Andy Townsend to leave ITV (ITV.... that's ITV, not Sky!!)

Oops!:lol::blush:

Sorry, my bad - mind elsewhere!

Umm, ITV

That's ITV, not Sky!

Anyone know how to edit thread titles...??

Only the mods can do that.

Anyway, I will be very happy if I never hear Andy Townsend commentating on an England match ever again. I just hope that ITV don't go an do something stupid and replace him with someone even more clueless and annoying.

Ah, thanks. Never mind, should provide some cheap giggles.

Which other ex-Saints players or managers would be just as carp (or worse) as replacements for him?

Comments welcome on a thread with the correct heading...!

(ok, I'll shut up about it now)

Thank Feck for that. Lets just hope he doesn't move to Sky or BBC, he is truly awful. He also seems very keen always to brush over the fact he used to play for us. I think this part of the Guardian report says it all "The former Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Chelsea midfielder" The former player, former pundit and current tosser.

As it stands they haven't got much football to show next season, a bit of Euro quals and then the tournament in Summer 2016.

Even if they win the highlights package for the Prem presumably that's from next year not next season (I think).

Imagine Lee Dixon will be the man from now on.

Look forward to him spending more time 'in and around' the job centre'. For me Clive the trouble is he just commentated too well if he had scuffed it he would still be in the job.

Well is a former saints player.....however I'm not old enough to know if he was any good for us or not...

I am. He wasn't bad - originally played for the Terriers - but then it was noticeable that he stopped performing as he was obviously angling for a move, got it and since then has never, to my knowledge, ever mentioned that he played for Saints.

Sensible decision.

As is the one to release Matt......Smith.....with....his....appallingly....delayed....delivery....style.

The next cull should be on MotD, half of them can go, save me putting it on mute.

Didn't we get Townsend from Weymouth for £30k - if memory serves.

Pretty good as a player for us, then moved "on" to Villa. Of course, these days that would be a step DOWN but in those days Villa were a top 6 team.

Agree he's not the best commentator/pundit. I actually quite like Matt Smith though. He makes the wednesday night footie quite exciting, and with Strachan to control that's pretty good.

Sh!ttest commentator ever, also painful to listen to an Englishman from Maidstone in Kent describe the ROI as "we" in commentary numerous times over the years :mcinnes:

if you have Sky+ just record it wait 10-15 minutes then start watching the recording then you can x30 through all the clap trap:D

This. He bangs on about his Chelsea days like its the only club he played for. He only started doing this when Chelsea rose to prominence as well. He's a red n white stripe denier.

As some one else mentioned hopefully Chiles' next to get the boot. He got lucky with the regional accent boom of the late 2000's when it was considered politically correct to have thick people from Birmingham/Manchester on our tele's. Hopefully that luck has run out.

Anyone remember Chiles' meltdown week when he went on the **** with Cristine Bleakley?? His marriage was breaking down and he thought he had a chance with her. Silly ****er had another mini meltdown when it became apparent Bleakley wasn't the slightest bit interested.

Face for the radio

You've got a face for the radio

Face for the raaaaddddiiiiioooo

Which ironically is where he came from in the first place. My bet is he'll end up back there.. Hopefully doing the graveyard shift at some ****ty West Midlands hospital radio. a la Alan Partridge.

No, I don't like him :-)

He wasn't great, but Clive Tyldesley is far worse and I've no idea how he has made a career out of commentating. He's one of the main reasons I can't stomach ITV coverage.

Hmm, the worst (Wilshere) commentators on the (Wilshere) television, on a par (Jack) with Phil Neville, (Jack Wilshere) and past greats (Wilshere) such as Robbie (Jack) Earle.

Also had (Wilshere) a contagious disease (Jack Wilshere) that makes you (Jack) mention Jack Wilshere (Jack Wilshere) every third word.

I thought he left us for Norwich but i wouldn't swear to it-He was one of our best players at the time and I remember being gutted at his departure, also i thought we let him go cheap around £175k. I can't think who the manager was ,Nicholl maybe ?

He did move on to Norwich. Strange move really, not exactly a step up.

He's a s**t commentator, but I still prefer him to Phil Neville or Micheal Owen.

His career is Welling (105) > Weymouth (40) > Saints (83) > Norwich (71) > Chelsea (110) > Villa (134) > Boro (77) > West Brom (18 )

So a bit of a journeyman average player. TBH, while he has had a memory lapse about his time here at Saints, I think it fair enough to go on about a club or two where you made most of your appearances. So as he bangs on about being at Chelsea, he should do more so about his time at Villa. But no, Villa aren't "cool" like Chelsea are. He may think it portrays him as some superstar ex football player, but we all know that he was an average player who wasn't good enough to get in the England squad some trawled around for some Irish relative (his grandmother).

:lol: Man of the Match every time he plays.

I miss big Ron.

tbh ..I missed Kenneth Wolstenholme's commentaries. He spoke (sparingly) about what was happening in the match, didn't cloud the issue with lots of stats. and details of what players had for breakfast!

OK ...so I'm older than many of you, but I like to watch a game, and not listen to some egocentric non-stop talker sounding like an auctioneer with no volume control, or an ON /OFF switch.

For fun I count the number of times he says 'better' during a match. I believe the record is 17.

Jonathan Pearce next for me

It was always the context that did it for me - for international games, it usually followed a period of ragged, disjointed England possession. Up would pop Crouch or Carroll with a simple layoff that actually found its man....."that's better, much better".

How come Robbie Savage is on every frigging side it seems, giving us his insight. The typical look at me pundit. As for Michael Owen , Pinocchio is less wooden than him

He's on BBC tv and radio, and BT Sport (as both a pundit and a commentator). Trust me, I know what to avoid.

So glad he wasn't in charge for the Spurs match when the goal decision system showed the ball had crossed the line but offside had been given. :D
