fez Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 Not according to the bookies True, on Betfair we're 2.64 for a top 4 finish and 26 to win the cup. So 10 times more likely for top 4 than the cup.
Redslo Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 I could hardly disagree more. We do have a chance now at a CL spot, and what a splendid achievement that would be, but realistically it is a outside chance I suspect - we are rather more likely to miss the target and end up with the unmitigated horror of the Europa League #shudders#. Even if we did get into the CL we are surely neither funded, or for that matter experienced enough, to long prosper at that exalted level of the game. On the other hand I see no reason to believe why we don't have some sort of real chance of getting to Wembley this season - with a bit of luck of course. I'm easily old enough to remember '76 and thus I know what it means - I say our younger fans deserve the same experience if we can manage it again. Also, unless you are Arsenal 4th place isn't silverware but the FA Cup is.
Redslo Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 I thought he couldn't play as wasn't part of the squad for the first game? RULES OF THE FA CHALLENGE CUP COMPETITION Rule 15(f) All players must have been eligible to play in the original tie in order to play in a replayed or postponed match; however a player who has been suspended according to the disciplinary procedures under the Rules of The Association may play in a postponed or replayed match after the term of his suspension has expired. http://www.thefa.com/thefacup/more/rules

eelpie Posted 13 January, 2015 Share Posted 13 January, 2015 I hope we do well and thrash Ipswich. However I won't cry too much if we do lose, so long as we put in a good performance, as now we have a very god chance of achieving European football though a top four finish. It would be wrong not to go all out for the replay win. Otherwise the wrong vibes will have a negative effect. And weren't we furious when Poch put out a weakened team against Sunderland? Rasiak-9- Posted 13 January, 2015 Share Posted 13 January, 2015 And weren't we furious when Poch put out a weakened team against Sunderland? Justifiably so, because the range of where we could finish in the league, even then, was literally like 7th to 10th, which absolutely wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference to anything. Finishing 4th in this day and age, and successfully qualifying for the Champions League, could potentially change what Southampton FC are forever. Look at Napoli for instance in Italy; decent-sized club with decent money, but since making the most of their golden-ish generation with the likes of Cavani and Lavezzi and suchlike, qualifying for the Champions League and doing relatively well, combined with the demise at several of the other big Italian giants, they're now not just a flash in the pan but a solid top-four side in the Serie A, with the ability to buy players from the likes of Real Madrid for £30Mn, continue qualifying for the Champions League in the future in order to maintain that, and of course, compete in the cup competitions in the future really just as a side-effect of being good. That's the kind of thing that could happen to Saints if we did qualify for the CL and make a good fist of it. I mean, if we were in a group with Real Madrid, Ludogoretz and Basle, would we have no chance of getting through it? (This may not apply as I can't remember if Liverpool were seeded because of their history in the competition or just got a favourable draw). Finishing 7th meant nothing, whereas the FA cup really opened up for us to win a trophy. Finishing 4th means everything, and besides its only the 3rd round. Would happily go out of the FA cup in return for 1 extra point in the league. Would happily sacrifice the trophy in return for 5 extra points in the league. Saintandy666 Posted 13 January, 2015 Share Posted 13 January, 2015 And we won't stand a chance in the champions league next year (*if* we qualify) if we have this kind of league or - mentality. We can have both! Especially against championship sides that we *should* easily beat. Taking nothing for granted though here.
