Saints vs Ipswich - Build Up

Lighthouse

Recommended Posts

Anyone old enough to remember the 1960's Cup Tie v Ipswich which we won 7-1 (after being 6-0 up at half time)

As I recollect Ipswich were a higher placed side than us at the time so this was a decent win.

Unusually for me I was stood on the players entrance side of the Milton Rd terrace and there was a bloke behind me continually denigrating Ray Crawford (the Ipswich No 9)

I guess they both did National Service together as the Saints fan kept on about 'Jungle Boy' so assumed Crawford had been posted to the Far East

Ipswich had a left winger at the time (Jimmy Leadbitter) who looked liked Albert Steptoe (spindly legs and dodgy teeth) but a useful player for his time

A relief from being 4th? You are nuts! I did not think our last cup game was a 'relief'. I am loving this season!

A 'relief' in the sense that it does not matter that much whether we win or not in the Cup. Much more tense over a league game, when points are a t stake. I will feel more relaxed once we pass the 40 point mark.

I've never heard of Ipswich, but that doesn't mean we should be put straight through to the next round. It's a nice opportunity for the yokels to come down to the big City, and I genuinely hope they enjoy their day out. It's these kind of ridiculous mismatches that make the FA Cup the great competition it is

You keep that solitary joke going throughout 2015, won't you.

So funny. So very, very funny.

I can hand on heart honestly say 100% that I am not worried about getting to 40 points!! My only worry now that we have come so far it that we do not finish in the top 6!

I would love an fa cup final as well. Am I asking to much?

We need to keep our eye on the league until we get 40 points then we can aim to finish higher up in the league, but not to high. I don't think we could cope with playing European games

But it is the next level and as fans we want to see Southampton play at the highest level possible, to represent the place I was born and the club we all love. I love the football club and would love to see them in Europe. My biggest dream would be to see us in the champions league. You are right we would find it hard to cope, but would love to see us give it a go! Also this would give a fantastic opportunity to take us to a whole different level.

Relegation is not something that crosses my mind for this season, for sure. We are in a completley different league, within the premier league!

Do you honestly believe we are in any danger of not getting to 40 points? i.e of losing every single remaining game - all 18 of them. We are basically guaranteed a top 10-12 position even if we have a **** second half to the season.

As intellectually superior as you are to every person who has ever lived you clearly don't get this 'joke'.

It did use to be very moderately funny.

Those days have long since gone.

Credit to you though, you do still get the very occasional bite.

Of course I think it is extremely likely that we will get 40 points. However, I think we should concentrate on the league and aim to finish as high as we can without qualifying for Europe.

As for the long term ambitions, surely it is enough to remain in the top league, just as we did in the 80's and 90's.

Any venture into Europe could see us fighting relegation in the league.

Definite banner skin this one, as Ipswich are a decent well-organised side who will want to prove they can mix it with the big boys in the Prem. We will be without the skill and pace of Mane, however this has to be a great opportunity for Shane Long to have a full game and score I would have thought. Would like to see the likes of Seager finally given some game time too. Saints to win 3-1.

S*d it! Just learned that my game tomorrow has been called off - presumably with a waterlogged pitch. Bloomin' inevitable, but didn't want to risk a tenner by buying a ticket I couldn't use.

If anyone has a single spare ticket I'd be pleased to save _you_ that tenner! Thanks.

This team but not JWP, Clyne has played at left back many times in his career so would it not be possible for Bertrand to play at right back ?

"When I was a young kid watching the FA Cup finals in Holland, it was always a special day and maybe if I have one of the dreams, then maybe it is a dream to be playing in an FA Cup final," said Koeman.

"I spoke once to Ruud Gullit (about it), and he had one FA Cup final as the manager with Chelsea, and it was very special (for him).

"But it is a long way to Wembley, we will have to beat a lot of teams, so it all starts on Sunday."

"Every game we take seriously, we did that in the League Cup, and we will do it in the FA Cup."

"We have to analyse the games of Ipswich to prepare the players," he said.

"It will be tough against Ipswich, they are a good team, a strong opponent and one of the leaders in the Championship.

"Every game we take seriously, we did that in the League Cup, and we will do it in the FA Cup. I hate losing, the team is good, the freshness of the players is very positive."

"We gave the youngsters already some minutes in the Premier League, it is not different. I gave (defender) Matthew Targett the confidence and the time to play in the League Cup, but I believe in young players.

"I don't like to change the side a lot because I believe in the spirit of the team and what we are doing now."

“We would like to do well in the FA Cup, we tried to do that in the Capital One Cup as well. It’s not one game more important than the other, we go game by game and we would like to continue in the FA Cup – that’s our target.

“Every opponent we take very seriously. I watched the last game of Ipswich against Charlton Athletic and I have to prepare for the players for this Sunday, there is no difference to this game than to Arsenal or Chelsea.”

“If you have to choose between the FA Cup and the League Cup, maybe you go FA Cup,” he added. “But we took the League Cup very seriously, of course I would prefer to play in the FA Cup final but we have to fight for that.

“It will be tough against Ipswich, they are a good team, a strong opponent and one of the leaders in the Championship. We have to prepare for that.

“I don’t change a lot but of course we have to look to the players and the freshness of the players. Maybe we will make one or two changes, but we are in a good way.

“We have confidence and that’s the best way to be successful. I don’t like to change too much.”

On the injury front, Koeman confirmed right-back Nathaniel Clyne would miss out again, while he will wait until later on Friday for news on Sadio Mané.

Koeman added: “Clyney will not be ready for this weekend, normally he will be fit for next weekend and that’s good news.

“Sadio had a visit to make a scan in the hospital, later we will know exactly what happened and maybe to say how long he will be out for.”

Based on that, hoping for a strong team :)

Looking forward to this game and expect both teams to put out their strongest line ups.

There are a few Saints connections with Ipswich players which should be interesting. Mings is someone we let go from our academy so will want to prove himself. Bart in goal and then there is Mcgoldrick. I would of called him Mcgoaldrought but he seems to be doing alright at Ipswich these days. Basically a goal every other game for them.

I am mostly looking forward to watching their nipper Teddy Bishop. Seems to be a lot of interest in him from the big clubs so shall be interesting to see how he does.

Like I say it will be interesting to see who is picked. Especially as both managers yesterday talked up the importance of the cup and wanting to go on a run in it.

I was there - O'Brien and Paine were on fire and there was even a screamer from Harry Penk. We simply blew them away in the first half. Ipswich won the league (Alf Ramsey was their manager) and then took the Top Division by storm the following season .
