andoru Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 As you all know, at the end of the season the fans pick their 'Player of the Year'. Now that we're past the midway point, who are you leaning towards? I find it pretty hard to single any one player out this year. They've really been playing as a team. If I had to pick though, I think I'd go with Wanyama. He's been immense so far, and you can see that he's worked hard to iron out his weaknesses, particularly his passing, which was pretty erratic last year. Toby and Bertrand have been consistently good as well.

He just oozes class, best defender I've seen for Saints in my lifetime of watching Saints (started in the early 90s), even ahead of Killer for me.
Lorne Malvo Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Bertrand. Thought LB would be a problem area for us but not missed Shaw one bit.
Hamilton Saint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 So many in contention. Good sign! 1. Alderweireld 2. Wanyama 3. Clyne 4. Bertrand
PhilippineSaint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Has to be Wanyama if only for his Twinkletoes action in the Arsenal game.
andoru Posted 3 January, 2015 Author Posted 3 January, 2015 RE: all of the above. Interesting that everyone's gone for defensive options, isn't it? Even the midfielder is the DM.

Le Tiss with pace some may say
Lorne Malvo Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 but Mane has been the standout player without a doubt. Outstanding talent. Le Tiss with pace some may say lol wut?
Wiggles31 Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Tough one. Consistently Alderweireld has brilliant since his first touch in August. Wanyama and Clyne have also been brilliant.
david in sweden Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 I'd go along with a vote for Toby or Clyne, but I'll save my end of season vote for Jose Fonte. Taking over as captain, he seems to be in total control and looks the real thing both on and off the pitch.
Ultimatt Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Best: Toby Most Improved: Wanyama. Has he passed Morgan? His best this season has been better than Morgan's best.
Tom28 Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Steven Davis. He is so so underrated, but massively important to the team. His work rate is unbelievable; he's the guy that links play with the forwards but he never neglects defensive duties either. His first touch for the second goal against Arsenal was ridiculous.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 (edited) Interesting one. If you'd taken this poll before November, after the first 3 months, it'd have been hard to see beyond Pelle & Tadic but there's no mention now. I think it shows how the whole group have contributed brilliantly in their own way BUT if I had to pick just the one player now, then it's just Toby with Big Vic, Clyne & Davis not far behind. Jose has been a massive upgrade as captain too. There clearly won't be a runaway player of the season at the end of the season either, the way the whole group are performing. Sheaf Saint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Has to be Wanyama if only for his Twinkletoes action in the Arsenal game. Technically that doesn't count, as it was in the second half of the season
Sheaf Saint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 RE: all of the above. Interesting that everyone's gone for defensive options, isn't it? Even the midfielder is the DM. Given that we have the best defensive record in the PL, and that our forwards are often criticised for being wasteful in front of goal, it's hardly surprising is it.
hasper57saint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Steven Davis for me. He's fitted with a Diesel engine that is strong, reliable and consistent. He never gives up.
The Cat Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Is there a law that whenever Steven Davis is mentioned the word "underrated" must appear in the same sentence? It's a close call for me but I'll give it to Clyne. He just gets my vote ahead of Alderweireld because of the goals he's scored - and that one at Arsenal was something special.
The Cat Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Steven Davis is underrated for me. He's fitted with a Diesel engine that is strong, reliable and consistent. He never gives up. Just fixed that post.
grezz Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Wanyama for me, but the whole back 4 are right behind him.
cobbysouth Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Clyne for me. However wanyama has been catching Ip lately.
hasper57saint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Just fixed that post. Well bloody unfix it.I abhor poetic licence
Turkish Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Steven Davis for me. He's fitted with a Diesel engine that is strong, reliable and consistent. He never gives up. A Volvo v40 diesel of a player?
View From The Top Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Eìther fullback or Toby but SD has also been outstanding.
Minsk Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 For me, it is between Clyne, Bertrand, Toby, Steve Davis and big Vic. At the moment I am leaning towards Toby purely because of his versatility. He has been outstanding no matter where he has been asked to play. Our most versatile layer since Nick Holmes.

