Chez Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 (edited) where you at the forest game? were you at the Plymouth game? Excellent display today. We dominated the first half and unlike previous games we came out well in the second half. JP made the right subs at the right time and we worked our socks off. Gutted we didn't get the win. Also gutted to come on here and read the same old depressing **** from `supporters' more intent on moaning than enjoying the football. Yes we are in the **** but we played well. Time to pat the players on the back for once. Very pleased that McGoldrick scored after the abuse he has taken on here. Edited 28 December, 2008 by Chez
SNSUN Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Happy with a draw but we need oh so much more. The second half of the season is going to be slow. With only Charlton below us, I guess the only way is up. Something, on some level within this club, needs to change. Looking forward to the ins and outs in January for some reason. An interesting time in the club's history.

Defencively he was excellent today but he gave th eball away far too often. For me he was worth a 5 and Gobern a 7. Patterson was excellent in the first half but tiring after just 50 mninutes is not acceptable.
Mr saint Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 I've been very busy today, but managed to catch about 30 seconds of the BBC Score programme when they just so happened to be talking about saints. They said we had set up looking like a team playing away from home. Somehow, that didn't surprise me.
Causer Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 I thought it was a good point. The team worked hard but lacked a quality final ball that a Schneiderlin might provide. Davis = He did well made a good save from Doyle but kicking was wayward James = A fantastic goal saving tackle and tried to get forward as well Perry = A cool head at the back with some fantastic tackles on Kebe in the first half Cork = He did well on the ground and used his pace well but was vulerable at times in the air Skacel = Strong in the tackle with good distribution. Smith = A couple of good runs but no end product Holmes = Not his best game didn't keep wide enough tried to beat too many men as well Gilett = Worked hard and put in some good tackles although his passing was poor Gobern = His sheer size helped with some strong tackles and some fine long passes McGoldrick = A huge improvement higher work rate, held it up better, better link up play and a good finish for the goal Patterson = He kept the bell well and worked hard Subs Wright Phillips = not much of the ball Euell = Weak on the ball and in the air Mclaggon = Won his first header and just got better and better great run and pass for the goal.

alpine_saint Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Reading are not typical of the style and nature of the majority of teams we play in this league. Therefore our results against them are fairly irrelevant over the course of the season. A question: Will al those smug fukkers that were saying "so what we lost, we're not in the bottom 3 and if it stays like this over the course of the season we are safe so I am not going to worry about it" NOW admit we have a major fukking problem considering we are now in the bottom 2 ????
lordswoodsaints Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 would have taken that score at the start tbf but it did hurt especially as we had been playing so well and could have gone a couple up.sill we didnt lose and reading are probably one of the better teams in the league and we made them look sh1te tbh.hopefully this will be the turning point for a few players and hopefully it will dawn on them what needs to be done to stay in this league.

CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Brave effort today from a very young team who may have just about deserved all 3 points on merit . But "deserving's got nothing to do with it" if I may quote my favorite movie and home draws are very little use to us in our current position I'm afraid .
sidthesquid Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 McGoldrick played well today because he was playing off the centre forward, which he does well, not leading the line which he is cr*p at. Was it 4-4-2 or 4-5-1? I'd go for 4-4.5/1.5 to keep Jan's pride in place
Chez Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 (edited) Gutted to come on here and read the same delusional bolllocks from the usual suspects. Nothing delusional about that. This board is not just for moaning you know. Edited 28 December, 2008 by Chez

hypochondriac Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Gutted to come on here and read the same delusional bolllocks from the usual suspects. Why is it delusional to say we played well today?
alpine_saint Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Why is it delusional to say we played well today? Have a look at the scoreline, and the home record. they are the ONLY two issues that count. I'd rather we played utter shiiite and WON matches. That's why the usual "we played well" suspects are delusional.
Scudamore Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Back from the game and very pleased with the performance... As Chez says Causer has pretty much nailed it with his performance... I'll steer clear of the same old arguments with the same old dullards, as watching that has lifted my mood after the Forest game and i see no reason to enter petty point scoring arguments only to bring me down...

