didn't believe them at the time it didn't mean they weren't happening.

Easy and hard teams" Him: "Well yeah, but you're only so high up the table because you've won so many games" Me: " Yes, that is how a league table works"

Miltonaggro Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 The one that jumps out at me, not specifically Saints related but completely nuts in terms of the 'modern fan' is a vivid memory from 1996. I was working on a Saturday along with a mate of mine (also a Saints fan, Shirley boy), listening to the David Mellor football phone in thing he used to do. A call came in from Mo from Dagenham who was an 'angry Blackburn fan'. Blackburn in the previous two seasons bankrolled by Jack Walker had been runners up and winners of the Premier League, and had recently seen Alan Shearer depart to Newcastle. Mo's contribution in a thick London accent was that 'Jack Walker should be sacked, he's killing the club, and doesn't know what he's doing' - I kid you not. After expert probing from Mellor QC it transpired that Mo 'used to be an Arsenal fan' and had just bought a Blackburn shirt with Shearer on the back. Success always attracts floaters, some of them very dense floaters...
Joensuu Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 But the way we were selling made it obvious that it wasn't as bad as everyone made out. We only sold if our valuations were met. We made £90m + on 5 players this summer! We received our highest ever transfer fees for players. It was very obvious we were doing good business. Agreed, we were doing exceptional business, however, this was just evidence that we weren't engaged in a cut-price fire-sale - as of the first week of August getting good fees still supported both theories - reinvestment & growth vs owners removing capital. In both scenarios the board would have wanted to get the best prices when selling players. It should be noted that the quantity sold without many replacements will drive up the prices of those replacements - supporting the notion that the desire was to remove capital. We had hired Ronald Koeman, a manager who came in with a better CV than any manager we had previously hired. If we were in the midst of an asset strip and the board didn't know what they were doing, they would never have been able to convince Koeman to come in and we would have hired someone far less qualified and less competent. Agreed again. This was the best evidence (as I pointed out). However, the debate early August was about how much Koeman was aware of the sales prior to joining. But the way we were selling made it obvious that it wasn't as bad as everyone made out. We only sold if our valuations. See above - this supported both scenarios Also, just because players like Pelle, Tadic and Alderweireld were unknown qualities to some that doesn't that mean that they were unknown to the club? It's well documented that our scouting policies are very thorough. Just because Dusan Tadic wasn't a household name in England like Adam Lallana doesn't mean he was an unknown quality, he was just unknown to the average UK football fan. Very different. In either scenario (reinvestment & growth vs owners removing capital) the clubs scouting processes would be recommending the best players they could have. In early August Pelle and Tadic would have still been considered risky - albeit I'm sure we would have been fairly confident in their abilities. (NB Alderweireld had not joined the club at this point). The fact is, the club were replacing known quantities with partially unknown quantities (and replacing them with less money). This makes for a risky strategy for any club wishing to improve upon their league position, but it makes perfect business sense for any organisation trying to remove capital. With hindsight it is clear to see these risks have paid off. At the time the evidence indicated that the ownership could have had intentions to remove capital from the club. I disagree. Looking at the summers events with the benefit of hindsight, it was so obvious we were going to be fine. Looking at the summers events as they unfolded from a completely rational point of view, you'd have to conclude that the strategy of the owners was at best unclear (not just to people on here, but to neutrals, 'experts' and the media). They might have got Pelle and Tadic on dirt cheap wages for all we knew, and then sold all the players to repay outstanding loans and remove funds from the club. For instance. On July 26th I could see why people thought it was an asset strip - the confusing bit was why if the club was being sold we'd bother to sell the assets first - apparently that was down to the "buyer" wanting to pay less for the core club without the high player contracts or something. It was worrying, and there were grounds for concern AT THAT POINT. Fire sale, however, was always nonsense, just because of the good values we got for the departing players. If this last Summer's events are repeated, then the thickos will forecast an asset-strip, while those who learn the lessons of the past will assume that the club know exactly what they are doing and had already identified more than capable replacements either from outside or inside the club. I listened to Reed and Kreuger and did something unusual, I believed what they said, they gave the overall impression that things were being handled and that we should have faith in what they were appointed to do. The evidence we can all see sitting in 3rd. This was a perfectly logical interpretation of events in early August - I disagree, we had a new world class coach, two of best players in the EDV, a new director who was well regarded in the sports management world, Reed showing us more and more of his attributes he brought and is bringing to SFC, and a sh*t load of money for each want away player. The logical interpretation