It's just a fact that he is consistently overlooked in favour of younger or flashier players, not just by the media but most of our fans too.
Batman Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 No law. It's just a fact that he is consistently overlooked in favour of younger or flashier players, not just by the media but most of our fans too. How can he over looked when we are always raving about him
Barry the Badger Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 I'd go for Fonte. Not only a great player but consistently makes those around him look good.
John Boy Saint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 A Volvo v40 diesel of a player? Probably more of a Citroën, like Marmite you either like em or hate em, the same way so many blinkered winkles drop him from their suggested line ups in pre match threads.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 1. Toby 2. Clyne 3. Vic 4. Fonte 5. Bertrand
Jack Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 So tough. I'll go for Toby, with Big Vic a close 2nd. Honourable mentions for Clyne, Bertrand, Davis.
CWD Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Clyne the standout for me so far, with Toby, Fonte, Wanyama and Davis not far behind
niceandfriendly Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Toby, Fonte, Wanyama, Clyne, Bertrand, Davis all level in my opinion, so each receive a cupcake.
Hodgey Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 I'm going for Pelle - we haven't missed SRL and without him we would have been lost (look at Shef Utd performance). Not just his goals but all round link play and work rate, also think he has been a bit unlucky with near misses / hitting post etc. if he doesn't play I just don't see us winning as he is integral to the way we play. Lots of contenders though - he nudges it ahead of the full backs, Toby and Jose, Davis and Wanyama.
Viking Saint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 So many in contention. Good sign! 1. Alderweireld 2. Wanyama 3. Clyne 4. Bertrand agree with all these but think you could add Davis to this list....Mane and Tadic have had patches of brilliance but need greater consistency......nice position to be in!
Pierre Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Fonte looks to have what Franny had before him. His determination lifts the whole team. Best player? Toby, clyne, Bertrant, Morgan, Victor, Davis, Tadic have all been on top of their game. Pelle seems to be the player we miss the most when he's out though. If there's an award I suppose it has to go to Koeman!
Weston Saint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 Forster – Has made some mistakes but his kicking is excellent. Good first half 7/10 Clyne – Has improved further this season and is now the best English right back (wing back) and deservedly now an England international 8/10 Fonte – Another who has improved with the added responsibility of team Captain. Another who has been rewarded with an International cap 8/10 Alderweireld – Undoubted class player with great poise, cool head and great reader of the game. 9/10 Yoshida – Prone to the odd mistake when on the ball but good defender and can bring the ball out and can pass well. 7/10 Gardos – Disappointed with him. Well able to defend high balls but lacks the confidence/ability to bring the ball out or find the right pass. Now number 4 choice but not a disaster if he is called into action. 5/10 Bertrand – Has developed into a very good left back (wing back). One of a myriad of successes this season. We have certainly not missed Shaw! 8/10 Schneiderlin – Undoubted talent and first on the team sheet. His form and work rate has not diminished and good to see him now recognised internationally by his Country. 7/10 Wanyama – Has stepped up to the mark and has immense strength and presence in front of the defence. 8/10 Cork – Injuries have kept him out for a while so I am rating him on his performances in the side. Tidy creative and now scoring goals. 7/10 Tadic – Great start to his Saints career but tailed off in recent games although he looked back to some form again Arsenal. That drop in form means 7/10 Davis – Busy midfielder always available for a pass and can create. Lacking goals which again means 7/10 James Ward Prowse – Similar to Davis at present and needs to be more creative. Good dead ball deliveries. Still young and an undoubted talent 7/10 Long – I like him as he produces something different. Like a wasp round the opposition defence and an integral part of the squad 6/10 Mane – Started well, fell away but now playing in his best position, quick and scoring goals. 7/10 Pelle – First couple of games he lacked everything but having acclimatised himself to premier football he has proved to be excellent and another rewarded with international honours. 8/10 I have not rated players who have yet to make a regular impact but I am impressed with Reed and can see him being our next star player. Targett has not disappointed but a little inexperienced at present. So for me player of the half season is Alderweireld

UpweySaint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 I think Pelle is worth a shout. He came in under enormous pressure and has been a massive part of how we play!
James Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 I think Pelle is worth a shout. He came in under enormous pressure and has been a massive part of how we play! Agree with this. Yes, his goals have dried up a tad but he came in and hit the ground running and scored some pretty important goals. I genuinely believe he is the one outfield player that we couldn't cope without.
SFC Chris Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Toby has played well and Clyne most improved but Mane has been the standout player without a doubt. Outstanding talent. Le Tiss with pace some may say I think I may have posted this after a few sherries... Pelle must be considered player of the half season for the simple reason that we look completely lost when he doesn't play. Toby looks an outstanding talent but Pelle more important to our overall play
berkshiresaint Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Steven Davis. He is so so underrated, but massively important to the team. His work rate is unbelievable; he's the guy that links play with the forwards but he never neglects defensive duties either. His first touch for the second goal against Arsenal was ridiculous. 100% this
eelpie Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 I'm going to give it to Fonte. He's matured as captain, his form has leapt and his leadership has made Saints the best defence in the Premiership.
Leicestersaint Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Wanyama - with Alderveireld and Clyne close seconds.
saintchris23 Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Wanyama for me, but the whole back 4 are right behind him. So you rate his positioning as a defensive midfielder then?
