Has anyone commented on how Reading played?

I suspect they may not have been playing to their full potential perhaps.

they played teh exact same game as at their place - booting it long down the channels. They were slightly more effective than at the Madjeski but we just kept the ball better. They do not have a big man up front which is where we struggle. Coppell sppeared to have not learned a thing from watching us last time and also on Sky and didn't expose ou weaknesses at all.

Credit where credit is due we played well and largely didn't allow them to play their own game

We dictated most of first half but were as usual unable to finish

Reading were better in second half and it was even in trema of play, we managed to score when they were having a good spell and looking like getting

a breakthrough.

We could havel lost it late on but also could have won it if the ref

understood that handball in the box is a penalty.

'If we play like that every week we'll have no trouble staying up' will doubtless be the spin employed after the second home game in three that we've thrown away a winning position by conceding a late goal. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. If we play like that against the teams in the Championship (90 per cent of them) who don't try and get the ball down and play and instead employ lug-it-forward football we'll lose, as we have done on most occasions this season. The first time Reading hoofed it forward from a set-piece towards a target man they scored, and I can't see this changing unless the transfer window heralds an astonishing burst of common sense and realism, and two tall, physical centre-backs are signed. I will admit that I was surprised to get a draw, as the team announced (probably what we'll have at our disposal after January) looked like lambs to the slaughter, but we're now in the bottom three, and the table does not lie. It's time for a long, hard, brutal think about the future of this club, and a shifting of thinking away from romantic 'give-it-time' to pragmatic 'do something now'.
A good post with a large touch of reality.

Lowe out.

totally agree but i do not intend to let my wanting lowe out spoil a good performance TODAY.

if there is any sort of organized protest next week i will support it but tonight i am a little bit happier

I doubt you will find any Saints fan that doesn't think we will either be relegated or will struggle to survive. Your post is therefore just a pathetic attempt to paint supporters that went and enjoyed the game today as `happy clappy'.

Just had read through the rest of the posts and

can`t believe no one has mentioned the "Stonewall" penalty

for the handball with about 2 mins to go..

How the hell the ref never gave it is a mystery:confused:

Just got back and yes I cannot believe how that penalty was missed, seems like the whole ground less the Reading fans also saw it but somehow the ref didn't.

I dont really see why Alpine bothers, he/she/it clearly doesn't enjoy football and is now trying to ruin it for everyone else.

For me McGoldrick was Man of the Match and young Kayne looks like a good prospect. Hope hes brought in gradually, i was also impressed with oscar and thought Cork (as always) had a good game.

Hopefully some sort of result, or just a good performance vs Man Utd can change our season. what a bad footballing year 2008 has been! Roll on 2009

I thought the team played really well today, but we need to be able to adapt that talent to teams that play long ball against us. We do well against Reading because they play open football and can be counter-attacked (e.g. our goal). Get Pearce back at centre-back...

Same workrate plus a slightly more solid defence and a slightly more cutting edge attack and we'll probably survive this season.

I'm keeping faith with what I see on the field, ******** to everything else

Yep, I'm on a wind-up and I am so trying to ruin it for everyone else - nothing to do with Lowe, Wilde, Jp and the players, of course....

As for saintwarwicks oh-so highly original and seldom-used by him () repeat back riposte, I think you are find I am bang-on-the-money with my predictions..as least compared to the happy-clappy shiiite you spout.

Bet you really enjoyed todays pretty triangles...

good post. Think Pearce only out due to it being Reading, wasn't he?

Most teams are happy with point away from home hence sit back, leaving our quite skillful midfield to play around but without decent forward play to break them down -Reading wanted a win -actually suited us as you say

i actually normally agree with a lot of what you say alpine

but now you are just making a fool of yourself because we did play well today (and certainly no pretty triangles mainly hoofing it up to patterson) and that is not possible to see from the mountains.

Listened to the second half. To be honest was so down after my trip last week I was even trying to find excuses not to tune in at all.