to me was SFC was building a team to continue it progress up the league. But I have never taken my rosy glasses off and ALWAYS thought we were capable of making CL places (what a dreamer), but dream i will..........CL places are up for grabs! Someone stated how poor this season teams were, they stated only the top 2 are any good. I see it differently again, I see it as there are no pushover teams in the PL, the global glut of players and money that BPL teams can spend ensures we are constantly bringing in better players. The big teams can't buy every good player, there are plenty that will be found and used to strengthen the overall quality of the league. LIV, TOT, EVE, MANU, ARS still have big name players and spent huge amounts but that doesn't guarantee success anymore. SFC, WHU, SWC and NC are showing the strength of the league not its weakness. After a lot of Cup gloating I rose to the bait and said, "Yeah well in 5 years you will be in the Championship!" Which is of course ludicrous because they were actually in League 2 I suppose it doesn't count because I said it not him but I think it's worth a mention. There is also that angry bald guy on the Arsenal Fans TV channel who was angrily shouting about being beaten by a s**t team... which was now three points above Arsenal with a far better GD. Joensuu Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 The appointment of Koeman was all I needed to feel reassured we were still ambitious and did not have owners that were trying to "asset strip" or had a lack of ambition. Koeman had worked wonders at Feyenoord, but his record at AZ and Valencia was hardly spectacular. It's not hard to find other clubs not being overly wowed by his appointment (c.f http://www.redcafe.net/threads/ronald-koeman-watch.392824/ etc). Don't get be wrong, I think he's been superb for us, but we shouldn't make out that his stock was all that outstanding last summer. Yes his appointment showed ambition - but it didn't clearly show the intent of the owners. They could easily have still been trying to withdraw capital, either with, or without Koeman's prior knowledge. I listened to Reed and Kreuger and did something unusual, I believed what they said, they gave the overall impression that things were being handled and that we should have faith in what they were appointed to do. You are not alone in having listened to Reed and Kreuger. If I recall correctly, on here Reed was being slated for interviews he made prior to Pochettino's departure - e.g. "pick up the details of any contract talks in the summer" etc. Kreuger was also being attacked by many on here for his 'PR style'. They were consistently positive, but certainly didn't command total faith by the majority during the early parts of the summer - if I recall, by the first week of August the stock of both men wasn't being held is great esteem by the majority of our fanbase. The evidence we can all see sitting in 3rd. Irrelevant - hindsight. We had a new coach with excellent playing record and mixed management career, two of best, but unproven, players in the EDV, a new director who was well regarded in the ice hockey, but hadn't convinced our fanbase, Reed being less than 100% convincing (e.g. http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?51089-The-Les-Reed-is-a-Waste-of-Space-thread&highlight=les+reed#.VLfSmEesXoI), and a sh*t load of money for each want away player - but no idea how the owners intended to spend it. Feel free to dream, but don't paint a fake picture of the past. In the middle of last summer (c. 1st week of August), anyone not connected to our club who didn't have doubts for our future and our owner's intent isn't telling the truth IMO. doddisalegend Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 I had heard rumours that not all scousers were idle scroungers and that some of them worked for a living and here is confirmation of that. Is this just summer employment, or do they work all the year round? Well despite being Liverpool fans neither of them are actually scousers both born and bred on the south coast:rolleyes:
Unbelievable Jeff Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 (edited) Koeman had worked wonders at Feyenoord, but his record at AZ and Valencia was hardly spectacular. It's not hard to find other clubs not being overly wowed by his appointment (c.f http://www.redcafe.net/threads/ronald-koeman-watch.392824/ etc). Dig Dig Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 Jeffrey, whether it was percieved as a firesale or not is largely irrelevant. Selling 5 first team players, losing the manager and cosching staff and only having two largely unknown replacements (at the time) wasn't s good situation to be in. This comment is about stupid things being said. Saying we were being asset stripped was a stupid thing to say at the beginning, the middle or at the end of the Summer. That's the point. Wes Tender Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 Well despite being Liverpool fans neither of them are actually scousers both born and bred on the south coast:rolleyes: Ah, plastics. The lowest of the low. I should have realised that they probably weren't real scousers when you said that they were working. In return for them bigging up their glory team at our expense last summer, I presume that you now thank them profusely for over-paying us considerably, whilst at the same time weakening their team and allowing us to strengthen ours with the proceeds? CanadaSaint Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 I have a favourite that covers fans from multiple clubs, large and small, although it used to p*ss me off. After playing us we get the old "That's the worst we've played in XX years". They're right, of course. We sit third in the PL after 21 games as a result of the longest lucky spell in the history of football.
