Abuse of playing "the advantage"

One thing that has been really annoying me lately is the poor use of "the advantage" by referees. Just because a team retains possession after it has been fouled it does not necessarily have an advantage.

Silly refs.

This happened more than once today but he did book an Ipswich player on one occasion the next time the ball went out of play.

Could do with a rule more like in rugby union with a set period of time to see if an advantage does develop before returning for the foul. Stupid to allow a player to be fouled end up further away from goal through the "advantage" and lose the momentum of any attack.

The better refs do seem to apply the rule like this.

...but if a pass has been made and blundered, then bad luck. You're not meant to have the advantage twice.

I too think the ref and Lin (Kingsland) had a mare. That said he applied advantage well IMHO.

That's true. In the lower leagues (very low) I used to ask the captain whether they preferred to keep the game going or would rather have a free kick. As a top-flight referee once said to us, sometimes a free kick is the only thing they'd win all game.

Or the 'slow whistle' as in ice-hockey.

A foul is committed but the team who have been fouled against keeps possession of the ball, the referee raises his arm to indicate a foul has been committed but the team in possession has the advantage, as soon as the opposition gain possession of the ball or it goes dead the whistle blows and the free kick is then awarded - unless a goal is scored. Or summat like that....

Thought ref was very inconsistent today.

On one occasion I felt he should have booked the Ipswich player, but caught up in playing the advantage, seemed to 'forget'...

The two times I saw him play a (long) advantage he spoke to the player afterwards, one was a booking and the other a warning (which should have been a booking), but both times he went back to the offender.