Have to say it was enjoyable, sure it was obvious what was coming, but it did at least sound like a good game for a change. It at least got me off Facebook and into actually LISTENING for the first time in a while

Still think we're in trouble and agree with Chi Saint that we need some quality in during the window, but no idea how or where from.

Worryingly though, I find myself almost in agreement with Alpine. If I want to be entertained I can go and watch Kylie in concert fluffy, bubbly and no substance, but sort of leave not feeling very fulfilled - bit like Saints have been on and off this year.

Unfortunately I want to see (or hear) my team win, and just one dirty gritty battling win would be SO much better than a season full of Kylie gigs...

But we now need much more than just one....

Don't think anyone is saying that they prefer nice football to wins, or that its ok forget the result we played ok, the point made today is that we did play pretty well.

This is match reaction, we all know this season is poor but today, we did ok.

If (big if) it wasn't for whats gone before this would be good result as well -against Reading.

Good spirit, players worked very hard - including McG, good atmosphere and entertaining game.

It did sound that way on the radio. Compared to last week I couldn't believe the atmosphere (mind you I was in the Chapel)

But what was the actual spark, the real difference between this week and last?

On the radio I only heard Cork's name about twice, but Gobern & McLaggon seemed to be all over the place.

Was it the return of a real defensive midfielder (Gillett) or the fact that DMG player the "in the hole role", it sure sounded a good game to watch.

Is there a lesson for us to look out for in the team selection for Man U and beyond?

Complete utter ******** Perry was outstanding and won loads of last ditch challenges.

I have not had chance to see the goal again but first impression was KD late coming off his line.

Good performances from Gobern, Skacel, Cork and McGoldrick did very well today.

Some of Perry's challenges were magnificent. 36 he may be.....

The repeat back riposte is in response to the same old ******** from you after each game, you see it works both ways :D As for the triangles I don't know what game you were watching (or not as is the case ) but it was mostly hoof upfield and I witnessed Mcgoaldrick having a good game

Great. Slightly bigger triangles than usual.

One goal. At home. Then couldnt shut the game out.

Same old story. All season.

For me it was the inclusion of Patterson up front. The ball stuck and we could then play further up the field. In addition Gobern and Gillett protecting the back four much better.

My greatest fear against united is the space their wide men will get. Our full backs must get better protection from the wide men. Holmes and Smith offered little. McClaggen worked well going both ways, less so BWP.

Couldn't listen to the commentary due work, but followed the 2nd half by the live text on BBc and OS. My finger hasn't recovered from all the hitting the refresh button

Also had an eye on the other scores ... Donny and Forest and even Charlrton were all winning when I first looked so had we gone behind we'd have been bottom of the table, luckily Sheff Utd woke up!! At least Norwich have been dragged back down into the mire.

Still we are 1 point and 4 goals goal difference better off than I was expecting so things could have been worse, and Skatesmuff lost again.

One of he really important points about today's performance was that especially in the first half, we played far better football and created more chances WITHOUT Surman or Lallana then we ever do with them playing. Could it be that since all the talk about this pair being megastars the rest of the team usually just sit back and leave it to them to sort out? Maybe after all they are not quite the friggin' great dog's cajones that we are led to believe they are; if we can offload them for some serious mullah then maybe it's a win, win, win for us?

Today, also, Jan became animated. It's taken but half a season but we seem to be witnessing some progress? Dutch people are renowned throughout the world for being so laid back that they are usually horizontal even when sitting upright, so it must have taken something pretty huge to shake him from his torpor. What did Wupert put in his Christmas Pud?

Posted

Bizarrely, the best we could end up before today was fourth bottom. Now after the next 'round' of matches we could be fifth bottom. Funny how results work out.

I would take that in a game's time.

The next three are critical. Today we got a point I wasn't expecting.

Praise to JP. He made a very ordinary team on paper draw against top opposition. Thats good management!

Watch him blow all that good work away against Barnsley and Doncaster.