Smirking_Saint Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 I'm sorry, but that's not true. Those who thought we were being asset stripped didnt know what an asset strip was. That's why it was a stupid comment. You can add 'firesale' to that. It certainly wasnt an asset strip but lets be honest, anyone that wasnt concerned with what transpired in the early summer was either mental or lying

Wes Tender Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 It certainly wasnt an asset strip but lets be honest, anyone that wasnt concerned with what transpired in the early summer was either mental or lying Fair enough to have been concerned, just as we all were when the club went into administration. But as then, the sensible position was always to wait and see what happened next before passing judgement based on rumours and innuendo and accepting them as the truth. St.Thomas7 Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 A Liverpool supporting friend of mine when talking about them signing our squad in the summer told me that I should be "chuffed" that a team like Liverpool think my teams players are good enough to be in a team that will challenge for the league. This irritated me considerably. Its like if your girlfriend left you for a celebrity you should be chuffed that she's good enough for them in the first place. These final two paragraph just prove how we look at things differently, I read how you summarize the events and still see a club with ambition, not one selling-out. I had no grand illusion that the club should reveal all its laid out plans, must tell us what is going on every move. I waited to see what they did, not what everyone was speculating about. We had a new coach with excellent playing record and mixed management career We had a few of those and each turned out to be what we needed at the time, NA (who?), Poch (excellent playing record and mixed management career) and then Koeman (coach with excellent playing record and mixed management career) sound familiar. If Poch could show us that a coach with the right philosophies that would compliment the "Southampton way", then Koeman could do the same and "I would trust the Board to get it right". " but don't paint a fake picture of the past" that was the main problem, people were listening and reacting to the fake reports, creating their own fake doomsday scenarios. Some tried not to paint a fake picture, Some listened to the clubs reassuring statements, some analyzed their new acquisitions and came up with the notion that we are still ambitious and still have a dream of reaching CL. Did I have doubts, of course, but they seemed to be doing the right things, what more could I ask for (a step by step monolog on what the board is thinking - NOT!). Anyways, Lets all get behind our team, dream even bigger than the players can, support players through tough times, give praise and patience (Fonte, Mane, long, Gardos all written off as not good enough by many). Our Board has some big decisions to make, CL football could be a reality, players wanting bigger wages or bigger clubs, staying within the confines of the FFP, all new territory for SFC, they will need our support! March on Saints, March on!!

saintwbu Posted 15 January, 2015 Share Posted 15 January, 2015 in the last 10 minutes heard a Spurs fan saying how nobody had heard of Luke Shaw before Pochettino took over Saints and then he turned him into a £30mil player by giving him his chance in the first team, which is why he's such a fantastic coach. This must be a different Luke Shaw to the one that set up Jason Puncheon's equaliser at Stamford Bridge in Nigel Adkins' last match in charge and had already been a regular starter for months
