I was listening to the Football Ramble podcast last week (which, by the way, is spectacularly good and very funny) and they mentioned RK's goalscoring record, which even though I knew he scored a few (free kicks etc), I never realised was this good:

207 goals in 613 appearances!!

That is better than 1 in 3. For a frigging Centre Back.

Anyone else find this utterly staggering?

He was one of the best CB's in the world in his pomp. His free kick taking technique was quite simply stunning, and so was the way he struck the ball. He was technically a genius of a CB. The sort of ball playing, passing CB that is few and far between these days.

His partnership with Rijkaard as the Dutch team centre backs were up there with the best in the world during the late 80's, early 90's.

Rijkaard had the finesse, but Koeman was the brains as well as the brawn, and his distribution was as good as anyone I have ever seen play the game.

Strange in some ways that I see Alderweireld and his eye for a pass being modelled on how Koeman used to ping a football about with consumate ease.

Ridiculous, isn't it? I remember reading that on wikipedia when we were linked with RK in the Summer and thinking that most strikers would be happy with that goals to game ratio during their career!

Having one of the best defenders ever to have lived as manager is definitely reaping it's rewards this season. The pull he has to bring players in can't be underestimated either. We have not even finished his first season yet and I can tell the bloke will be a Southampton legend.

When you consider he isn't very tall and didn't have much pace you wonder why he was one of the great defenders (the same questions that were asked of Bobby Moore).

The answer lies in his brain. His reading of the game was brilliant and his first was always in his head.

It's no coincidence that same brain is now being used to create the meanest defence in the Premier League.

What a strange article. Starts with this:

He is not darkly handsome, like Martinez, or a charismatic fundamentalist, like Pochettino, and he does not quite have the sales pitch of Rodgers.

Then seems intent on proving he's not as good as everyone is saying he is.

I think there's a decent point in there somewhere, but I couldn't find it...

It is a way of beginning to come to terms with the fact that we are good this year without fully acknowledging it just in case we fall apart. They wouldn't want to look wrong again unnecessarily.

To be top scorer in the CL as a defender is pretty remarkable.

also holds a world record ....for the defender to score most goals in first class /international matches.....Stats. that would put many top strikers to shame..