Come on. Do you REALLY believe that baloney ???

did you not read the post?

i said......

HOPEFULLY this will be the turning point for a few players and HOPEFULLY it will dawn on them what needs to be done to stay in this league.

this sentiment was also echoed by a saints legend.....david armstrong.is he talking baloney as well? i would guess he knows a lot more about football than somebody who doesnt even attend any matches....dont you think?

wheres the baloney?

if i had said....

this will be the turning point for a few players and it will dawn on them what needs to be done to stay in this league.

then it could be said i was talking baloney.

were you there today alpine???

Was a good performance against a very average non determined Reading side. The truth is we had loads of possesion as we always do but simply dont know what to do with it. We did not really test their keeper with majority of our shots going sky high. We were the better team however as Reading just didnt seem interested. That to me is an important fact that us playing at our best against a team that couldnt be arsed still didnt have the know how to put the goals away. When we did score Reading turned into another team and if it wasent for Davis AGAIN or the woodwork we would of lost. After we scored we were the worst team and made mistake after mistake.

You seemed to have missed a few points from the game. You mentioned Reading hitting the woodwork but failed to mention Mcgoaldrick's bullet of a shot that hit the underside of the bar. We also tested their goalie a couple of times forcing saves and Reading failed to have one shot at goal in the first half. You also say Reading were not interested, I say we were the better team and Reading could not work out how to play us just like the last time we played them. You also missed the blatant handball from Reading in the penalty area at the end of the game. After we scored Reading upped their game which is to be expected by a team that is in all probability a promoted side. Possession wise it was 51% - 49% in favour of us, goal attempts: Saints 15 (9 on target), Reading 8 (5 on target). That makes your post a bit more balanced :D

I just don't really understand why you get so upset and are so negative when you don't go to any games, its not costing you anything or wasting any of your time. Instead you just spend all your time on the internet (nice one mate!) slagging off players, managers, chairman and so called 'happy clappy' fans who have commited the ultimate sin of being positive and enjoying going to a football match.

As Groucho Marx would say, I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member...

Davis 7, Another good performance, great late save to conserve the point, although kicking fairly weak and could command the air better.

James 7, Looked good, some fine crosses.

Perry 6, Some great last ditch tackles but simply not big enough to win enough in the air.

Cork 8, Some super challenges but again not good enough in the air and it eventually led to the goal (maybe not him directly but the defence in general.)

Skacel 6, Good in defence although very few crosses into the opposing box and poorish free kicks.

Smith 4, Did nothing apart from give the ball away and get booked.

Gillett 6, Useful shield to the back 4 but gave the ball away to much with 'hollywood' passes.

Gobern 7, Looks a very good prospect especially due to his size (much needed in the current side) although seemed to get tired and gave the ball away alot in the closing stages.

Holmes 6, Worked hard as every, but not much end product.

McGoldrick 8, Worked hard, with some great skills at times and took his goal well. TBH looked the only one likely to cause Reading real problem and did on some occasions.

Patterson 6, Worked fairly hard and held the ball up well early on but probaly in the team a year too early.

Overal we looked alright but we always looked vunerable from crosses and set pieces.

Good point this...one which i bought up in the pub after the game...which beats what i usually bring up in pubs...

I'm all for keeping them both but it was a good performance without our two most saleable assets...and it becomes more obvious to me with every passing game that McGoldrick needs to be behind another forward to be at his most effective...which in short leaves me wondering where exactly Lallana fits in this team...

You must be new here - we could be a top 4 Prem side, just won the FA Cup, playing in Europe with full houses every week, and Alpine would still find something to whinge about...! That's his way - you should get used to it, most regs here have. ;)

Oh the irony...

Do you find it so unpalatable that people disagree with your views that you have to label them "happy-clappys"???

Yet another alpinism along with tippy tapy triangles...which once again just wasn't the case today as we got balls in the box in a more direct style...still having not been to the game or indeed respected the views of anyone who's not negative you probably wouldn't have picked up on that...
