Lighthouse Posted 11 January, 2015 Share Posted 11 January, 2015 The second part of this weeks trilogy. I would personally rest most of our players for the trip to Newcastle. Yes a cup win would be nice but a top four finish is suddenly looking like a serious target. Fair play to everyone who makes the midweek trip to Portman Road for a game on the Beeb. Baird of the land Posted 11 January, 2015 Share Posted 11 January, 2015 Elia can't play, in order to play in an FA Cup replay you need to have been registered for the original game. Ahh wasn't aware of that. I'd say play Tadic then, as i was thinking Elia could have done with more minutes on pitch.

SNSUN Posted 11 January, 2015 Share Posted 11 January, 2015 We've played Chelsea, Arsenal and Utd and achieved 7 points. We have every right to believe we can win this competition, but only if we field our strongest, or near strongest team. The likes of Long, Tadic, Reed and Targett may well start this game, but keep the rest as strong as possible.

The9 Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 (edited) I'm going, and I'd pick Forster Clyne Fonte Gardos Targett Schneiderlin Reed Tadic Davis Long Pelle Bench: Davis, Bertrand, McCarthy, Ward-Prowse, Wanyama, Isgrove, Seager Gives us Reed's passing and workrate in the middle in the kind of game where harrying opponents into errors is likely to be more successful than it is in the Prem, rests Wanyama in a match where really we should be in possession and don't need two out and out DMs and gives Long a chance to have a run against a team he's already done well against with a point to prove after not getting on yesterday. Let us win or lose in normal time, anyway. Partially for my sleep requirements and partially for player recovery before Newcastle away. The9 Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 should be a good night, even if on tv we should all be there and sell it out All well and good saying it, but in order to get there I'm leaving work early on Weds and getting back at the earliest at 2am for a 7am alarm and 9am meeting. It's a good 3 hour drive, potentially in rush hour M25 up there. Getting back should be ok, except M3 roadworks... Can't see us selling all our tickets for reasons not unlike that, tbh. norwaysaint Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 I'd like a strong side, partly because I want us to keep in the cup, obviously, and partly because losing is just bad for the morale. I don't want us going into the Newcastle game having just lost to Ipswich, I want them full of confidence. Play the best team that's available with a view to substituting key players when we've got a decent lead. There is no reason at all to think that a lesser saints team could beat Ipswich, who I would say are currently stronger than some in the lower half of the prem. S-Clarke Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 I'd expect to see the likes of Long, Tadic, and maybe Targett feature. Possibly a chance of Corky being back on the bench for this too. But other than that, we don't have a great deal of scope to change it, as Elia isn't available for this either. Isgrove as a bench option again I assume. In many ways, we're forced to go pretty strong!
SaintBobby Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 (edited) I'd go for a few changes. I'd probably start with Targett, Isgrove and Long. Damn shame that Jay's return date has slipped. Biggest worry for me is lack of cover at centre back. If one of Fonte or Gardos gets injured or sent off, we have a massive problem. Would love to rest Pelle as he is far to impotant to risk at portman road but we don't have anything even close to a like for like swap so I think he has to play. Saint_Ash Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 I'd like to see long start up front and rest Pelle, also rest one of Morgan or Vic as the amount of running around in the centre of the pitch they do is phenomenal. I'd go with - ---------------------Fraser---------------------- Bertrand------Fonte--------Gardos------Targett --------------Morgan--------------Reed---------- ------------------------Tadic-------------------------- JWP--------------------------------------------Davis -------------------------Long----------------------- Rest Clyne as only came back from injury recently and 3 games in a week could be damaging. Interchange JWP/Davis/Tadic behind long and have the bull terrier Reed alongside Morgan and rest Big Vic, Morgan missing the Arse game should be a bit fresher. A bench of Clyne, Pelle, Wanyama, Cork (if fit), McCarthy and a couple of youngsters seems pretty strong.

Lallana's Left Peg Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 Crazy how yesterdays result makes me care less about this game, yet really I shouldn't as the chances of us finishing Top 4 didn't significantly improve and we really should go as strong as possible in this game. Yet in the back of my head I am just starting to wonder what the priority should be. Assuming no-one is carrying an injury we don't know about, I'd like to see us go 3-5-2 in order to get Long and Pelle working together up front but with only two centre halves fit and McCarthy playing tonight I suspect we'll be 4-3-3. On that basis: Forster Clyne Fonte Gardos Bertrand Wanyama Reed Schneiderlin Long Pelle Isgrove Maybe Tadic instead of Isgrove if Elia is to play at Newcastle. Professor Posted 13 January, 2015 Share Posted 13 January, 2015 Until Yoshida returns, McCarthy must surely be the CB cover so having him on the bench at Ipswich would seem sensible but would you actually take Fonte or Gardos off during the game to give him a run out, even if we had a 2 goal lead? Going to be another tough game but I really think that we have to prioritise the Newcastle game, thus substandard XI for me. Big opportunity at Newcastle, they're dimished b having players at the CAN and having no manager. Arsenal are at City so in the case of a win at Newcastle we could in theory be 8 points above them. Spurs and Utd will probably win but a 6 point lead over Arsenal would be enormous with 16 left to play. SuperMikey Posted 13 January, 2015 Share Posted 13 January, 2015 Getting 3pts against Newcastle is crucial to building up some safety within the Top 4 (and also because i'm coming down from Edinburgh to go), so I would make some changes for this one. ----------------FORSTER------------------ MACCA----FONTE----GARDOS-----TARGETT ------DAVIS---WANYAMA---MORGAN------- TADIC-----------LONG----------------ELIA Subs: K.Davis, Clyne, Bertrand, Cork, Reed, JWP, Pelle It's imperative to keep Clyne fit, and even though he had a cracking game against United I would play McCarthy over him this time. Same for Bertrand, and Targett needs game time anyway. Don't really mind if we go out at this stage in the cup - with an opportunity in the league that we have now I couldn't give two f*cks about the cup! It would have been that easy to beat Ipswich if Saints had been doing anything other than just going through the motions for the vast majority of the match, and even then we spend the second half looking extremely comfortable and not threatened at all - without really threatening that much ourselves. Their goal was near enough a fluke, a looping header into the very top corner with the player jumping away from goal. 95% of the time that wouldn't threaten the keeper at all. Apart from that they didn't really threaten, despite the Saints players tangibly only putting in their usual levels of effort for the amount of time it took to equalise. Hopefully with the crowd on their backs the better side will actually turn up this time. Risky game trying to conserve energy when you're not actually winning, it leads to having to go to places like Ipswich midweek.
