Saint Charlie Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Thoughts? Seems pretty composed, decent in the air and powerful if perhaps a little slow to turn and occassionally a bit rash. Not ever going to be of the quality of Lovren or Toby but seems a handy cover CB, certainly an upgrade on Hooiveld which is who he was brought in to replace.
The Cat Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Looks fine to me. I like his style on the ball even if he doesn't sometimes spot runs and holds onto it a fraction too long. Still, rather that than aimless wallops upfield to no one. Strong, good in the air, reasonably quick. Also he's still young for a CB which means as long as he's hungry he's guaranteed to improve.
Viking Saint Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Didn't do anything wrong today.....has a very upright/chest-out running style and perhaps not the quickest but didn't get gassed by anyone today and looked strong in the air
Saint Garrett Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Not great, but not awful. Hopefully he'll get better. Always looks like he struggles with the ball at his feet.

The more he plays next to Toby and Jose he might get better with more experience?
Turkish Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Like shane Long is proving to be somewhat a talisman for us in that we're yet to lose a league game which he has played in. As has already been mentioned he's still relatively young so guaranteed to improve if he's hungry. Think we can out him down as another black box success.
Saint Charlie Posted 4 January, 2015 Author Posted 4 January, 2015 Why not ever? The more he plays next to Toby and Jose he might get better with more experience? Yeah he might I just think he is a good player but not at the level of a Lovren (for us) or Toby. He will probably get more comfortable the more he plays though. He and Toby must be of a similar age.

I have been impressed with Florin in his brief appearances although he's not at Toby's level very few defenders are.
Channon's Sideburns Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Looking at him more closely today..he has a bit of a young Claus about him.
richardc Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 he has really strong leadership and is a rock at the back - just what Liverpool are after - If I were them I would go for Gardos and not Toby who doesnt really have a position

Sour Mash Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 He's looked fine for me, still learning and developing. Hard for any player, but in particular a Centre Back to get into their stride without playing regularly.
Kingsland Codger Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 I like his no-nonsense approach to defending something tricky - when in doubt stick the ball into row Z. Not so much in evidence today but several times against Arsenal when under pressure and alternatives were not immediately obvious he played 'safety first'
Roger Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Hope that's not serious, if it is hold you're head in shame.

supersonic Posted 5 January, 2015 Posted 5 January, 2015 Our 4th best centre-back. Not bad in the air but extremely limited with ball at feet. Still find it astounding that an International footballer cannot kick a ball with both feet....

Goatboy Posted 5 January, 2015 Posted 5 January, 2015 Hope that's not serious, if it is hold you're head in shame. I think richardc is attempting to throw the Liverpool scouts off of the scent!
Turkish Posted 5 January, 2015 Posted 5 January, 2015 Long isn't v good. long is a talisman, like Ian Rush was for Liverpool back in the day, when he scores we win.
david in sweden Posted 5 January, 2015 Posted 5 January, 2015 Too few games to make a definitive judgement, he seems to fit on OK , but it also depends on his ability to fit in with those around him. No player can / should be judged on a handful of games. Those people who were ready to diss Mané a month ago must be hiding under their seats in shame by now. Tadic looked a world-beater at the start of the season, but has lost that " edge ", whereas Long is beginning to show some class - (even for someone being played out of position). ....and Pelle is doing everything right - except putting the ball in the back of the net ...

EBS1980 Posted 11 January, 2015 Posted 11 January, 2015 He will get a run of games now, so got a real chance to prove himself
Saint_Tony Posted 11 January, 2015 Posted 11 January, 2015 Solid and composed again. Far better than Yoshida (who has been good in recent games)imho. Came on in a tough situation, looks like he has been playing in this league for a few seasons.
Saint_clark Posted 11 January, 2015 Posted 11 January, 2015 Feared the worst when Aldeweireld went off, not because Gardos is poor but because of how good Toby is. Gardos however put in easily his best performance for us so far.
Saint Charlie Posted 11 January, 2015 Author Posted 11 January, 2015 He will get a run of starts now too you would imagine with Toby's injury.
shurlock Posted 11 January, 2015 Posted 11 January, 2015 Made two big mistakes that could have been punished but otherwise did very well.
JxgrSaint Posted 11 January, 2015 Posted 11 January, 2015 Looks like Toby will be out for a few weeks, Gardos did well as replacement. Should be fine as long as there are no more CB injuries until Maya returns

VectisSaint Posted 11 January, 2015 Posted 11 January, 2015 He plays we win, yet again. Didn't work against Sheff Utd though. He did look good today, beginning to show more composure and able to deliver a decent ball. Looks like we will be relying on him for the next 3 weeks. No back up again, our squad depth may be shown up if we are unlucky.

Anyway, 4 decent central defenders all of them internationals is good depth, you'd have to be very unlucky to be without more than 2 at one time.

Under Weststand Posted 11 January, 2015 Posted 11 January, 2015 He is growing in to a sound defender, looking better with every game. Made a couple of crucial tackles & interceptions today. Looked composed and slotted in after Toby had been subbed off.
