JackanorySFC Posted 2 January, 2015 Posted 2 January, 2015 Not been to OT for a few years, and when I have previously it's always been by train. This time I'm staying up Fri - Sun and driving back after the game, however I'm going up with the in-laws and my missus. The girls are shopping and us boys are going on the lash then to the game (none of us would have it any other way), my missus is driving us all back to So'ton and given the KO time and a 4.5hr drive home with work in the morning I was wondering if anyone with a decent knowledge of Manchester could recommend a good rendezvous location for us to get away from the game on public transport, meet the car and get on the M6 south as quickly as possible. Cheers!
thefuriousb Posted 2 January, 2015 Posted 2 January, 2015 If the women are off shopping then simply meet them at the Trafford Centre (assuming that is where they are shopping). Its then dead simple to get on the M60.
Sour Mash Posted 2 January, 2015 Posted 2 January, 2015 Anyone with good local knowledge might be able to better advise than me, but Altrincham might be a decent shout? Tram down there after the game and quick onto the motorway. Option worth looking at anyway.
ericofarabia Posted 2 January, 2015 Posted 2 January, 2015 Don't expect a quick get away by Metro. My last visit 2 years ago, mid week it took over an hour in the queue to reach the platform!! On the subject of shopping, anybody who buys a 50/50 scarf outside the ground deserves a slapping.
John Boy Saint Posted 2 January, 2015 Posted 2 January, 2015 The shops will be shutting as the game kicks off unless the Trafford Centre is a 11-5 kind of centre on a Sunday. Worth identifying somewhere along that road to the Traffird Centre and M60 as my Manc mate has pointed out they hold the traffic round OT for almost an hour after kick off so being somewhere down Wharf way or whatever it's called has less traffic as there is nothing from the other side of OT joining it for a while (hope that makes sense)

I've got some 50/50 Selfie sticks ready to hit the stall just in time for man United, competitvely priced at £49.99 for an extra £15 there is also the chance to have a selfie taken, with selfie taken, using said Selfie stick with mongboard legend Turkish. I'll be taking preorders from monday for this unique experience.

I am working in London so missing the trip to OT but it would be dead cool to have one of those in the bar for the second half.
Mikey88 Posted 2 January, 2015 Posted 2 January, 2015 Altrincham or Sale are probably your best options. Park up there, then jump on the metro into Manchester!

I'm happy to come to London and meet you but will require travelling expenses covered.

It's probably around a couple of miles from OT (we walked it) but this was probably over 10 years ago and the weather was fine! We also stayed at the hotel there (think it was a Premier Inn?) with pub attached so the other halves can always wait for you in there, although I think the Trafford Centre stays open for bars and restuarants. Getting onto the M60 is simple.
JackanorySFC Posted 2 January, 2015 Author Posted 2 January, 2015 Thanks for the advice everyone, seems Trafford Centre could be the best bet, I would rather be trekking on foot and moving than queueing for the Metro, at least at the Trafford Centre they should be able to find somewhere to eat/ drink whilst waiting for us as well. Really looking forward to this, still hold a grudge going back to my first game there, Banger put us 1 nil up but a young lad called Giggs scored 2 late (and suspiciously offside) goals to take all 3 points from us!
hasper57saint Posted 2 January, 2015 Posted 2 January, 2015 Hey Turks. Does my red on white one side and white on red the other depicting the word Southampton count as a 50/50 or is it a collectors item?

JackanorySFC Posted 2 January, 2015 Author Posted 2 January, 2015 You going Turks? If so it's been a while since I last saw you, we could meet up at the half scarf stand and take a selfie to commemorate the occasion? As it's been so long I'll wear a giant foam hand and paint my face under a red and white jester wig (more subtle than a red carnation in a lapel) to make sure you remember me. Ha, as typing this I've just remembered when leaving the ground yesterday walking up Britannia Road by the away coaches there was an Arsenal fan, in his 50's wearing a full kit (with astro turf boots) with a half/ half kit on! I **** you not, long thinning blonde hair and 2 JVC Arsenal kits, red and yellow split down the middle, even one of each colour sock! I was going to take a photo and tweet both full kit ****** and half scarf ***** with an absolute cracker but I was actually slightly worried about the mush's mental state. Anyone else see this? I was actually sober for a change otherwise I wouldn't have believed myself!

The Trafford Centre is massive, and obviously good for the shoppers, but there is often also a massive traffic jam round it. Might be worth you looking at the Lowry Centre as an alternative , very near the ground ..... a much smaller shopping centre but with optional museums and art gallery nearby.

CB Saint Posted 3 January, 2015 Posted 3 January, 2015 What is the easiest (read quickest) way to get from OT to Manchester Piccadilly Station - it looks like an hour walking on the maps, is there any quicker way especially after the game - and are we likely to be held in?

Tram (metro link) from Old Trafford/Warwick Road ,but it will be absolutely packed with home fans, so may not be a good idea when we win!
Sydenhampton Posted 4 January, 2015 Posted 4 January, 2015 Problem you'll have is that once you do get to drive away the M6 southbound will be chocka block. Both sets of fans will be using it to get home.
