Great move by the club

he seems perfectly happy with his role at the club

always going to play a part in the season and can cover for the odd game at full back

good for him too, to be part of a good squad and he will always be fresh for Japan, which I guess is very important to him

good signing by the club which allow games with 3 at the back, which he seems to be suited at

What superb news. Maya is a fantastic player and I am so happy for him and all Southampton fans who can enjoy his satisfying performances for more years.

Terrific news, Maya has been outstanding recently. Well done to the board for getting this done before he heads off with Japan.

It's another kick in the nuts for MLG :( All his predictions are going wrong! He says prayers are wasted on Clark Carlisle, but baby Jesus spares his life. He predicts that Tim's beloved will be driven Sylvia Plath by unwanted advances, but she receives them with gratitude. And now Yoshida, who is not good enough to play for Saints, receives 3 year contract! Bro just can't win!

He's improved dramatically over the last year or so, he's an excellent little player. No longer do I have that small panic attack when I see his name on the teamsheet; he's proved to be capable and reliable in this league.

Nice one - excellent cover and happy to be a squad player.

I'm glad the club listened to me when i posted that he was a great 4th choice centre back and squad option.

Not sure you are right. If we play a 5-3-2/3-5-2 bit with 3 centre backs, he isn't cover/back up.

Good news. Another right decision from Les Reed who is on course be considered as the greatest Director of Football* the world has ever known. If the man isn't honoured by the Queen in the next few years it will be utterly unjust.

There is no evidence the club agreed he could move in January and lots of evidence that he will not. Next summer is a different matter, of course.

despite the number 3 on his shirt, he nearly always ends up as substitute right back, and not so often at the back...or on the left.

(I'm talking about Yoshida BTW -as some people seem to have drifted away from the OP.)

- has rarely had a run of games in the past so as to be called ..consistant, but has quite looked capable in the last few outings.

He knows the club.. and the formation and his team mates - certainly a better bet than importing ...yet another CB. Good decision.

Good news. We need to have capable players who are happy enough to be a squad player, and he's exactly that.

Like you mean a squad player that plays every game... LOL.

I like the lad, he has adapted well to what to a very disciplined Japanese must be an unsettling informal joshy culture and has worked his socks off to improve his all-round game to the level needed at the top of the PL. Absolutely delighted that Maya will be here for a few more years, a natural leader who brings much needed dedication to the dressing room. Players who want to be here are the players we should want to keep.

Six foot 2 - not that little. Great reward for a good squad player.

Ive been critical of him, but he's been reliable when called upon these last few games, even playing at rb wheres he been hopeless before. Good backup player, we have some really good defensive options, but will probably need a couple more for Europe next season.

A few months ago I was of the opinion that it felt right to create a space for Stephens or Turnbull and let Maya go but his performances of recent have been very good and I can't say this is a bad deal for us - as long as he is happy to understand where he is in the pecking order. I suspect (and hope!) that *if* we have European football next season he will be of even more importance to us with the increase in games. One criticism of him (and it is not unique to him to be fair) is that it takes him a while to get up to speed when he hasn't had many games - and as a backup that poses a bit of a problem. But we'll just have to live with that as it is understandable.
