Saints offer Toby Alderweireld a four-year deal after he tells them he wants to stay

I totally agree with you. Mark Wright is the only one who comes close for me.

The problem is every club in the Prem is now looking at him with interest. Getting him to sign on the dotted line is probabaly the most important signing we will make. He is an 7\10 player ever week and often higher!

There's no doubt he is excellent, and he oozes composure and quality. However, the way our team is so well set up, and the protection the midfield give the back four, most centre backs would look good. Just look at Lovren this year. But he hasn't put a foot wrong all season, and his midfield performance against Arsenal away in the league was one of the best performances of the season. He would be a fantastic permanent signing.

He's absolutely brilliant - he is the one player we should break the bank for. If we can offload Ramirez and Osvaldo (I presume we're still paying a contribution to their wages?), then he is the one player I'd love us to go all out for.

I'd love to keep Bertrand too, but for Toby should be number 1 target. New contracts for Yoshida, Cork, Jay etc., plus another forward player or two and we have a squad. Would like another goalie, but hey, I'm not greedy ...

Being amongst the younger generation, Killer is the only player I've seen come close. Lovren looked like he could be that player this time last year but the second half of the season and his form for Lyon and Liverpool suggests otherwise. Would be over the moon if we can secure him permanently.

More than halfway through the season and we have the best defence in the League. There aren't too many Saints players in history with that on their CV.

Interested to know what the consensus is regarding the 'value' of Toby and Bertrand?

Original suggestions were £6m and £10m

Reckon these figures may have to be reviewed and will possibly impact on the budget available for other players

Would be great to keep both players if finances allow

We have a buy clause for Ryan at 8mill and Toby's clause is 6mill but his parent club can pull out by paying us a 1.5mill penalty IIRC.

been watching for over 54 years and starting to think that Toby is best defender we have ever had

Can't think of a better central defender, a real bonus for us this season.

The team need 4th spot this season to keep him and Morgan.

Koeman basically said that it is up to Toby if he stays.

The club have made it clear we want to sign him.

Guessing Toby is keeping his options open

Can't blame him if he waits to see where we end up, he's easily good enough for a Champions League side.

Has been excellent - makes defending look effortless at times.

Is much better in the middle, though - today, thought he lost track of what was behind him: Carzola in the first half for his chance and then Sanchez in the second which drew a great save from Forster.

Aldeweireld, in defence (whole world in his hands).

Why do so many people not join in with different chants? Tried my hardest to get "mane mane, mane mane, mane mane, mane mane, sadio-oh-oh" going to the old Billy Sharp tune only to be drowned out by f*cking seven nation army.

Hope and pray this happens, the bloke is top, top class. Whilst he could well attract a "bigger" club, he seems to be very much enjoying his football with us, enjoys working with Koeman and possibly wants to be settled for a couple of years of regular football, rather than having a repeat of Atletico Madrid. Would be fantastic news if this gets confirmed.

I think the club have every intention to make this happen, hopefully Toby can see this as a good place for him right now.

He's utter class. Reads the game so well, positions himself so well, strong in the tackle, throws his body on the line. He's the ultimate defender. For £6m it makes the Lovren to Liverpool deal look utterly hilarious. (if it wasn't already funny enough!)

This guy is an excellent player

Do you want much football pal? Paulo Maldini was an excellent player. Tony might have excellent games and he's very good but he's not an excellent player. Maldini was, where does he compare against Paulo Maldini?
