Ipswich vs Saints - Build Up

Lighthouse

In all the years supporting Saints there has never been a player who has blackmailed the club constantly in the way Schneiderlin is doing. I'd prefer we got shot of him and brought in a replacement and adapted to life without him, than be constantly subjected to his interviews in the press they stir up more doubt about his future at the club.

Koeman immediately puts to rest rumors linking him with leaving the club, whereas Morgan and his agent fan the flames drawing attention to his availability should some club put up the money.

I've lost trust in him and until he shows otherwise I will continue to express my belief that we'd be better getting shot of him sooner than later.

It's been on the cards that Morgan will leave in the summer whatever, so why not accept this and enjoy the fact that he is a valuable asset that could (a) help us achieve a European place, and (B) bring Saints a load of money to spend on a suitable replacement with hopefully money to spare?

I would give Cork a start then if he is fit enough.

You could also understand completely if Koeman decided to play McCarthy instead of Fonte.

Centre back situation is delicate and as Koeman has said this morning, league is the priority.

Pochettino got crucified for not playing our best available 11 last year....just saying.

Southampton FC ‏@SouthamptonFC

Koeman: "The players are feeling well. If there is a good freshness, then I don't change a lot. We'd like to go on in the #FACup." #saintsfc

That's fair enough but will that freshness last till Saturday if all the big guns play tonight? Though it'll be what we'll have to do a lot next season if we get Europe.

He did. When we were clearly unable to finish any higher than 6th in the league and even that would have been very, very difficult.

We have a small squad and some injuries and a chance to finish in the top section of the league. That is the difference.

Also last year quite a few big teams had gone out early on, whilst it was also a couple of rounds further on. We are still in the 3rd round and all the top sides are left in the draw (mostly with easy ties in the next round).

Certainly wouldn't make wholesale changes, and he won't. But personally I would bench Fonte and Pelle, maybe Clyne as they are all positions where we have no cover.

If the team that plays doesn't beat a team from the league below who will also rotate then fair enough, they deserve to go through.

Got 4 days till Newcastle, it shouldn't be a huge problem. Just a couple of changes for me, Targett as he needs the games, maybe Cork if fit but otherwise full strength.

It'd be a problem if a player or two picks up an injury that'll keep them out for 5 days (or more). I'd go:

--------------------------Forster--------------------------

------------------Gardos---------McCarthey-------------

Clyne-------------------------------------------------Targett

-------------Davis--------Cork-------------Reed------------

Igsgrove---------------------------Long---------------------

--------------------------Pelle--------------------------------

Igsgrove looked great when he came on in the first game last week and Long is purposely tucked more inside than the former so he can play the role Mane's been playing for the last few weeks but also drift out wide when Targett needs a holder so he can run on the overlap.

I'd be tempted to rest Wanyama. He's been our best player for quite some time now and if anything happened to him it'd have a hugely negative bearing on our season IMO, we'd miss him so much. Especially given the CB situation and that he could probably cover there if we got desperate. Rest Morgan for the same reason too, him and Victor have been the reason we've conceded so little goals this season. JWP instead of Cork if he's not fit.

Think the OS has a bit of a problem with their predicted XI:

"Toby Alderweireld is sidelined due to his hamstring injury

PREDICTED XI: Forster; Alderweireld, Clyne, Fonte, Gardos, Bertrand; Ward-Prowse, Wanyama, Cork; Long, Pellè, Tadić."

we have a bit of a shortage of players at the moment, 7 out injured or unavailable, that's a very significant portion of the very small squad. One thing we must do for next season, Europe or not, is add depth to the squad.

That's a predicted XII actually

Yes but that was after it became blatantly obvious we weren't going to qualify for the CL. We had nothing to lose and should have gone for a cup. We have much more to lose this season.

it was not blatantly obvious we would not get Europa league at the time, though

I don't remember players suffering badly back in the championship/league 1 when asked to play mid week games. I reckon while things are going well the players will want to play.

But then it was the same for every team, now it's different, some have midweek games, others don't, plus there are no bad teams in the PL.

Playing more games a season is easier on the players?

as windows said, if we were playing midweek in the football league, more than like everyone else was too

as you can see, we have players good enough for the Champions league that played with un in the NPC.

the intensity is just not the same where danny fox can get away with having a bad game and we go on to do rather well.

I normally park in the Spiral car park next to the Wolsey theatre but I think it is closed in the evening. There's a large car park behind Crown Pools which is within walking distance. The Punch & Judy is on Cardinal park and can get quite full with cinema traffic etc. so would avoid. There's lots of parking around the town centre. Could also park at the station and walk from there.

I should have said avoid parking at Cardinal park rather than the avoid the pub!

Exactly. We could win games at a canter lower down. We have to play 100% to get wins at PL level in the vast majority of cases.

Its the concentration as much as physical elements.

Lots of mention earlier about Morgan's absence from training but Steve Davis also missing. Suggest they were both 100% knackered after Sunday and needed a proper rest before the Newcastle game. Let's face it these two lads covered more miles than the rest of the team put together up at OT... well not literally obviously but you get the point.

Don't think Davis was missing at all, seemed to appear in yesterday's gallery.

Not quite how I see it. There are only two good teams in the PL right now, about four who are so-so including us and the rest a load of crap who are interchangeable with the top half of the Championship. Eight could go down and eight could come up and you wouldn't even spot the difference. This must be one of the poorest season's yet for the PL in overall quality.

And of course we have two players away on International Duty so it is a lot different from last season

Why is of course why we got beaten by Burnley and took about 70 minutes to break Leicester down, not exactly the same thing as beating Wycombe with about 5 future world cup players is it.

Using that logic we might as well play our best 11 tonight as they won't even have to break in to a sweat to beat a championship side at a canter......

Where have the club stated their expected XII?

They haven't, it's just St Armstrong being all pseudo club mouthpiece again, in his saintsweb preview. Couldn't even get the number of players right, although I see that he's corrected that since.. Probably he who left out Davis as well...maybe even Morgan but KBilly's usually about right.