I'd rather we played utter shiiite and WON matches. That's why the usual "we played well" suspects are delusional. We did play well today but it is also true that we must win games if we are to stay in this league. We must follow this positive display with several wins on the trot or we will go down, but in reality we will not because every good performance is usually followed by a dismal run of defeats. I wish i could feel optimistic about the next few games but i can`t as we have had too many false dawns.

corsacar saint Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Best home performance I have seen this season[ Have seen 5 games], however I feel unless we start winning games we will be cut adrift. Also still baffled by team selections and formation. Then I expect the delusional chairman is poking his nose in as usual. For what it is worth I expect Reading to finish top2, despite being outplayed for most of todays game.
Scudamore Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 My REACTION is that you and Chez are utterly deluded. Good for you...i look forward to the reaction of fellow fans that went to the game... Always interesting to hear other fan's views...
alpine_saint Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Would you rather that our reaction to this game is that we were ****e? Yes. We didnt win. I am utterly disinterested in whether we strung together x number of passes and pretty triangles. The scoreline is all. We didnt win. We were crap. I havent assigned blame anywhere, but we are now languishing second from bottom after failing to win another home game. WE WERE CRAP.
badgerx16 Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 some good, some terrible. What do you want - the players to give up because they have not been good enough previously or for them to do everything possible to win next time out? I, and everybody else, want the latter....... Christ this board is depressing. Even when we play well all people want to do is whine. Can't you leave it till after the next defeat - I'm sure it won't be too long. Unfortunately this is all too true. There is no evidence whatsoever that this team is capable of going on any sort of run of form; it is 8 games since we last won a league game, six since we kept a clean sheet, and D McG has now scored 6 league goals in more than half a season as our main striker. All we currently have to be thankful for is that Charlton seem to be worse than us.
rocknrollman no2 Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 I thought we played ok today, with Gillet being the weakest link. But if we had had a proven goalscorer,we couldve been at least 2-0 up by halftime. We just cant seem to score when we create chances and i think we were lucky today to go 1-0 ahead, although you just knew Reading would equalise. We are now in the bottom three and i think its going to take more than a few kids and Portaloos bumbling to get us out of it.
Wes Tender Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 One of the very few games where we were actually half decent for the entire 90 minutes, but even then, to be realistic, for all of our attractive play we could still only manage one point. With all of our basement opposition picking up points on us, our position becomes ever more precarious. This was typical Saints, playing well against one of the top teams in the division and then when we have three games ahead that ought to be easier to win, just watch us lose them. So yes; attractive, entertaining football, the lads who were dire against Notts Forest and Plymouth upping their game and looking up for it and I still leave the stadium thinking good game, but so what? If we continued in this current form with home draws the rest of the season, it will not be good enough to stay up. The worst home record in our entire history, isn't it? Nothing to be proud of. And presumably Lallana and Surman, who might have made the difference between 1 point and all 3 were not played in case they picked up an injury and we couldn't sell them in a week or two. On the plus side, if Saganowski is back, he might have had a couple today, but it all depends on whether he gets a chance to play. Another plus, McGoldrick looked to be half interested today which makes a change. Hopefully he might be inspired by his goal and realise that with effort comes results.
Chez Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 My REACTION is that you and Chez are utterly deluded. you have failed to explain how describing the teams performance makes me delusional. What am I delusional about?

Charlie Wayman Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 As usual, incomprehensible substitutions from the Lunatic Dutchman ruined any chance of us winning the game. Why, why, why move Holmes from left to right and then take him off when he was playing a blinder on the left wing in the first half? It was also plain to see that Gobern was a complete waste of space, hanging around not even watching the ball or even trying to get into the game. Had we played Euell from the beginning as the second holding midfielder things could have been completely different. There are some dirty barstewards playing for Reading these days that's for sure; I thought they were a better footballing side than that. Awesome performances from Gillett & Skacel, good stuff too from Cork & Perry. Keep going like this ad at least we'll go down with honour and all guns blazing. Will we go down...? Oh, Yes 'fraid so.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Just had read through the rest of the posts and can`t believe no one has mentioned the "Stonewall" penalty for the handball with about 2 mins to go.. How the hell the ref never gave it is a mystery:confused:

Chez Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Disagree about Gillett because of the way he played holding the midfield we were able virtually to play with 4 forwards today. People used to criticise Alan Ball because he gave the ball away but that was only because he had it so much I have been saying for three or four weeks that we need to play Gillett as he is the best at protecting the back four and he certainly did that well today mopping up lots of second ball and breaking down attacks at his passing and on several occiasions he miscontrolled and took too long on the ball. If he can improve that side of his game then we are in business.
Delmary Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 One of the very few games where we were actually half decent for the entire 90 minutes, but even then, to be realistic, for all of our attractive play we could still only manage one point. Hopefully he might be inspired by his goal and realise that with effort comes results.A good point today but I'm not going to get carried away by this rare one result. We're in the bottom three on merit and it's going to be a hard battle against all the odds for the club to avoid relegation. I hope today's result doesn't give Rupert any false security, thinking we're now going to be ok. To survive, the team urgently needs strenghtening, not with more youngsters but with good seasoned pros. The Jan sales, ins and outs will shape our season.
Chap in the Chapel Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 'If we play like that every week we'll have no trouble staying up' will doubtless be the spin employed after the second home game in three that we've thrown away a winning position by conceding a late goal. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. If we play like that against the teams in the Championship (90 per cent of them) who don't try and get the ball down and play and instead employ lug-it-forward football we'll lose, as we have done on most occasions this season. The first time Reading hoofed it forward from a set-piece towards a target man they scored, and I can't see this changing unless the transfer window heralds an astonishing burst of common sense and realism, and two tall, physical centre-backs are signed. I will admit that I was surprised to get a draw, as the team announced (probably what we'll have at our disposal after January) looked like lambs to the slaughter, but we're now in the bottom three, and the table does not lie. It's time for a long, hard, brutal think about the future of this club, and a shifting of thinking away from romantic 'give-it-time' to pragmatic 'do something now'.

Had we played Euell from the beginning as the second holding midfielder things could have been completely different. I disagree with that. For me Holmes did **** all yet again. No idea why he was moved to the right, madness I agree, but he deserved to be subbed. McClaggan did brilliantly when he came on and set up the goal. JP was right to sub Smith - ****e yet again IMO, and he took Patterson off as he was quite clearly tiring. For once JP got it spot on IMO. Also I thought Gobern had a decent game. IMO Euell's first touch is not good enough to play in CM.
SaintRobbie Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Has anyone commented on how Reading played? I suspect they may not have been playing to their full potential perhaps.
forever a red and white Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 lowe out. that will see an upturn in the teams immeidate fortunes
explorer saint Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 Indeed the most obvoious pen I've seen this season, the ref should hold his head in shame we woz robbed! I know not a very original post!! Also thought Gobbern was excellent especially first half, Patterson too lightweight by far needs Le Tiss to get him down McDonalds quick
chi saint Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 I don't claim to have the business acumen of R L (thank god i'm in public service) nor the coaching ability of Jan ( I am willing for the time being to credit him with some) but it's abundently clear what we need. It's been mentioned on here in one form or another over these past few years. We need some hard men, leaders, call them what you will but we need someone on the flippin pitch who's going to kick both ours and the opposition arses when needed. Someone who the youngsters can look to when the going gets tough (most games at the mo) and lean on to give the opposition some stick, a la a Casey type etc. The boys have the skill, some lovely passing movement but when it comes down to it the the defender in front of them couldn't give a s**t he's gonna simply kick them off the ball as so often I have witnessed. An investment in the right type of player might, and I say might make all the difference!
Cabrone Posted 28 December, 2008 Posted 28 December, 2008 I'm sure all the happy clappies are thinking '4 points from Reading and only 18 points away from the playoffs.............isn't Lowe a super duper chairman'. Lowe out.
