Saints vs Ipswich - Build Up

Momentum vs. rest?

After 4 games in 10 games, who would you play? What will Ipswich do? We were in exactly the same position last year with Burnley and managed a narrow win.

No Mane for 2 reasons. I would go with....

Forster

McCarthy - Fonte - Gardos - Targett

Morgan - Reed

Tadic - Davis - JWP

Long

I'd rest Pelle, Victor, Bertrand and Clyne who have all had a busy Christmas. Should be strong enough, if we do lose I wont be too upset this season.

Morgan is the top scorer in that team!

Pelle needs to play , if we want to score, and a goal would do him the world of good. Right back is a problem, as we have no wing-back in the squad other than Clyne. If Yoshida is available, I would play him there. It doesn't matter if he is tired as he will be away with Japan for a month after that.

Clyne missed last two games.

Bertrand missed Chelsea game.

Clyne has had a knock and will probably be out anyway, if he isn't I wouldn't be rushing him back for this game.

Bretrand yes but 3 in 10 days is still busy and I want to see more of Targett.

I'd play Targett too anyway, just saying Bertrand didn't have that busy a Christmas compared to others.

I thought Yoshida was away after today's match.

I'd play Pelle could be his chance to get back on the goal trail again but Ipswich are doing well iirc so it will be no easy match (wouldn't play two kids at fullback) so I'd go the same as Lighthouse but Pelle for Davis and Bertrand for Targett and possibly bring Matty on second half depending on circumstances

Pelle should play. We were awful up front without him against Sheff Utd.

I'd imagine Targett will play after Koeman's comments about him. Reed and Schneiderlin in midfield is a good move. I'd play Ward Prowse with them to give Davis a rest and Tadic, Pelle and Long as the front 3.

No, he is here for the Ipswich game, RK said he sgreed it with Japan coach. But you aren't the only one who thinks this fella on Solent said the same.

I thought Koeman said they agreed to let him stay for the Arsenal game?

Anyway, I really think Davis needs a rest. Pelle too but we should keep him in to try and get back into the scoring habit.

This half season, we played the maximum number of League Cup games, with strong sides in all rounds and it impacted our league campaign so negatively that we are merely two points clear in fourth. So that's one myth killed stone dead.

Now, for a cup competition played primarily at the weekend we are excellently place to freaking well go for it. And we should.

Full house, tough but beatable opposition to start us on our journey of making a bit of history in 2015.

So a similar team to today, with Morgan back (cup tie him, just to make sure...). I'd start with Long - feels like his kind of game.

No, he is here for the Ipswich game.

When did he say that? Today? Because on 23rd December...

Ipswich playing Derby could well be a saving grace, McCarthy probably has low expectations and doesn't want the distraction from the promotion chase, and is likely to rest players. He's got previous for it at Wolves too.

I can see us picking a side not unlike the one listed above too, though it might be an idea to see if we can find a central AM who isn't Davis (or Mané).

I assume Hesketh is injured, which is a shame as I would've liked to see him start this one.

Anyway, I would pick

Kelvin D

McCarthy

Fonte

Gardos

Targett

Morgan

Reed

JWP

Tadic

Long

Seager

Subs: FF, Bertrand, Toby, Davis, Pelle, Isgrove, McQueen

The fact we're holding 4th place and have a real shot at Champions League changes the calculation here a little. I'd argue that even if that's still a long shot, it's way less of a long shot than getting to Wembley in the FA Cup. So I think we have an obligation to prioritise for the league at this point. Therefore I'd support OP's 11. Maybe even bring in Isgrove for Tadic. Still enough there to win. Probably. And if we get unlucky and go out, not the end of the world.

The team picks itself. When you're on a good run the last thing we need is to take chances. We will pick our best team available and get the job done.

I do think there is room for Targett and McCarthy. Reed and JWP must start.

I'd go with

Foster

McCarthy, Fonte, Alderweireld, Targett

JWP, Reed, Schneiderlin, Tadic

Mane

Pelle

Underestimate Ipswich at your peril!

If McCarthy had low expectations he wouldn't have driven down to watch the game yesterday.

I think he smells the chance of a scalp

Mane's gone to the African cup of Nations and thus unavailable.

Apparently not. Despite what Ronald actually said in one of the pressers, it seems like it is actually Yoshida who has gone and Mane is still here for Ipswich. Koeman was quite specific once, he had spoken with the Japan coach and agreed to delay Yoshida going. Prrhaps one of us was confused :-)

We'll see, the C+ commentators said that Diouf of Stoke headed off for Senegal after yesterday's game and that they all had to report to Dakar by the week-end because the Senegal coach wants to see them all a bit before reducing his group from it's current 28 to the final 23. Doubt if Mané would be involved against Ipswich anyway, he went off injured yesterday and we have the new fella.

I really doubt that he'll play against Ipswich, seems that the UK haven't brought the old TW forward a day like most other European Countries have, so no new fella right ?

England are aligned with Germany in terms of TW, so 2 reasons he can't be transferred until tomorrow.

Ipswich are no mugs. They have lost only once since August. To expect to put in fringe players and youngsters and easily beat them is dangerous. They are a very tough team. If we don't put out a strong team we will struggle to break them down.

That's why I would put out our strongest team and then sub players if we are ahead and in control. Even with our strongest team out this will be a difficult game.

Ipswich will make changes, Mick McCarthy's already said that Bartosz Bialkowski won't play as he wants Dean Gerken to be match sharp in case BB was to get injured. According to McCarthy, they have a first-team squad of 20 senior players, and that many of them who haven't played recently will get a game this weekend. Suggests the likes of McGoldrick and Murphy, their main two strikers, might not feature either. Connor Sammon is fit again, so he'll probably play instead.

That does sound like they're going to rest a fair few players and based on Koeman's press conference we're putting a strong side out.

If Koeman's putting out the strongest team he has, the only changes will be Yoshida (Toby at RB and Fonte & Gardos in centre) and Mane (for Long) out, as I think they're both unavailable. Targett and Reed both deserve their chances, though.

he said that he will make a couple of changes. not many

Ipswich have a fine pedigree and the sort of team that would grace the Premier League.

I suspect that they will be happy to put up a good game playing good football but will not spill too many tears if the lose tomorrow.

Anyway, an intriguing fixture and a relief from the League.

A relief from being 4th? You are nuts! I did not think our last cup game was a 'relief'. I am loving this season!
